Teachings on freedom and human wholeness“This seventh volume of the Centennial Edition of the Sufi Message series takes as its leading idea that of freedom. All beings pursue freedom since freedom is an essential quality of the soul. Too often, however, one person’s ostensible freedom is achieved at the expense of that of someone else. A truer freedom arises from the realization of interconnectedness. In the end, In an Eastern Rose Garden is a book about human wholeness. Peace and creativity, freedom and friendship, aristocracy and democracy, the inner and the outer—in the reconciliation of each of these pairs of seeming contraries lies the realization of the purpose for which we were created.”—From the introduction by Pir Zia Inayat Khan

Discourses on the transformative power of music, now brought to life for a new generation.Music has long been an important part of Sufi culture and practice, and Hazrat Inayat Khan’s musical qualifications are well known. He became a professor of music at an early age and subsequently won laurels throughout India for his performances. The lectures in this volume, “The Mysticism of Sound,” “Music,” “The Power of the Word,” and “Cosmic Language,” represent the harvest of Inayat Khan’s lifelong cultivation of the transformative power of music and sound. For decades, these fascinating discourses have provided inspiration to Sufi practitioners and dedicated musicians alike, and this new edition aims to bring Inayat Khan’s philosophy of music to a new generation.

The scientific point of view has gained dominance in our growing world culture by basing its authenticity on an empirical foundation. Yet mystics can point to a different test of authenticity: the broad agreement in subtle perceptions of reality across many cultures and stretches of history. We benefit from the knowledge of the universe and the fascinating intricacies of nature, and we benefit from knowledge of meaning and purpose in the greater life of the cosmos and its implications for meaning in our own lives. An understanding and appreciation of the inner life of the universe can offer an integration of the scientific story of the outer life with the insight of mystics into the inner story, distinguishing the realms appropriate for science and spirituality to explore, and offering hope that they can coexist in mutual respect and harmony, and that each could enrich the other.

This volume comprises six books from the London period that include A Sufi Message of Spiritual Liberty, Hazrat Inayat Khan’s first book, and the only didactic work he would ever personally write. The subsequent books are lecture compilations of the London period assembled by two prominent early disciples, Sherifa Goodenough and Zohra Williams: Aqibat: Life after Death; The Phenomenon of the Soul; Love, Human and Divine; Pearls from the Ocean Unseen; Metaphysics. This volume contains early works by Hazrat Inayat Khan and feature his distinctive mystical vision of life, a numinous music that quickens attuned minds with the gentle vigor of its ethereal harmonies.

Teachings on the question of happiness from Inayat Khan’s later years

“In this sixth volume of the Centennial Edition of the Sufi Message series, Hazrat Inayat Khan approaches the question of happiness from various angles. Sometimes the context is a discussion of desire, other times an analysis of ethics. What links these investigations is that, in every case, Hazrat identifies happiness with the soul. ‘Happiness is your own being, your own self, that self that is the most precious thing in life.’ From this perspective, happiness is something to be discovered rather than acquired.”
