“Long-distance walking is good for you and good for the earth... But most of all, walking is a joyful celebration of life and the diverse, beautiful, and curious world in which we live.” —from the IntroductionWalking is simple, but it can also be profound. In an increasingly complex and frantic world, walking can simplify our lives. It encourages intimate contact with places and people, promotes health, and is one of the most sustainable forms of recreation. Robert and Martha Manning invite readers to explore the pleasures of long-distance walking in their inspiring new book, Walking Distance. At the heart of Walking Distance are firsthand descriptions of thirty of the world’s great long-distance hikes, spanning six continents and ranging from inn-to-inn to backpacking trips. Each entry—from Turkey’s Lycian Way to Vermont’s Long Trail—features personal anecdotes, natural and cultural history, and useful tips, including suggestions for preparing for hikes and for additional reading. We live in the age of Big Data, awash in a sea of ever-expanding information—a constant deluge of facts, statistics, models, and projections. The human mind is quickly desensitized by information presented in the form of numbers, and yet many important social and environmental phenomena, ranging from genocide to global climate change, require quantitative description. The essays and interviews in Numbers and Nerves explore the quandary of our cognitive responses to quantitative information, while also offering compelling strategies for overcoming insensitivity to the meaning of such information. With contributions by journalists, literary critics, psychologists, naturalists, activists, and others, this book represents a unique convergence of psychological research, discourse analysis, and visual and narrative communication. At a time of unprecedented access to information, our society is frequently stymied in its efforts to react to the world’s massive problems. Many of these problems are systemic, deeply rooted in seemingly intransigent cultural patterns and lifestyles. In order to sense the significance of these issues and begin to confront them, we must first understand the psychological tendencies that enable and restrict our processing of numerical information. In the past two decades, cognitive science has increasingly come to understand that we, as a species, think best when we allow numbers and nerves, abstract information and experiential discourse, to work together. This book provides a roadmap to guide that collaboration. It will be invaluable to scholars, educators, professional communicators, and anyone who struggles to grasp the meaning behind the numbers.

The OSU Press is proud to introduce Linus Pauling's How to Live Longer and Feel Better to a new generation of readers interested in achieving excellent health. A New York Times bestseller when it was first published in 1986, Pauling's seminal work proposes taking vitamins and minerals to prevent disease and live a long life. Eminently readable and challenging on many levels, the book compiled for a popular audience a generation of scientific knowledge and helped to revolutionize the way Americans think about nutrition.Pauling's simple, inexpensive plan suggests avoiding sugar, stress, and smoking; working in a job that you like; and being happy with your family. To avoid serious illness and enjoy a longer life, he recommends taking vitamins for optimal health and as insurance against disease.Pauling greatly influenced subsequent research regarding the role of nutrition in healthy living, coining the term ""orthomolecular medicine"" to describe the practice of using vitamins and other substances normally present in the body to improve health and fight viruses, cancer, cardiovascular disease, allergies, arthritis, and other illnesses. Since 1986 the scientific community has paid renewed attention to the field of nutrition; clinical and longevity studies have examined the links between vitamin C and health, for example. Some of Pauling's findings have been challenged, but the essential tenets of his thesis on the importance of nutritional supplements remain undisputed.A new historical introduction by Melinda Gormley details Pauling's life and his fascinating intellectual growth, from his formative years as a molecular chemist to his peace activism and his later interest in nutrition. His extraordinary ability to cross disciplinary boundaries (specifically, using his knowledge of molecular structure to rethink the role of micronutrients in disease) combined with his accessible writing for a lay audience, make How to Live Longer and Feel Better a classic. This new edition includes information on additional resources from the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University.Whether one reads Pauling's book for his prescription for healthy living, for an understanding of his impact on nutritional science today, or for its historical importance, one cannot escape the conclusion that diet and lifestyle are the key to disease prevention.

From an unlikely beginning as an agency transcriptionist in her hometown of Washington, DC, Gloria Brown became the first African American woman to attain the rank of forest supervisor at the US Forest Service. As a young widow with three children, she transferred to Missoula, Montana, and embarked on a remarkable journey, ultimately leading the Siuslaw National Forest in Oregon and later the Los Padres in California. The story of Brown’s career, from clerical worker to forest supervisor, unfolds against the backdrop of a changing government agency and a changing society.  As scholars awaken to the racist history of public land management and the ways that people of color have been excluded from contemporary notions of nature and wilderness, Brown’s story provides valuable insight into the roles that African Americans have carved out for themselves in the outdoors generally and in the field of environmental policy and public lands management specifically. Drawing on her powerful communication and listening skills, her sense of humor, and her willingness to believe in the basic goodness of humanity, Brown conducted civil rights trainings and shattered glass ceilings, all while raising her children alone.  Written in an engaging and accessible style with historian Donna Sinclair, Brown’s story provides a fascinating case study for public administration and contributes to a deeper understanding of the environmental and civil rights movements of the twentieth century, particularly the role that racial discrimination has played in national forests, parks, and other wilderness spaces. It also highlights issues of representation in the federal government, women’s history, the history of the American West, and literature associated with African American experiences in predominately white societies.

The craft brewing renaissance of recent decades has brought a renewed interest in hops. These vigorous vines, with their flavorful flowers, have long played a key role in beer making and in Oregon’s agricultural landscape. This compendium of photographs offers a visual dive into the distinctive physical presence of hops in the state. From pickers and poles to cones and oasts, Kenneth I. Helphand brings the landscape and culture of hops to life. For much of the first half of the twentieth century, Oregon was the leading producer of hops in the United States, with the Willamette Valley deemed “the garden spot of the world for the cultivation of hops.” The author has scoured archives across the state to gather together images of the hops landscape in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The photographs featured in Hops portray pickers of all backgrounds through different eras of agricultural practice. Here are children, nuns, families, immigrants, and college students in fields, hop driers, and tent camps. The photos range from the candid to the highly professional, including images from Dorothea Lange’s iconic Farm Security Administration work. The 85 high-quality photographs are accompanied by captions that provide, variously, factual background, selections from oral histories, and visual guidance. A historical essay provides a short overview of the plant’s history and the world of hop growing and picking.

John Haines spent the better part of two decades traveling the world: biking through Tibet, kayaking the length of the Niger River, taking the Trans-Siberian Express from Beijing to East Berlin. Various friends and compatriots—frequently from his hometown of Laramie, Wyoming—accompanied Haines on his trips. In 1999, everything changed. While leaping from a moving train in the Czech Republic—something he’d done many times in many places—Haines fell and broke his neck. Damage to his spine left him without use of his legs and radically changed his life.In the years since, Haines has added writer to a resume that already included baker and banker. In Never Leaving Laramie, he pulls stories about travelling into an exploration of home: How a rural home fueled and sustained a worldview. How beauty and danger blend together with humility and ego. How itchy feet combine with the comfort of home in Laramie, a tough railroad town turned college town and a launchpad for wanderers. Throughout, Haines returns to ideas of rivers and movement. He ends with a chapter on a different kind of travel, reflecting on how his accident did and did not change him and the varied ways that people can move through the world.

Tina Ontiveros was born into timber on both sides of the family. Her mother spent summers driving logging trucks for her family’s operation, and her father was the son of an itinerant logger, raised in a variety of lumber towns, as Tina herself would be.A story of growing up in turmoil, rough house recounts a childhood divided between a charming, mercurial, abusive father in the forests of the Pacific Northwest and a mother struggling with small-town poverty. It is also a story of generational trauma, especially for the women—a story of violent men and societal restrictions, of children not always chosen and frequently raised alone.Ontiveros’s father, Loyd, looms large. Reflecting on his death and long absence from her life, she writes, “I had this ridiculous hope that I would get to enjoy a functional relationship with my father, on my own terms, now that I was an adult.” In searingly honest, straightforward prose, rough house is her attempt to carve out this relationship, to understand her father and her family from an adult perspective. While some elements of Ontiveros’s story are universal, others are indelibly grounded in the logging camps of the Pacific Northwest at the end of the twentieth century, as the lumber industry shifted and contracted. Tracing her childhood through the working-class towns and forests of Washington and Oregon, Ontiveros explores themes of love and loss, parents and children, and her own journey to a different kind of adulthood.

Cascade Head, on the Oregon Coast between Lincoln City and Neskowin, has stunning ocean views, abundant recreational opportunities, and a rich history of ecological research and conservation. Its landscape and seascape support a multitude of species, some of which are threatened, such as the Oregon silverspot butterfly, spotted owl, and coho salmon. In The View from Cascade Head, Bruce Byers tells the fascinating story of this special place and the people who have worked to protect it. Drawing from his lifelong relationship with the Oregon Coast and recent experience living and working at Cascade Head, Byers weaves together personal observations, ecological science, and the history and philosophy of nature conservation in a series of interconnected essays.Cascade Head is Oregon’s only biosphere reserve, part of the international network of biosphere reserves coordinated by UNESCO. Biosphere reserves around the world are laboratories for understanding how humans affect ecosystems and models for how we can heal the human-nature relationship. The View from Cascade Head illustrates three main lessons: the actions and efforts of committed individuals can make a difference; ecological mysteries still abound despite decades of scientific research; and our worldviews—how we think about our place in nature—shape our individual and collective effect on the ecosystems we inhabit. Byers helps us understand how these lessons apply everywhere and can lead us toward a more sustainable relationship with our home planet.

For the first time in history, an international human-rights court has weighed the evidence that fracking and climate change systematically violate human rights. Bearing Witness presents the searing eyewitness testimony and ground-breaking legal arguments that persuaded the court that fracking and resulting climate warming breach both substantive and procedural rights guaranteed by international law, that governments are complicit in these rights-violations, and that the practice of fracking should be banned.

There are five layers of the ocean, though most of us alive will only ever see one. The deepest layer of the ocean is called by some the midnight zone. The only light comes from bioluminescence, created by animals themselves. In order to see, the creatures there must create their own light. They must move like solitary suns, encased in their own bubbles of freezing water. This layer is the most completely unexplored zone on the planet. Though it is hostile to humans, it also is fascinating beyond belief. If you had a chance to see it, wouldn't you want to go there? The year Mary is 38, the suicide of a stranger in a nearby reservoir compels her to make a change. She decides to strike out for Alaska and take a chance on love and home. She begins to learn how to travel in a small yellow kayak along the coast, contending with gales, high seas, and bears. She explores the different meanings of home: the perspectives of people who were born in this place and others who chose it, the first peoples who have been here for generations, and the ones who eventually leave. When she marries a man from another island, she is convinced that this time love will stick. She soon learns that navigating marriage is just as difficult as learning the ocean. Divided into sections detailing the main kayaking strokes, this memoir shows how each can be a metaphor for the lives we all pass through and the tools we need to stay afloat.

The tallest species of spruce, hemlock, fir, cedar, and pine trees on earth coexist in the old growth of the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest in Oregon’s Cascade Range. Set aside as a living laboratory by the U.S. Forest Service in 1948, the 16,000 acres represent a vital scientific endeavor: the long-term study of a single contained ecosystem. Here, for the first time, researchers from an enormous range of disciplines—forest scientists, botanists, entomologists, wildlife ecologists, soil biologists, and others—have assembled to examine the role of every working element in the life of a forest. In The Hidden Forest, veteran science writer Jon Luoma offers an absorbing account of how these scientists came to recognize the importance of natural forest ecosystems and how their research is revolutionizing forest management.Luoma takes readers into the hidden forest where researchers have discovered a host of species previously unknown to science, and interactions in the forest ecosystem that no one previously imagined. He describes projects dealing with the forest canopy, rotting logs, insects, fungi, wildlife, streams, and the effects of flood, fire, clear cutting, and volcanic eruption. And he tells the human story behind the research, capturing the shared excitement and wonder of scientific discovery. Along the way, Luoma provides a short course in such complex issues as forest succession, biodiversity, and the politics of forestry. In a new foreword, Jerry Franklin discusses the importance of dedicated, long-term research sites and comments on new discoveries that have emerged from forest ecosystem research since The Hidden Forest was first published.

Something Hidden in the Ranges is designed for readers interested in natural and environmental history and specifically the natural history of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. We all see the largest features of ecosystems - the impressively rugged mountain peaks, the clear blue lakes, and the extensive forests - but each of these readily visible features depends on largely invisible creatures and flows of material and energy. This book draws on a wide array of scientific research to tell stories such as how streams provide energy to the adjacent forest, how lake sediments record the history of pollutants entering the lake with wind-blown dust, and how a network of fungi keeps forests healthy. Individual chapters explore forests at lower and higher elevations and how trees rely on microbes in the soil, in the forest canopy, and even within individual pine needles to obtain the food they need.  Other chapters focus on subalpine lakes, mountain streams, beaver meadows, and alpine tundra. Written to be easily understood by any reader, this book will change the way you perceive and think about natural landscapes.

Rich with boyhood remembrances of the Pacific Northwest of the 1970s through the 1990s, I Have Not Loved You With My Whole Heart is a memoir of trauma, healing, faith, and violence, told in overlapping personal essays that pull the reader through turning points in a household crowded with dysfunction, and toward the healing that comes after reconciliation. At the book's center is a conflicted and contradictory relationship between the author and his father, the Rev. Renne Harris, a heavy-handed, alcoholic, Episcopal priest who came out in the height of the AIDS crisis and died of HIV in 1995, but not before finding a measure of peace and acceptance.

At times heartbreaking, at times harrowing, All the Leavings navigates the rugged terrain not just of the rural Oregon land where Laurie Easter has forged an off-the-grid life, but of the ragtag terrain of the human heart. At once quiet and searching, these essays lay bare the experience between mother and child, between living and dying, between the human world and nature. This is a book about love -- for the child who faces a health crisis, for the friend dying of aids, for the one entangled by addiction who then disappears -- while also examining the tenacity of the human condition. From one woman's perspective as a mother, wife, and friend, All the Leavings will take readers inside a wild Oregon rich with natural beauty, while asking questions and seeking answers, capturing an interior life and the cinematic beauty of the West in prose that is, ultimately, a redemption song. From the narrator's homebirth of her second child in an off-grid cabin to sojourns with cougars to the alternative community that grieves together the loss of one of their teenagers to suicide, place figures prominently in this non-linear, loosely chronological essay collection. All the Leavings employs a multitude of forms to probe the boundaries of mother-daughter relationships, privacy and secrets, guilt and forgiveness, crushing grief and abiding love. It will interest readers of memoir and personal essay, those who have suffered loss and grief, and those who appreciate place-based writing, particularly set in the Pacific Northwest.

Drawing on the author's experience as a paddler and as the leader of an environmental nonprofit working to protect and restore the Willamette River, this book illustrates what it is like to travel the Willamette River Greenway. It also provides a first hand account of how the State of Oregon and other entities fail to protect the river's water quality and habitat. The "greenway" is a lens through which to view both policy and practice in relation to the river's health.

Ann Stinson grew up on her family’s tree farm in southwestern Washington state, on a ridge above the Cowlitz River. After building a life in New York and Portland, she returned home at the age of fifty, when her brother’s death from cancer left her manager and co-owner of three hundred acres planted in Douglas fir, western red cedar, and ponderosa pine. The Ground at My Feet is a memoir about loss and grief as well as a portrait of a family, a region, and an industry. Combining personal story and research, Stinson weaves essays, poems, history, and science into a rich and layered account of life in a family forest in the Pacific Northwest. She maps interactions between the land and its people over two centuries: the Cowlitz peoples, homesteaders, and several generations of logging families who have worked the property. She follows her family’s logs as they become lumber for fence boards and suburban homes, touring a local cedar mill and traveling with her father to visit mills in Japan.Stinson adds a landowner’s voice to conversations about the human tendency to demand more of the land than it can sustain. With its uniquely personal view of the Pacific Northwest’s timber and forestry heritage, The Ground at My Feet is an engaging addition to the literature of the landscape and ecology of the West.

The Nighthawk's Evening: Notes of a Field Biologist is a work of science writing that will appeal to traditional birders, students, the new "punk birder" movement, and anyone who is fascinated by urban wildlife. It is the story of a woman who leaves her office job in Portland, Oregon, in her late-30s to become a wildlife biologist studying nighthawks.Birders have long puzzled over this acrobatic night-flying bird that nests on rooftops and flocks in the thousands as it treks from Alaska to Argentina and back every year. But what is like to hold a wild bird that few have seen up close? Nighthawks are strange animals, reptiles with feathers, sleepy if you stumble across them during the day, but quick, agile, and especially adept at survival. They have the ability to withstand extreme temperatures and adapt to many habitats, but, nonetheless, they are struggling in the Anthropocene.Gretchen Newberry investigates the hidden world of wildlife around us through this mysterious species. Her search for these illusive birds was an improvised and quixotic adventure. The book takes the reader along her journey, from beaches to forests, grasslands, and urban rooftops across North America. Along the way, she explores what nighthawks have meant to the peoples of North America, their uncertain future, and how their survival and role as bug eaters might address ongoing environmental issues at our farms and in our cities in an age of insect-borne diseases and agricultural pests.

Lord & Schryver, the first landscape architecture firm founded and operated by women in the Pacific Northwest, designed more than 250 gardens in Oregon and Washington, including the grounds for Reed College of Portland, Salem parks, and schools, public buildings and churches. Gaiety Hollow, the Salem house Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver built as a home and studio for themselves, is now owned by the Lord & Schryver Conservancy and (in non-pandemic times) open to the public. The Conservancy has lovingly restored the gardens at Gaiety Hollow according to Lord & Schryver's plans. They also manage, and have restored, the gardens at Deepwood, a Queen Anne house two blocks from Gaiety Hollow.Lord & Schryver met as young women and in 1929 established a highly successful landscape architecture firm in Salem; their work is acknowledged as one of the milestones in the history of garden design in the Northwest and beyond. Their firm is the only Oregon firm recognized in Pioneers of Landscape Architecture, compiled by the US National Park Service. The Cultural Landscape Foundation describes them as "consummate professionals in the broadest sense, as they worked to raise the profile of landscape architects by involving an audience beyond their clients. Their work represented a transition from a formal symmetrical style of garden design to one which responded in a distinctive way to the unique features of Northwest climate, soil, topography, and plant material."

Bird watching is by far the most popular outdoor recreation in the United States. That makes perfect sense, because their freedom of flight makes birds accessible to virtually all people everywhere -- along ocean beaches, lakeshores, rivers and creeks; on remote prairies and urban golf courses; in mountain forests and parched deserts; on Times Square and apartment house roofs; and in back yards everywhere. But due to habitat loss, pollution and climate change, there are three billion fewer birds in America today than there were in 1970. The logical conclusion to be drawn from this sad fact is that we need even more bird-watchers, people who might care enough about these wild, lovely creatures to do whatever they can to reverse this appalling decline. In his 80-plus years around birds, Michael Baughman has learned one immutable lesson: As long as you remain alive and human, the closer you get to birds, the more time you spend among them, the more you love them.

In the 1970s, Louise Wagenknecht returned to the Klamath River country of her childhood to take a job with the U.S. Forest Service, only to discover that navigating the shoals of professional and personal relationships as an adult was much more challenging than she ever dreamed. Over the next fifteen years, as she acquired knowledge and skills and successfully performed an outdoor job long thought to be a man's work, she found friends and allies, experienced a life-changing heartbreak, and over time came to realize that what the agency and its professional foresters thought they knew about the workings of the forest ecosystem was not only mistaken, but doomed to catastrophic failure in a new and warmer century.

In 1948, just weeks before his best friend, marine biologist Ed Ricketts died, John Steinbeck wrote of Ricketts process of discovery, noting that "a young, inquisitive, and original man might one morning find a fissure in the traditional technique of thinking. Through this fissure he might look out and find a new external world about him." A Tidal Odyssey a conversation about that "young, inquisitive, and original man" who found "a new external world about him" and so captivated the imagination of scientists and lay readers alike as he transformed our understanding of the seashore. This is a book about that remarkable man and his pathbreaking book about marine life on the Pacific Coast of North America. With his friend Jack Calvin, Ricketts authored his magnum opus, Between Pacific Tides (1939), a guide to the seashore invertebrates in one of the most prolific life zones in the world. He and Calvin describe the key field characteristics of the species, and then place them in their ecological context, by habitat, in a natural history-based narrative. At a time when almost all studies of life in the intertidal zones were taxonomic, Ricketts and Calvin revolutionized the field and helped to lay the groundwork for studies of the impact of environmental change on the natural world.By happenstance, Ed Ricketts is best known as a character in John Steinbeck's fiction. But the real man is obscured by Steinbeck's authorial license. Steinbeck's Doc is the quirky young man who reads Li Po and drinks beer milkshakes. He was also a serious marine biologist who conducted pioneering studies of life in the intertidal zones. He was a true renaissance man -- conversant in music and philosophy, poetry and mythology. Friendly with such notables as mythologist Joseph Campbell, experimental composer John Cage, and novelist Henry Miller, as well as with Steinbeck and many of the most eminent biologists of his time, he was a man for all seasons. This, then, is a book for readers who are interested in the world of Ed Ricketts as well as marine biology, intertidal ecology, and the manner in which ecological studies underpin our understanding of the impact of environmental change on the well being of our planet.

Louise Wagenknecht grew up in one of the West's last company lumber towns, a small community called Hilt on the California-Oregon border. There she witnessed the dying years of a unique way of life, the tail-end of the 1950s lumber boom that would devastate the ancient old-growth forests of the Klamath Mountains as well as the people of Hilt, whose lives were inextricably tied to the company lumber mill. White Poplar, Black Locust is the story of that transformation, but it is also something more-a noteworthy addition to the literature of place, and a sensitive and richly textured family memoir. As Wagenknecht unravels the threads that still bind her to both Hilt's history and her own, unforgettable characters emerge, and what should have been the happy ending to this story, the marriage of her divorced mother to a forester working for the Fruit Growers Supply Company, becomes instead the end of childhood innocence, foretelling the demise of the mill and the end of Hilt itself.

There are a number of conifer guides available for the Pacific Northwest. Most of these guides, however, focus on native cultivars. Master gardener Elizabeth Price has put together a new guide that includes ornamentals alongside natives, arguing that most people are not necessarily concerned with distinguishing between the two, especially in a residential setting. Based on her experiences teaching workshops on conifer identification and cultivation, Price has developed identification charts that are suitable for specialists but focused on making the information as accessible as possible for amateurs. Although the book’s primary goal is identification, it also weaves in natural history and a little personal narrative.

Humans have faced urgent crises over the past two years, and in the midst of those we still have the threat of climate change and other big, systemic problems facing our world. In this time of chaos and crisis, how do activists find the strength to carry on?In answer to this question, environmental philosopher Kathleen Dean Moore has assembled a collection of short essays that offer courage, hope, and even some laughter to the people who have for years been working for environmental sanity and social justice. Earth’s weary lovers, as Moore calls them, are tired, perplexed, and battered from all directions. Their hearts have so often been broken; it’s hard to go on, but it is morally impossible to quit. To these weary activists, Moore brings encouragement to join or keep on with the struggle—not entertaining distractions, but deep and honest reasons to remember that the struggle matters, now and in the future.Moore’s essays are matched with drawings by Canadian artist Bob Haverluck; together, they invite readers to take heart. Taking heart is not hope exactly, but maybe it’s courage. Not reassurance, but reason to persevere. Not the promise of good results—it does not depend on winning odds—but a call to integrity. Not strength, but stubbornness, which might be just as good. Not solutions to the planetary crisis, but some modest advice for the inevitable crisis of the heart. Not good cheer entirely, but a chance to grin, and gladness to be part of this strange and necessary work for the endangered Earth.
