If you think of science as a puzzle, you''ll see that data is a key to unlocking it. Exemplary Evidence: Scientists and Their Data touches on the world''s many riddles—from how we see to what''s at the bottom of the ocean. It shares how scientists have solved such puzzles by collecting measurements, taking notes, and even making sketches. The book also provides mini-bios of the nine featured scientists plus four steps to using data to tease out your own answers about how the world works. Exemplary Evidence''s author is Jessica Fries-Gaither, a science educator who also wrote the award-winning NSTA Kids book Notable Notebooks: Scientists and Their Writings. Once again, she mixes sprightly storytelling with energetic rhyme, and Linda Olliver''s light-hearted drawings bring the ideas to life. It all helps explain how a sometimes-unappreciated part of science is as important now as it has been to scientists for centuries. As the author writes: Data supports conclusions; it can change people''s minds; It is used to build theories that help humankind. Scientists all along have known this to be true: Data is powerful! Now, what will yours do?

Instructional Sequence Matters shows how to make simple shifts in the way you arrange and combine activities to improve student learning. It also makes it easy for you to put the NGSS into practice. After explaining why sequencing is so important, author Patrick Brown provides a complete self-guided tour to becoming an “explore-before-explain” teacher. He explains that this teaching mindset helps students construct accurate knowledge firsthand, which is an important component of all science learning. The book focuses on two popular approaches for structuring science lessons: POE (Predict, Observe, and Explain) and 5E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate). You get guidance on how to create your own 5Es that translate the NGSS. And you get ready-to-use lessons featuring either a POE or 5E sequence to teach about heat and temperature, magnetism, electric circuits, and force and motion. Throughout, reflection questions spark thinking and help you develop the knowledge to adapt these concepts to your own classroom. Instructional Sequence Matters is a one-stop teaching resource for developing lessons that support both the NGSS and contemporary research on how students learn science best.

“ Individuals who are proficient in science should be able to understand the language of science and participate in scientific practices, such as inquiry and argumentation. Empirical research, however, indicates that many students do not develop this knowledge or these abilities in school. One way to address this problem is to give students more opportunities to engage in scientific argumentation as part of the teaching and learning of science. This book will help teachers with this task.” — Authors Victor Sampson and Sharon SchleighDevelop your high school students'' understanding of argumentation and evidence-based reasoning with this comprehensive book. Like three guides in one, Scientific Argumentation in Biology combines theory, practice, and biology content. It starts by giving you solid background in why students need to be able to go beyond expressing mere opinions when making research-related biology claims. Then it provides 30 thoroughly field-tested activities your students can use when learning to: • propose, support, and evaluate claims; • validate or refute them on the basis of scientific reasoning; and • craft complex written arguments. Detailed teacher notes suggest specific ways in which you can use the activities to enrich and supplement (not replace) what you'' re doing in biology class already. Scientific Argumentation is an invaluable resource for learning more about argumentation and designing related lessons. You''ll find it ideal for helping your students learn standards-based content; improve their biological practices; explain, interpret, and evaluate evidence; and acquire the habits of mind to become more proficient in science.
