The Number 1 best seller is updatedThis newly updated book features 2 new Chapters of content and insights infiltration of China, Russia and Iranian agents to undermine the very democracy we hold dear. Politicians and business elites including former Ambassadors to Canada, who may unwittingly have helped the criminal enterprises get a secure hold in the West.Soon after Wilful Blindness was published, I learned the book was having an impact in Beijing. I was contacted by Canadian intelligence and informed that Chinese espionage assets in Canada had been tasked with collecting information on me. Beijing wanted to know how the public was reacting to my book, and whether it could damage the Chinese Communist Party. It was shocking to hear this, but I wasn’t surprised that the United Front Work Department’s thin-skinned apparatchiks felt threatened by my granular reporting on their operations in Vancouver. I had named names and cited documents.I had even developed sources within local Chinese espionage networks. And I had drawn links between senior CCP official Bin Zhang, Markham underground casino suspect Wei Wei, and a Chinese front company that donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s family foundation. It can’t be overstated how significant this reporting was. I showed how this espionage operation extended to elite criminal suspects and their United Front comrades in Vancouver, including the flag-waving leaders of rallies against Hong Kong Canadians. This in turn was all connected to Triad suspects with deep ties to illegal casinos, violent loan-sharking networks,Chinese police forces and military, and the Vancouver Model of money laundering and economic infiltration. And I continued to dig. After my book came out, I learned that the keyfundraiser and Chinese community organizer for Justin Trudeau in Toronto was flagged in Fintrac suspicious transaction reports. The documents said this Markham man had, in just a few months, routed millions of dollars of wire transfers from Hong Kong for Chinese corruption suspects accused of big-time real estate money laundering in Canada. He was also tight with a top-tier CSIS..... Cooper has exposed the close ties between Chinese nationals who are dedicated to Beijing and have bought influence with all political parties in Canada. It's about time that former PM's cut their lucrative arrangements with the PRC and Cooper makes a compelling case as to how money through these networks has undermined our political process and policy engagement with the Peoples's Republic of China.Sam’s vigorous journalism on tracking and exposing money laundering has been crucial in the national push to reform and update Canada’s laws. This book pulls his work, and indeed the work of many professionals, into one explosive narrative. Canadian lore often pitches our country as a well-meaning good partner in the world. But as Sam’s report has shown, we are a node in global systems of corruption and crime, with the infiltration and implications only becoming worse over time. Many looked the other way while B.C.'s primary industry, real estate, ballooned with dirty cash. But the unintended social consequences are now clear: a fentanyl overdose crisis raging in major cities throughout North America and life spans falling for the first time in modern Canada, and a runaway housing market that has devastated middle-class income earners. This story isn't just about real estate and fentanyl overdoses, though. Sam Cooper has uncovered evidence that shows the primary actors in so-called "Vancouver Model" money laundering have effectively made Canada's west coast a headquarters for corporate and industrial espionage by the CCP. And these ruthless entrepreneurs have used Vancouver and Canada to export their criminal model to other countries around the world including Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Cooper finds that the RCMP's 2019 arrest of its top intelligence official, Cameron Ortis, raises many frightening questions. Could Chinese transnational criminals and state actors targeting Canada's industrial and technological crown jewels have gained protection from the Mounties?Could China and Iran have insight into Canada's deepest national security secrets and influence on investigations? According to the evidence Cooper has found, Ortis had oversight of many investigations into transnational money laundering networks and insight into sensitive probes of suspects seeking to undermine Canada's democracy and infiltrate the United States.Wilful Blindness is a powerful narrative that follows the investigators who refused to go along with institutionalized negligence and corruption that enabled the Vancouver Model, with Cooper drawing on extensive interviews with the whistle-blowers; thousands of pages of government and court documents obtained through legal applications; and large caches of confidential material available exclusively to Cooper. The book culminates with a shocking revelation showing how deeply Canada has been compromised and what needs to happen to get the nation back on track with its "Five Eyes" allies."I'm astonished that some Hollywood production company hasn't already signed him for a big-screen treatment of this story. It's a huge story." - Terry Glavin, National Post

Ever since the Chinese Communist Party came to power in 1949, it has harbored an ambition to lead the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to the summit of the international system. In the Party’s preferred historical analysis, it alone is able to overcome historical injustices and return China to a position of preeminent power in the world. The country’s current leader, Xi Jinping, appears to believe that the PRC is within touching distance of achieving this ambition, which the Party calls “the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.” Xi has set the target for realizing national rejuvenation as the middle of the twenty-first century, with certain milestones to be reached by 2027 and 2035.Xi’s beliefs are increasingly supported by hard evidence. Experts within the Party have for decades attempted to calculate the aggregate strength of the nation and compare it to that of other major powers. Measuring the country’s “comprehensive national power” in this way involves assessing progress on a variety of indices such as military strength, economic power, and global influence. Under Xi, material progress on these and other components of national power have become impossible to overlook. In Forging Order[AH1] , editors Peter Mattis and Arran Hope offer a new understanding of what the PRC has become and where the Party is headed. Collating writing by a wealth of expert analysts and China watchers, they show how Beijing has reasserted strict control over the Party, reinserted it into active roles within public and private institutions, and undertaken dramatic reforms to mobilize the state in a struggle for national rejuvenation. Military might, industrial and technological innovation, and an ever-evolving social world all play a part in the country’s bid for dominance on the world stage. The book traces how everything from One Belt One Road projects across, the multi-domain degradation of the status quo with Taiwan, and cutthroat competition over artificial intelligence and other crucial technologies of the future form a complex strategy both visible and invisible. It also unveils the networks through which the Party seeks to extend its influence beyond the PRC’s borders. Examining the Party’s overseas united front efforts to cultivate relationships, shape narratives, and buy acquiescence toward Beijing’s interests, it raises difficult questions about foreign influence and the resilience of open institutions. The PRC’s dramatic progress in just a few decades has presented a major challenge to democracies worldwide, particularly Canada, the United States and those in Europe. It is also undermining the institutions of the postwar international system. Beijing has been shaping an alternative (new) order more conducive to its interests. The West is only beginning to understand the scale of the Chinese Communist Party’s ambitions and how far it has already advanced towards realising them.Understanding how the Party conceives of its own power and position in the world is essential for recognizing the direction in which it is taking the PRC and, increasingly, impacting the rest of the world. Forging Order provides the tools to approach such an understanding. With incisive prose and analytic rigor, it describes the challenge posed to democratic nations by an increasingly powerful authoritarian state and demonstrates the urgent need for democracies to work together to protect the institutions on which open societies depend. [AH1]Didn’t we agree on “Forging the Future”?[AH2]ditto

"We were making great strides towards a more inclusive, modern, business savvy Ontario. Six months out from the election we already had 90 of 124 candidates in place and actively campaigning. We had just unveiled a home-run platform that put us on the front page of every newspaper. With 170 days to go before the election even the media was touting that I would be the next Premier of Ontario. Instead, on January 24th, 2018, I was all but assassinated in public. Who did it, how, and more importantly why? This is a story of betrayal, blackmail, and backroom politicking involving some of Canada's biggest political names. This was my dream, this was my nightmare.I'm Patrick Brown, and this is my story."Now in this updated version of the book we take readers from the day the book was published in November 2018 up to his announcement to run for the Leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada and to become the next Prime Minister of Canada. On March 6, 2022, CTV announced they had reached a settlement with Patrick Brown. An apology for their shoddy journalism that had not even been properly vetted before they aired their story leading to Patrick Browns resignation as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. CTV's anchor Lisa LaFlamme along with senior journalist Glen Macgregor were so anxious to have the biggest Me-To moment they forget how to conduct a proper interview with the key source that they relied on their false reporting on the women’s age. LaFlamme reported the woman was a high school student and underaged in a Bar where she supposedly met Brown. Optimum has listened to the interview between Laflamme and AE (the accuser) as she asks LaFlamme, "why am I here'? The veteran anchor goes on to try to lead the source down her desired. Path. Optimum reviewed audio tape recordings as part of our publishing house's due diligence process on Brown and his story as presented in the book which was launched with national media attention. All of this should lead to the questions addressed in the book. Who wanted Patrick Brown removed as leader of the PC Party of Ontario?.CTV now reports that the accuser of Patrick Brown recounts key piece: she was not underage in bar and not in high school but she "stands by her core story" and CTV stands by their original story. In a court of law this would shred a case. CTV credibility is on very, very thin ice. - John Wright, Author, Pollster, and Spokesperson Angus Reid Group and IpsosBoth of the two women's stories about @brownbarrie are falling apart simultaneously. Never seen anything like this in Canadian journalism. Even in the US, only comparable example I can think of is Dan Rather's "memogate" in 2004 (also before an election). - Jonathan Kay, former editor-in-chief of The WalrusBrown was certainly known as a lady's man but this story had no basis in fact as CTV tried to portray Brown to their audience as some sort of sexual predator of teenage women. He was later forced to resign in the middle of the night by his caucus and some of his closest handlers. It seems some of them had coveted his job and were anxious to have him removed that very night rather than allowing Brown to clear his name. From CTV News"Key details provided to CTV for the story were factually incorrect and required correction. CTV National News regrets including those details in the story and any harm this may have caused to Mr. Brown," reads the update agreed upon by both parties. The story had been updated to reflect the first woman’s revised recollection of her age at the time of the alleged events. In response to the 2018 report, Brown filed a defamation lawsuit against CTV News, seeking $8 million in damages. However, no money was exchanged as part of the settlement.Politics is described as a bloodsport ... this book [has] taken it to a new level. I would call it a Game of Thrones kind of assassination. - Cynthia Mulligan, CityNews, TorontoBrampton Mayor-elect Patrick Brown's new memoir breaks the mould of stodgy, predictable political biographies that employ pedestrian language to bore readers into submission. In the 1980's, Canada's blood collection and distribution system, once considered a model around the world, went off the rails. What occurred was a disastrous chain of events that still reverberates to this day for the thousands whose lives were changed forever by the system's failure.Vic Parsons examines the causes of what many have called the most significant public health issue in our country's history and outlines the failure of The Red Cross and the various levels of government implicated in what was a very preventable tragedy. The price of which cost taxpayers over $10 billion dollars, and many others their lives. This book also forms the backbone of an 8 part series being funded jointly by CBC Canada and Sundance TV that will air early 2019.This is not old wine in new bottles. The issue of blood collection and distribution continues to this day in Canada, the US, the UK and Australia. The public policy debates remain current as companies wishing to open pay-for-blood-services now operate in one province and are being blocked in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta. The UK is re-opening hearings this fall into the tainted blood collection issue as successive governments have failed to deal with the aftermath. It remains one of the most topical health issues today.

"Populism is not a political theory, system or ideology. It is a crude appeal to a certain part of the population gaining support by reinforcing their belief that their economic and social attainments are limited by a political system that disadvantages them..."What is the influence of conservative principles on the Canadian political landscape? What are current conservative positions on today's issues and events? Is Canada a conservative-friendly country or have we, as a nation, moved so far left that almost any conservative view or perspective gets trashed almost immediately? These questions, and others, Morris W Dorosh attempts to answer in his new book, You Ask Me: Reflections of a Canadian Conservative.Dorosh argues that political interaction today is unprecedentedly combative. Civility, respect for opposing points of view, common sense, and the capacity for compromise belong to a different age. To an age where one's qualifications for a political position were crucial to being elected. Political life today, he points out, disproportionally attracts candidates of mediocre ability because of the economic benefits offered by the positions. Thus, we end up with legislators with responsibilities and authority for which they have little experience, less preparation and no background. The book is a collection of opinion papers first penned by Dorosh in Agri-Week, a newsletter for executives, owners and investors now in its 52nd year of publication.

Serious, entertaining and relentless Kimble Ainslie explains how political engagement is critical to a larger, broader narrative and leads politicians in understanding how citizens want their views and values represented in all levels of government. In short, he looks at how we activate our political choices in everyday life. One might think it second nature that rationality drives political decision making. Unfortunately, rational thought is too often overlooked, disdained or simply ignored by academics, political operatives, and by the elected officials that may well form the incoming government.Readers who are interested in politics, human behaviour, psychology and citizenship are ideal targets for the book. With elections always at the ready, this is a must read for citizens and political junkies alike. This is a primer for citizens seeking clarity on the critical issues of our time and how to approach others in a rational and objective political discussion.ON PUBLIC OPINION: "The version of systemic rationality, I found extremely interesting. Your provocative ideas keep circulating though my mind. ... Public opinion is a sufficient basis both for useful polling and for democratic government ... for electing officials and for conducting referendums. - TOM FLANAGAN, Distinguished Fellow in the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary and former Research Director for the Reform Party of CanadaON POLLING: "[This essay] should become required reading for journalists. I can't say I agree entirely with all your points, but I can't fault the logic you present. ... Most of our clients want fast and cheap [and there are] hazards [with] short and/or automated sampling ... I also agree with the premise that people need to "settle in" to a survey and that rushed responses are less likely to be serious." - QUITO MAGGI is president of Mainstreet Research, a national polling firm headquartered in TorontoON CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: "The chapter spoke to me. My late wife, when a councillor in the 1980s fought against the bureaucratic model, wrestled control of environmental issues away from "the experts" and led the City of Waterloo. Their work was so productive the city won many accolades. Somebody should have written about these ideas. "I'm glad you have." - PETER WOOLSTENCROFT, professor emeritus, University of WaterlooON CAMPAIGNING: "By successfully relying on the advice and direction of Dr. Ainslie, my profile and effectiveness in office was heightened. Dr. Ainslie's advice was and is valuable because it is blunt; he never offers up fluff. Indeed, he acts as a fluff filter. Reading chapter four on campaigning refreshes my appreciation for his revolutionary, strategic, pioneering craftsmanship, and the evolution of those smart enough to implement his advice." - TED WERNHAM was a four-term city councillor in London, Ontario

A panorama of curiosity, delight and thoughtful analysis. An anthology that takes the reader on an insightful journey through the past in understanding the present.Robert Fulford is arguably Canada's most distinguished journalist, essayist, and liberal thinker of our time. He began his career in 1950 at the Globe and Mail and wrote columns for more than 20 years at The Toronto Star, as well as being the editor for Saturday Night Magazine. Since 1999 his columns appear twice a week in The National Post. He is the author of more than ten books, and he delivered the Massey Lectures in 1984. But some of his best writing, certainly some of the most vibrant, appeared in the Queen's Quarterly from 2004-2014, home to many of Canada's more eloquent and thought-provoking writers for over a century including such luminaries as W.O Mitchell, Sinclair Ross, Mavis Gallant, Carol Shields and Margaret Atwood.Fulford's brilliant anthology is offered here. It is a literary time machine that transports the reader on a passage through events and social commentary with some of the most influential figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. Entertaining, thoughtful, and insightful, Fulford will engage young and old with these short stories and essays - and the timing could not be better.Concerned citizens wrestle with the knowledge that current political discourse has slipped to a level of contempt and rhetoric that treats most as intellectually weak. Today our collective conscience is influenced by art, literature, movies and music while modern philosophy and its stream of consciousness have been discounted or forgotten by many of the leaders amongst us. Robert recognized that the foundations of great societies are built on Ethics and Ethos, Right and Wrong and the concept of the Rule of Law. Ideals espoused by both classical and contemporary philosophers. Fulford taps into his fascination with ancient and 20th-century philosophy and present reasoning as he explores a myriad of subjects in his book. Readers will be entertained as they soon find themselves embarking on a journey of introspection, perspective and fascination with how our world has evolved around us. Significant figures, events and a changing social contract are prominent within these beautiful essays.A Robert Fulford essay is like a crisp dry martini; crystalline, refreshing, elating. An elegant craftsman in full command of the language, his work glows with dazzling insights, a profound humanity and gregarious good humour. The man's a master. - Michael Enright, broadcaster, host of CBC Radio's The Sunday EditionOne thing I really admire about Robert Fulford's essays, apart from their calm erudition and the certainty of their judgement, is the boggling range of subjects he wraps his mind around, everything from television to the tango, from H.G. Wells's sexual affairs to parataxis in the King James Bible. - Ian Brown, columnist for the Globe and Mail, author of The Boy in the Moon and Man Overboard.

How Successive Governments Have Weakened the Foundation of All Canadian's Social and Economic SecurityAt some point you will find yourself lying in a hospital bed. There is a good chance that your bed will be a firm, rubber pad held secure between two rails and parked along a corridor in a busy emergency department. Moans of "Nurse!" will echo from the beds ahead of you in line. Those pleas will fall largely on deaf ears. Your hospital is underfunded and understaffed. Welcome to the current reality of Medicare in the 21st century.Using searing analogies and first-hand accounts, Dr. Whatley makes the argument that the current Medicare system is unsustainable and unless critical choices and changes are made soon, the publicly funded, single-payer system in Canada will implode.Successive governments, regardless of political stripe, know all too well that Canada's system of health care is one of the defining characteristics of "being a Canadian", and any changes deemed harmful will have them thrown out of power. Thus, decades of cuts around the margins, centralized control, federal/provincial infighting, and government oversight has left doctors and hospitals with little input on how your health dollars are allocated and spent. Citizens are being left to languish in pain for months, sometimes years, because the current cost and delivery system is programmed for the benefit of governments staying in power. That was not what was intended. Medicare should be about delivering high-quality and timely healthcare value for Canadians. This is not an easy fix. Treatment starts with a serious look at the disease, and Dr. Whatley pulls no punches. But what sounds like a radical new approach is neither new nor radical. He is not arguing for the end of Medicare per se but is making the case to let medical professionals - those providing the services - become equal partners in its design, implementation and delivery.Praise for When Politics Comes Before Patients“In Canada, socialized medicine has been exalted to the status of a sacrament, and to criticize it, either in theory or in practice, is tantamount to heresy. Dr. Whatley dares to do both, and with such clarity of argument and abundance of evidence, that no reasonable or fair-minded person could fail to be convinced. What Dr. Whatley has demonstrated, in this beautifully written and engaging volume, is that socialized medicine fails to meet the most fundamental moral obligation of health care: to place the patient’s interests above all else.”Dr. Harley Price, University of Toronto“Whatley… insists that our focus should be on the patients, the people the system is supposed to serve but whose interests are too easily sacrificed in the name of some pretty but ineffectual or even destructive bureaucratic theory. I have been thinking about the health care system for thirty years yet I found Whatley’s book packed with new insights and courageous thinking. A cure for what ails us.”Brian Lee Crowley, Managing Director, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute“When you are getting a diagnosis from your doctor, you want the truth. If you want a truthful diagnosis about our health care system, you must read this book. With precision, wisdom, and verve, Dr. Shawn Whatley has fearlessly dissected the rot that plagues Canadian socialized medicine. Can you handle the truth?”Bruce Pardy, Professor of Law, Queen’s University“For someone like me who operates at the other end of the political spectrum, reading Dr. Shawn Whatley’s latest book and its wholesale bludgeoning of the concept of socialized medicine is an uncomfortable experience… You may not agree with his politics, but Dr. Whatley asks uncomfortable questions that deserve serious answers.” Pat Rich (Veteran) Medical writer, editor and social media commentator Former Editor-in-Chief, The Medical Post and Publisher, CMAJ

WE Charity had changed the game.In its 25 years, the international development charity and youth empowerment movement impacted lives the world over. Innovation was at its core: while most charities focus on making the world a better place for our children, WE Charity focused on making better children for our world.Founded by the ubiquitous Kielburger brothers, WE Charity operated more like a Silicon Valley start-up than a traditional NGO. From creating stadium-filling events with A-list celebrity ambassadors to building schools, infrastructure, a hospital and even a university at lightning speed, the organization was always full-throttle. Its for-profit partner, ME to WE, filled shelves with socially-conscious products that allowed consumers to track the impact of their spending, invited young people and families to visit and work in communities WE Charity supported and channelled proceeds back into the charity to make it self-sustaining.Unique and disruptive, WE generated energy, engagement, and accolades. But it also bred misunderstanding and, in some quarters, resentment. With a long history of propelling youth to act in support of myriad causes—making “doing good doable,” the slogan went—WE Charity was the ideal candidate to administer the Canada Student Services Grant (CSSG) program. The program, if it had happened, involved matching students within non-profits in a summer in which Covid had stolen most job opportunities. And then, WE Charity in Canada was gone. It didn’t crumble. It crashed.Unwittingly caught in the crosshairs of a partisan fight that reflects the increasing “Americanization” of Canadian politics, WE Charity was forced to shutter its doors in Canada.Once a media darling with politicians of all stripes clamouring to appear at its events, the charity was suddenly a pariah accused (falsely) of a litany of wrongdoings: political cronyism; governance failures; heavy-handed decision-making by executives; lining the pockets of the founders; manipulating children; mistreating donors; racism and international corruption. Many were shocked. Detractors were delighted. Led by fringe commentators, the media quickly piled on. Allies who spoke out were castigated and forced to take cover. But while most Canadians have heard of the so-called “WE Charity Scandal”—at times forming strong views—few are able to recount the true facts. Misperceptions and confusion have ruled the day. And many of the most important voices—including those of educators and young people—have gone unreported and unheard. In this book, former WE board member and lawyer Tawfiq Rangwala unpacks the evidence and provides the critical context around the headline-grabbing controversies that have shaped the narrative.Drawing on the factual record, his personal experiences inside the organization, and extensive interviews with supporters and critics, Rangwala cuts through the fog and explains what really happened, why it happened, and who should be held to account. The world needs to have a balanced perspective on what this International charity has achieved while coming to terms with how the two founders handled the controversy in front of the cameras during testimony.Along the way, we learn what has been lost and the personal cost to Canadians and people around the world.More than just a story of the rise and fall of an iconic global charity, this is a cautionary tale of the collateral damage that can be levelled by unchecked partisan politics, social media pundits, and sensationalist headlines. In the end, Canadians are left to ponder whether the real “scandal” is the demise of WE Charity and the values of fair play and due process that most of us hold dear.

"The Mosaic Effect is probably the most thoroughly researched, accurate, and vastly important book that every Canadian should read. The Chinese playbook is credibly documented with support from authoritative sources. I would make this book mandatory reading in every intelligence agency in the Five Eyes, NATO, and the free world."Dr. Gregory Carpenter, Former National Security Agency Official and co-author of Reverse Deception: Organized Cyber Threat Counter-ExploitationWe live in two parallel worlds—one that exists in plain sight, governed by laws and borders, where the illusion of security prevails. The other, concealed in shadows, is the battleground of a silent war masterminded by the relentless Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Their audacious objective? To dismantle their primary adversary, the "United States of America," and assert global dominance by 2050. But the CCP's ambition extends far beyond America's borders; it's a global conquest where traditional warfare takes a back seat, replaced by covert operations masked beneath layers of legitimate organizations and respected figures. In this clandestine conflict, no shots are fired, and the chosen weapons are social chaos and economic manipulation. The vanguard of the CCP's covert assault is an enigmatic trio, known discreetly as the Trinity, acknowledged by the USA's intelligence elite—the CIA, DIA, DEA, and State Department. The Trinity represents an unholy alliance between PRC intelligence agencies, the influential Chinese business elite, and the notorious triads. This strategic infiltration began over three decades ago, gaining entry into the United States through its northern neighbour, Canada, exploiting immigration fraud as its gateway. The 49th parallel, which divides the USA and Canada—the world's longest undefended border—became the backdrop for the CCP's sinister machinations. The CCP methodically constructed a United Front network in Canada, subduing or directing individuals and groups to serve their agenda. It invites you to peer into the covert realm manipulated by the CCP within the Western sphere. This isn't merely a story—it's a high-stakes narrative of intrigue and espionage that offers an intimate look into a dimension of global affairs concealed from public gaze. Welcome to a world of international espionage, intrigue, and the relentless pursuit of democratic values, all woven into a narrative that demands the attention of discerning readers immersed in global politics and the preservation of democracy. For those who are well-versed in global politics, espionage aficionados, and public policy writers, "The Mosaic Effect" is your exclusive passageway into this clandestine world—a must-read that grants you access to the intricacies of international power struggles and the relentless quest for freedom and democracy

Since the beginning of organized societies, power and leadership have operated in human hierarchies, which are concentrating power in an accelerating manner, according to the comprehensive analysis of Dr. Anders Corr in his book "The Concentration of Power: Institutionalization, Hierarchy & Hegemony.""This sweeping study belongs next to Niall Ferguson and Jared Diamond in our understanding of how the world works and how it can work Letter.” -James Kraska, Harvard Law School"A must-read for legislators, military strategists, leading academics, regulators, and anyone interested in the existential threat that the concentration of economic, political, and informational power in an illiberal country like China creates for the leadingdemocracies of the world.” - Kyle Bass, Billionaire investor"...erudite and realistic appraisal of 21st-century power politics.” - Alex Gray, former Chief of Staff, White House National Security CouncilFrom The Book:"China’s influence in US politics has coincided with the industrialization of China, at the expense of a deindustrializing US. Global corporations, to which US politicians answer, fled high wages and environmental regulations in the US for low wages and lax environmental standards in China. Now, the US is paying the price and might not recover sufficiently to defend itself against China’s growing military. The strategic ambitions of one nation can and have upset the United Nations and the balance between powers. Now the Western world must understand the imminent threats from the hegemonic ambitions of China."Hierarchy is the "institutionalization of power," according to Dr. Corr’s The Concentration of Power, an institutionalization that is concentrating and accelerating over historical time, from prehistory to the present. Corr develops twelve historical theories and applies them to the greatest conflicts of the past and present, including during the age of empires, the present competition between superpowers such as the United States and China, as well as conflicts between the nation-state and emerging supranational powers such as the European Union and United Nations. Corr's theories apply to domestic politics as well, as illustrated by the evolution of conflicts between communism, fascism, and liberal democracy. Corr argues that the concentration of power acts as a ratchet. It concentrates when conditions are ripe, and force is applied. Due to mechanisms like subsidies, transfers, and corruption, however, power does not easily return to an unconcentrated state whenconditions are not ripe. This dynamic of the ratchet drives international and domestic concentration of power, with no apparent end other than a global illiberal hegemon at some point in the future. Given the meteoric rise of the Chinese Communist Party since its founding in 1921, the CCP could well be the “end of history” as defined by a future hegemon that achieves the stability of its own global control.Corr problematizes historical theories that believe in unilinear progress toward an egalitarian future, or an oscillation of power concentration throughout history, with equal periods of aggregation and disaggregation of power. Instead, he convincingly argues that the evidence points towards an overarching direction in history that has an illiberal end.In sum, the Concentration of Power is a short history of the world, from the beginning to what the evidence indicates should be its logical conclusion. From politics to unions, associations, corporations, and the military, Dr. Corr analyzes them and provides readers with a sense of what the world could face if we allow hierarchy to continue its historical development toward global and illiberal hegemony. Be it in China, the United States, or the European Union, all are vying for global influence and the utilization of the structure of the United Nations to promote either the principles of human rights and democracy or in the case of Beijing, the exact opposite. This clash between democracy and autocracy on a global level could turn into a final war of world proportions. No greater stakes have ever existed in world history.

Benedict Rogers first went to China at age 18 to teach English for six months in Qingdao (1992), three years after the Tiananmen Square massacre. That opened the door to a thirty-year adventure with China, from teaching English in schools and hospitals to working as a journalist in Hong Kong documenting the plight of refugees escaping from Beijing-backed satellite dictatorships and then campaigning for human rights in China. In 2017, on the orders of Beijing, he was denied entry to Hong Kong, 20 years after he had moved to the city and began his working life as a journalist and activist. This book tells the story of his fight for freedom for the peoples of China and neighbouring countries Myanmar and North Korea and sets out how a global movement for human rights in China is emerging and what the free world should do next. It describes the importance of the "China Nexus" in the author's journey and geopolitics and its challenges. Pioneering international inquiries into forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience, the genocide of the Uyghurs and global action for Hong Kong, as well as highlighting the Vatican's silence, the author has been at the heart of advocacy for human rights in China in recent years. Rogers takes the readers on a journey through some of the leaders and participants in the Human rights activities that China has suppressed since its inception in 1949. He goes on to dispute and lays to rest all of the specious claims by the tyrants in Beijing that all Chinese citizens are equal and are afforded human and civil rights. Currently, the regime is engaged in re-education, cultural assimilation, and multiple genocides, leading to bettercitizens for China and the world if one believes Chinese officials.

This newly updated book provides readers with over 18,000 words of new information regarding the infiltration of China, Russia and Iranian agents to undermine the very democracy we hold dear. Politicians and business elite including former Ambassador to Canada, Dominic Barton facilitated and helped the criminal enterprises get a secure hold in the West. Cooper has exposed the close ties between Chinese nationals who are dedicated to Beijing and have bought influence with all political parties in Canada. It's about time that former PM's cut their lucrative arrangements with the PRC and Cooper makes a compelling case as to how money through these networks has undermined our political process and policy engagement with the Peoples's Republic of China.

A Note from the AuthorThis book turns on secrets. One secret is buried in the deep, dark forest of Katyn, Poland. The other in the pages of a notebook kept in a modest café in Lwow, an ancient Polish city. The principal contributors to the Scottish Book, as the notebook was called, were professors and several pure mathematicians from the nearby university. While the mathematicians’ musings were dismissed by some as esoteric scribblings, when the Nazis overran Poland in 1939 the Book mysteriously vanished from its hiding place in the café. Some of its authors vanished too, fleeing to America to avoid certain death. With their freedom came recruitment for the Manhattan Project. Also very real are little-known places like Bad Nenndorf, the British interrogation center for hardcore Nazis before they were sent to Ashcan, the manor house near London for a three-dimensional and certainly more aggressive “debriefing”; Wünsdorf, the principal oversight warren for the Wehrmacht OKW during World War Two and the victorious Soviet Occupation forces in the Cold War Era; and the Hill of Goats located in the chilling forest of lost souls—a place called Katyn. A thought, then, to keep uppermost in your mind as you read this story. If the Scottish Book was of little importance then why, as a ruthless world war reached its ugly end, did the NKVD, Gestapo and yes, even the Allies, desperately seek to find and secure its contents? Why has its existence not factored into the telling of Second World War history? After years of in-depth research, I believe I have discovered an extremely plausible look into what might have been and, in all probability, one of the last great secrets of the Second World War. Until now. Moscow Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik (The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) 8 July 1937 Before 1917, Alexander Fedin had been a key activist in the Marxist Underground, personally in charge of smuggling illegal literature between Russia and Europe. After the Revolution, his close friendship with Lenin had propelled him to become secretary to the influential Moscow Party Central Committee and after that to a lofty post within the Comintern, the international organization of the Communist Party. As befitting his status, the Fedins were provided an apartment on the top floor of the House on the Embankment, the principal residence for Party élite, located as it was on the tadpole-shaped island of Balchug, a mere stone’s throw from the Kremlin and the ominous lair of the Supreme Leader. Perhaps what ultimately doomed Fedin had been his speech at the most recent plenum of Central Committee, where he accused the Narodnyi Komissariat Vnutrennikh Del (NKVD) of fabricating evidence. He called for a commission to review the overseas work of the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the Soviet Union. Perhaps it was the private comments he had made to a close circle of friends as he entered the conference hall of the Supreme Soviet for the 1936 Comintern—boldly honest words about the failure of the State to adequately support the struggling comrades of the Republic in the Spanish Civil War at a time when Franco’s Nationalists triumphantly advanced on Madrid.Perhaps. They came for him near midnight, seven hard-faced men arriving simultaneously in a matching set of Zis 101s, the black-lacquered saloon car so shamelessly modeled on the American Buick Roadmaster, and so capriciously favored by the sinister flying squads of the NKVD. Ironically, the arrest when it came did not shock Batya. He had prepared for it. He had transferred his savings book and valuables to his wife Lara and destroyed some private notebooks. Escorted by the burly agents of the State, he carried with him only a small suitcase containing a dressing gown and toothbrush. The next day the NKVD broke into the apartment and took away family valuables, cash and savings books, a radio, a bicycle, coats, sheets, linen, even teacups. They then sealed the door to Batya’s private study with wax.On Tuesday the 3rd of August, 1937, along with 126 other prisoners, Alexander Sergeyevich Fedin was tried by a military tribunal of the Supreme Soviet. He was charged with being a leader of a Fascist spy ring of Trotskyists covertly operating within the Comintern. The death certificate, which contained the names of the convicted, had been officially signed before the trial began. At the top of the document there was a brief handwritten note: Za – “in favour” - Shoot all 127. I. Stalin.....The book is a thriller from every angle and readers will be intirgued how this last great secret is very muh part of Putin's war on Ukraine.

In The China Freedom Trap, Dolkun Isa details his experiences working as a Uyghur political figure in the West and the barriers he has faced as a result of China's growing influence on liberal institutions. He describes his co-founding of the World Uyghur Congress and the ways in which China has attempted to disrupt and discredit Uyghur activism to further their agenda. This influence was perhaps most evident in the INTERPOL Red Notice that shadowed Isa for 21 years and almost cost him his life as he narrowly escaped extradition to China. In the midst of detention and deportation in democratic countries, Isa also finds himself uncovering corruption and peeling back the layers of the liberal institutions to find China at its rotting core.his book serves as a historical account of the political activities and behind-the-scenes diplomatic battles between China, the Uyghurs, other interested or invested countries and institutions; a personal account of Isa's struggle for the freedom of himself and his people.Ultimately is serves as a warning to other activists, policymakers, and interested parties: China's power and influence run deeper than most can fathom, they are growing, and they cannot be ignored.

“All it takes is one column to pull you in. Rich in humour, overflowing in ideas. Such is the life of a weekly newspaper columnist. Unable to ignore the urge any longer, in What I Wish I Said: Confessions of a Columnist, author Jaime Watt has collected forty-eight of his most eye-opening, illuminating, and provocative Toronto Star columns and with humour, candour, and wit, he’s responded to each with what he wishes he’d said. The collection also features contributions from former senator and columnist André Pratte and from journalist and former editor-in-chief of the Toronto Star Michael Cooke. Widely regarded as Canada’s leading high-stakes communications strategist and the architect of groundbreaking campaigns that transformed politics with their boldness and creativity, Watt brings his insight to bear on some of the most vexing and consequential issues in Canadian life by reappraising his past work.Across six topical subject areas—civil liberties and human rights, portraits of leaders, the Liberal Party in power, the Conservative Party in opposition, the Donald Trump presidency, and the COVID-19 crisis—this subtle yet accessible collection offers a distinctive look at recent times. Whether he got it right or wrong, Watt pulls no punches when it comes to critiquing—and at times lambasting—his past columns.Revisiting his best and worst takes, Watt and his co-author Breen Wilkinson look at what might have been said in the columns he has been writing for more than seven years. And as he does, Watt challenges with new perspectives and ideas, inviting readers to consider what they wish they might have said, to consider how their points of views, and even their values, may have changed with time.

In October 2022, the economist Emily Oster wrote a plea for a “pandemic amnesty”. After detailing various ill-conceived public health policies throughout the pandemic, Oster concluded that “The standard saying is that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. But dwelling on the mistakes of history can lead to a repetitive doom loop as well.” She reasoned that many admittedly poor, public health decisions were made in an information vacuum and that the salubrious thing to do going forward would be to forgive and forget.Oster was concerned about the fraying social fabric because of polarizing online discourse and urged the need to move forward. However, our anecdotal experience has shown a second common response to pandemic mishaps- going blank entirely on what occurred during the pandemic. We have observed a phenomenon of the surreal, sometimes inane, often unprecedented and unusual public health measures taken over the roughly three-year pandemic period being “memory holed”, where the mind completely fogs over. Many times in the course of writing this book, we have messaged one another upon unearthing one public policy absurdity upon another: the City of Toronto taping off cherry blossoms, Quebec requiring unvaccinated people to be chaperoned in plexiglass carts through the essential aisles of big-box stores. We are not psychologists, but no doubt there is an evolutionary benefit to allowing a collective trauma to dissolve into the slip-stream: it’s unproductive to dwell on how we got by and how our government coped in real-time. Our memories are warped, first, by the “primacy effect”— our tendency to remember “firsts” exemplified by people universally naming George Washington when asked to recall former U.S. presidents. Most people have a crystal clear memory of the moment their plague year started in earnest— for us and many others; it was March 11, 2020, the day the NBA suspended games for the rest of the season.

Sam Cooper started exposing the CCP's malfeasances abroad long before "China reporting" was popular. Thanks to his and a few others' selfless perseverance, Canadians and others worldwide have opened their eyes to the reality of the multiple threats posed by authoritarian China to the freedoms and values we hold dear. Doing so is not without a cost, as Chinese dissidents and diaspora communities around the world know all too well. Sam has and continues to bear that cost, head held high. We owe him and those who worked with him an immense debt of gratitude and a duty to act. Laura Harth, Quote, Campaign Director, Safeguard Defenders, RomeWilful Blindness, Foreign Interference, and Elite and State Capture build on the compelling narrative that has cemented Samuel Cooper's reputation as a premier investigative journalist, now under the banner of The Bureau. Hybrid Warfare does not involve firing a single shot but rather winning the hearts and minds of those in power to influence the decision-making apparatus. Cooper's findings now reveal how the Chinese Communist Party used its network and money to influence the outcome of the 2019 and 2021 elections. As the Hogue Commission unfolds, the government continues to block access to key documents that could shed light on a scandal that won't go away for the Liberal government. This explosive update makes Wilful Blindness a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the depth of political corruption, elite capture and foreign influence shaping our world today. Cooper also shows readers how China, Iran, and Russia work with organized crime as part of their Transnational Repression Operations worldwide that have targeted diaspora communities from China here in Canada and around the world. However, Canada was the soft underbelly for the PRC to infiltrate and undermine with their eyes clearly on the prize. The USA. In 1982, three of the most influential men in Asia convened in Hong Kong to shape the future of the city’s handover to the People’s Republic of China. This pivotal meeting saw Chinese business magnates Henry Fok and Li Ka-Shing align with Deng Xiaoping to advance the Chinese Communist Party's domestic and global ambitions. That day's decisions would ripple far beyond Hong Kong, reaching as far as Vancouver and reshaping the world. Soon, billions of dollars in Chinese investments poured into North America’s Pacific coast. British Columbia’s government casinos became conduits for global criminals, facilitating the influx of deadly narcotics into Canada and laundering billions of drug money into Vancouver’s real estate market. This was no accident.A web of accomplices—revenue-hungry governments, casino and real estate firms with connections to dubious offshore wealth, complicit lawyers and bankers, and an unresponsive RCMP—allowed organized crime to flourish. The consequences of this greed, corruption, and wilful blindness are staggering. Drug cartels, particularly the Big Circle Boys—transnational narco-kingpins with ties to corrupt Chinese officials and industrial tycoons—have infiltrated significant sectors of Canada’s economy. As dirty money inflated Vancouver’s real estate market, the social toll became evident: a fentanyl crisis ravaging North American cities, declining life expectancy in Canada, and an unattainable housing market for the middle class. But the story extends beyond real estate and overdoses.Samuel Cooper’s investigation reveals that the key players in the "Vancouver Model" of money laundering have turned Canada’s West Coast into a hub for CCP-led corporate and industrial espionage. These unscrupulous entrepreneurs have exported their criminal operations globally, impacting countries like Australia and New Zealand. The 2019 arrest of Cameron Ortis, the RCMP’s top intelligence official, raises alarming questions. Could Chinese transnational criminals and state actors have secured protection from within Canada’s national security apparatus? Could China and Iran possess insights into Canada’s most sensitive secrets and investigations?Ortis’s oversight of critical probes into transnational money laundering and espionage efforts underscores the depth of the infiltration. Wilful Blindness is a gripping narrative that follows tenacious investigators who challenged the institutionalized negligence and corruption behind the Vancouver Model. Drawing from extensive interviews with whistle-blowers, thousands of pages of government and court documents, and exclusive confidential materials, Cooper uncovers the shocking extent of Canada’s compromise. The book concludes with a startling revelation about the extent of the infiltration and outlines crucial steps Canada must take to realign with its “Five Eyes” allies and restore national security. In the third edition of his gripping international bestseller, investigative journalist Sam Cooper unveils the explosive narrative of corruption, crime, and complicity that has infiltrated the West. Wilful Blindness dives deep into the murky world of narcos, tycoons, and Chinese Communist Party agents, revealing how they have embedded themselves into the fabric of Western society. Drawing from extensive interviews with whistle-blowers and thousands of pages of government and court documents, Cooper exposes the dark underbelly of political and financial systems. This book is a testament to Cooper's relentless pursuit of the truth, from the shocking revelations of money laundering in Vancouver casinos to the high-stakes real estate deals masking illicit activities. The explosive NSICOP report from parliament suggests MPs from the NDP, Liberals and Conservatives have been compromised and may well be committing treason through their Wilful Blindness or direct engagement with PRC agents if only we had laws to prosecute them. What if one of Canada’s quietest provinces had become a staging ground for a foreign power? What if the red cliffs and tranquil shores of Prince Edward Island masked something more troubling—something that reached from Charlottetown to Beijing?Canada Under Siege is an investigation into how the Chinese Communist Party may have quietly infiltrated Canada’s smallest province. At the heart of this inquiry is a fundamental question:How did a place known for simplicity and serenity become a strategic beachhead for elite capture, covert influence, and international subversion?Through a series of disturbing leads, veteran investigators Michel Juneau-Katsuya (CSIS) and Garry Clement (RCMP) follow the money, land deals, and political alignments that suggest Prince Edward Island may have become something more than a rural outpost—it may be a case study in how foreign influence embeds itself deep within democratic systems.Their investigation begins with Frank Zhou and Sherry Huang, Chinese Canadian entrepreneurs whose presence on PEI extends far beyond tourism brochures. What role did they play in influencing political leaders, including former premiers Robert Ghiz and Wade MacLauchlan? Did the Provincial Nominee Program—intended to promote immigration—become a tool for geopolitical leverage? Was Anne of China Inc. just a cultural venture, or a Trojan horse for soft power messaging disguised as economic partnership? The book asks: Why did so few challenge this convergence of political power and foreign capital? Why were public servants who raised concerns sidelined, silenced, or removed? Why did nobody act? Then there is the mystery of the Bliss and Wisdom Buddhist group, led by Zhen-Ru (Mary Jin). Promising to build a “Thousand Year Monastery” on the island, this Taiwan-based monastic group has acquired vast tracts of land through monastics and affiliated donors. Is this a closed religious community simply seeking peace—or something else entirely? Could its links to the Buddhist Association of China suggest a deeper form of ideological control under religious guise?Multiple sources, including the elusive Venerable Fan Yin, who quietly departed in 2017, hint at internal power struggles and shifting allegiances. But why has no one investigated who funds this expansion? Why is there so little public scrutiny?Across interviews with whistleblowers, activists, and security insiders, Canada Under Siege uncovers unanswered questions and disturbing patterns—from aborted RCMP probes to quiet land transfers, from surveillance of diaspora communities to stalled legislation like Bill C-70.Why did CSIS warnings go ignored? Why is there still no foreign agent registry in Canada? What happens when political convenience outweighs national security? The final chapters take the reader across the Pacific to Taipei, where one investigator pursues a final lead—one that may reshape how we understand influence, identity, and the global battle over Tibetan Buddhism and the succession of the Dalai Lama. This is not a book of questions but that of conclusions. Most importantly it is a dossier of questions—serious ones—about the fragility of democratic institutions, the nature of infiltration, and how a tiny province may have quietly become the front line of a much larger conflict. The people and politicians who embraced both Chinese investment and monastic virtue may find that the made a faustian bargain that will impact the island for generations.

Andrew Hale-Byrne, a student at the Grenville Christian College, tells the harrowing story of how an elitist cult on Cape Cod, founded by two self-proclaimed holy women, managed to infiltrate and take over a preppy Anglican boarding school in Ontario. With patronage from the highest levels of Canada's government and business elites, Grenville College and its partners actively covered up abuse decades of abuse and malpractice. What followed were many years of institutional violence -- psychological, physical and sexual abuse -- against the children of the school, all under the guise of establishment Anglicanism. Andrew chronicles the history of the abused victims and how he exposed the school management, the cult and the Ontario establishment. The upper-crust cult on Cape Cod was a “who’s who” list of the cream of society, including a Rockefeller heiress, a Chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a Chairman of Arthur Young. Andrew provides a look inside the peculiar world of a religious cult at the apex of American and Canadian societies, from the dizzying heights of wealth that backed the school to the harrowing suffering of students. Due to Andrew's exposé, many victims of abuse have been targeted by retaliation campaigns launched by the school, its defenders and a corrupt Anglican hierarchy. However, death threats have not intimidated Andrew from his mission in his fight for justice, which culminated in the Canadian courts. Matters pertaining have now been proven in the Canadian courts. In the past two years, four judges in Ontario ruled in favour of Grenville Christian College litigants, awarding them 12 million dollars in damages. This was the first class action under the 1992 Class Proceedings Act of Ontario to go to a full common issues trial and the first to win. All previous court actions have been settled out of court. While such a victory has been won, this sum is a mere pittance compared to the pain and suffering many have endured and continue to live with every day. Countless former students have committed suicide, including recently in the United States, where a former cult member self-immolated in front of the Israeli embassy. As the saga continues to twist and turn beyond the courtroom and into the lives of Grenville’s victims, Andrew presents a work documenting the extent of the school’s actions and those that covered up the systemic abuse emanating from this once-revered institution. These include four Lieutenant Governors, Members of Parliament, Diplomats, and Anglican Bishops.

Skyrocketing energy prices are placing downward pressure on economic growth throughout the world. There seems to be no relief in sight, with hundreds of millions without access to reliable energy and with global energy consumption expected to grow by 50 percent over the next 30 years. Some would impose energy rationing—or in other words, slow human progress. But with nearly 46 percent of the world’s population living on less than $5.50 per day, slowing human progress is unacceptable. The only solution is more energy and lots of it.Jack Spencer, in his upcoming book, Going Nuclear: Reestablishing American Commercial Nuclear Dominance, argues that nuclear energy offers real answers to power our homes and industries, clean our air and water, and maybe even take us to Mars. However, we have been getting nuclear power wrong for decades.Skeptics say that nuclear energy is too expensive and threatens the world with the proliferation of nuclear weapons material and radioactive waste. Proponents say that nuclear power needs and deserves the support of the state and the taxpayer, cradle to grave. The time has come, Spencer argues, to think big nuclear energy and pull it out of the time capsule that pop culture, environmental activists, lobbyists, peaceniks, and policymakers are all too content to leave nuclear in.Spencer writes that while the government-industry partnership that defined the early years of America’s commercial nuclear rise was essential to the nation’s security, reluctance to modernize that relationship has prevented the American nuclear industry from reaching its full potential. In its place, Spencer offers an alternative that shatters how we think about nuclear energy policy and realigns the responsibilities of government and industry with the incentives that will drive America to success.Going Nuclear describes why government intervention in the nuclear industry is a problem, how to move from the status quo to something new, and why such reforms will kick off an era of nuclear entrepreneurship and innovation. Over 70 years ago, nuclear energy entered the scene with great promise. Now more than ever, the world needs that promise delivered, and America can lead the way.
