The author looks at how the lowering of trade barriers and the move towards liberalisation, privatisation and outsourcing, have affected the working class. He shows how providing labour rights can be a more effective way of ensuring productivity. In this context, he examines the notion of ‘Decent Work’ as promoted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) that deals with rights and social protection of/for children, women workers and those belonging to socially oppressed groups in developing countries.

Written in the form of a professional memoir, the author describes the technical details and political intrigues behind these efforts. The book begins by describing his service with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in West Africa. It concludes with an account of an attempt to establish for WHO the ‘Health Leadership Service’, a young professionals programme modelled on the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the CDC. His story is supplemented with posters, photographs, and detailed charts and figures that bring to life a largely ignored public health triumph.

This book studies the interlinking of religious, social and political identities in modern Tamil Nadu. Through interviews with non-Brahmin r vai avas of many castes, but especially belonging to the lower-caste groups, it analyses their histories of discrimination, their negotiation of lived realities, and hopes for the future. The interviews all refer to the history of r vai avism, an historically important Hindu sect in the region, the religion's theology of caste inclusiveness, and history of Brahmin leadership exclusiveness. In addition, the author also addresses colonial changes, Telugu connections, the non-Brahmin movement, Dalit mobilisation, post-Independence caste hierarchies, government policies, party politics, Brahmin reactions, court cases, and inter-religious competition. Turbulent Transformations breaks new ground by highlighting radical non-Brahmin leaders in the colonial period. It probes the r vai ava connections of prominent political figures such as Periyar and Jayalalithaa. And it explores the relation of the temples, the state, and the Supreme Court over questions such as who is allowed to be a priest . This book provides insights into new configurations of democracy, caste and modern lived Hinduism. It fills the lacunae created by Brahmin narratives, scholarly studies focused on Tamil aivism or Christianity, and political and sociological analyses removed from the dynamic pulse of religion in interaction with the non-Brahmin movement over the past century.

Gendering minorities: Muslim women and the politics of modernity explores the politics of framing Muslim women’s identity in India. Against the backdrop of colonial modernity, nationalist movements and post-Independence dialogues, it provides details of the ‘feminist enterprises’ that Muslim women in Kerala were involved in at several historical junctures. Examining Muslim women’s negotiations with their cultural and religious identities, the author also analyses the exclusion and homogenization that did not allow them to be viewed as active political agents. Through oral narratives, folk songs, journal entries, little magazines and historical documents.

Through their deeply personal accounts, the contributors explore the relationship of their writings to place and space and thus present the many ways in which city-spaces are created in literature today.

What is Hinglish sociolect, insurrection or language? Why and how does Hinglish occupy such a prominent place in our daily language? What does it represent and how does it define our notions of self? Hinglish Live asks these and other questions about English and language mixing in contemporary India across a range of media domains from English teaching to advertising; FM radio to literature; newspapers to cinema; technology to TV programmes. The essays in this volume are interdisciplinary, juxtaposing the personal with the political, the academic with the popular, and are complemented by a selection of images that demonstrate how widespread the use of Hinglish is.

In the twenty-first century, for the first time in history, the world's urban population exceeded its rural population. However, the rural urban migration driving this urbanisation in developing countries has resulted in a growing informal economic sector and informal settlements such as slums. This informality lies at the heart of urban policy challenges in developing countries. This volume highlights the connected issues of urban housing, livelihoods and environment through perspectives from key emerging economies Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and Thailand so as to harness the different histories of different societies for an exploration of common contemporary problems. Researchers and practitioners working on policy formulation, critical research and grassroots activities from around the world provide case studies, micro-histories and macro-comparisons that shed light on the vexed problem of unchecked urbanisation in developing nations. Key questions are highlighted: the role of the state in low-income urban housing; the role of the community and civil society in the context of ethnic diversity and informality of urban growth; and the impact of liberalisation and globalisation on housing policies. The authors advocate involving the poor in housing questions so that they become negotiating partners in navigating solutions that affect their lives and livelihoods. Critiquing the imposition of a smart cities mentality onto ill-prepared urban spaces, they highlight the unequal burden this places on the urban poor and their ways of living, moving and working in the cities. Instead, the authors stress the need for creative, inclusive policies that can provide sustainable solutions for modern cities. This exciting and critically important volume will interest urban and environmental planners, policy-makers, civil society organisations and urban management professionals. Students and scholars of urban studies and urban sociology will also find these perspectives engaging.

A Short History of Australian Literature fills a gap in study materials for Indian readers interested in a country that shares a lot of colonial history, many sporting ties, and increasing diasporic connections. Australia is, however, a unique land that has developed its own idioms, cultural mix, and literature. This book introduces the major writers across two centuries, places them in historical contexts of political and social change, and provides a glossary of local usages and a list of reference materials.

Subhas Chandra Bose's "discovery of India", unlike Jawaharlal Nehru"s, occurred very early in life, when he was barely in his teens. "How many selfless sons of the Mother are prepared, in this selfish age," the fifteen-year-old Subhas asked his mother in 1912, "to completely give up their personal interests and take the plunge for the Mother? Mother, is this son of yours yet ready?" As he stood on the verge of taking the plunge by resigning from the Indian Civil Service in 1921, he wrote to his elder brother Sarat: "Only on the soil of sacrifice and suffering can we raise our national edifice." In December 1937 Bose wrote ten chapters of his autobiography, providing a narrative of his life until 1921 and a reflective chapter entitled "My Faith-Philosophical". The autobiography is complemented with a fascinating collection of seventy letters of Bose's childhood, adolescence and youth. It is not often that remembrances written later in life can be read together with primary source materials of the earlier, formative phases. This volume thus supplies the material with which to study the influences – religious, cultural, moral, intellectual and political – that moulded the character and personality of the revolutionary leader of India's freedom struggle.

During the classical period, aesthetics was an inward-facing field, not concerned with the socioeconomic reality of everyday life. However, art has always flourished across societies as a direct product of the very realities of caste, class, and gender that aesthetics long ignored. As a result, aesthetics as a keyword in the humanities stands at a crossroads today. Eschewing definitions, this volume attempts to explore what aesthetics can be, to deploy the dissipation of classical aesthetics into a reconstituted toolkit of critical terms—anger, shock, beauty, form, praxis, affect.

This volume is a comprehensive introduction to the field of life writing. What makes life writing so popular and important today is its interdisciplinarity and preoccupation with identity politics, crossing the disciplinary borders of literature, history, anthropology, sociology and psychology. The volume traces the history and evolution of the genre since antiquity and discusses its various forms such as autobiographies, biographies, diaries, interviews, digital narratives, popular ballads, as-told-to narratives and folk narratives transmitted through anecdotes or through institutional records, and non-literary forms such as biopics and documentaries.

A Short History of African American Literature is a concise introduction to a multifaceted body of writing engaging with slavery, racism and the idea of racial difference. Foregrounding the contemporary trend of understanding literature against its socio-historical background, this volume tracks the evolution of African American literature from the arrival of the first slaving ships in North America across the Atlantic in the seventeenth century. It highlights the unique influences of oral culture, music and performance, among a people long denied education. The volume links the various genres of writing to the brutal experience of slavery and the collective memory of trauma, even as it celebrates the humour and irony that shaped black identity. Detailed timelines with each chapter anchor the writings in specific historical contexts, with extensive discussions of writers and poets in each period underlining the trajectory of this body of literature.

The Man Who Walked Backwards and Other Stories is an anthology of eighteen short stories by S. Ramakrishnan, the popular and critically acclaimed master of modern Tamil writing. The stories in this collection are a celebration of eccentricities: they feature characters who defy conventions, and who listen to their inner selves instead of conforming to familial and societal norms. There is the mother who swims endlessly to escape domesticity and abuse; an exceptional father and husband who leaves on a quest for selfhood; the thief who heals dogs and trees; the government clerk who goes around town counting pigeons; the man who walks only backwards; the estate-owner who builds a house with a hundred windows on a hilltop, but not for anyone to live in; the father and the son who measure rain; the forgotten poet who is despised by his own family; and many others whom the world does not understand.

Between his resignation as Congress President in Calcutta on 29 April 1939 and his escape from his Elgin Road home on the night of 16-17 January 1941, Subhas Chandra Bose provided India with an alternative leadership in place of the old guard represented by the Gandhian High Command. His alternative was based on a commitment to anti-imperialism and future socialism. This volume brings together the writings and speeches of a crucial phase in Bose's political life immediately prior to his emergence as the Netaji of lndia's army of liberation.

History seems to stand still in Bengal, a province which once played a pioneering role in the nineteenth-century social reform movement. For over a century now, in spite of the drastic politico-economic changes and social upheavals that Bengal has witnessed, important indicators of women’s well-being continue to display alarming trends in the region. Colonial censuses as well as recent data indicate low work participation rates of women, along with very high incidences of underage marriage and widowhood in agrarian Bengal—higher than most other parts of India. The study of marriage practices in India has hitherto been relegated to the realm of culture, whereas work is viewed as an economic issue and rarely studied in relation to marriage. Adopting a new approach, Wives and Widows at Work links these diverging critical concerns and explores the possible relationship between women’s productive labour in a rice-cultivating small-peasant economy like rural Bengal on the one hand, and women’s wifedom/widowhood on the other.

This volume brings together scholarly explorations of the idea and practice of modernity, focusing on gendered archives of modernity from Kerala. The essays in this volume investigate marginalised, unexplored and less discernible gendered narratives. They draw upon archival material that ranges from some of the earliest textual iterations of gender since Kerala’s initial engagements with modernity, to its various contemporary digital representations. The volume engages with a range of questions including literary, cultural and digital discourses around women’s clothes, body, menstruation, education, vocation, writing, caste identities and everyday practices.

The trauma of Partition is an indelible part of the collective memory of the citizens of India and Pakistan and, later, Bangladesh. With over 15 million displaced and several million dead on both sides of the Radcliffe Line, this massive exodus remains forever a black mark in history. Partition and its aftermath have been central to much of subcontinental cinema, and found frequent and varied representation on screen. Tear-Drenched Earth looks at landmark films from the 1950s to the 2010s that depict aspects of the Partition, such as Gandhi, Chinnamul, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Viceroy’s House, Tamas, Garm Hawa, Pinjar and Toba Tek Singh.Focusing on films that highlight the tragic absurdity of a historic catastrophe unprecedented in scale and devastation, and the unimaginable horror of its consequences, John W. Hood studies the ways in which it affected lives on both sides of the divide. He examines the ideas of nation, self, faith, identity, family, love, home and memory in the wake of Partition, and shows how religion and politics are inextricably linked and how they shaped Partition violence. He also reflects on how the newly-drawn borders of the newborn nations created and reinforced notions of the Other that fostered a blind lust for revenge and mindless violence which continued long after Partition, as witnessed in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the 2002 Godhra massacre.

Bengal was the primary centre of East-West interaction and the first region in India to be influenced by and resonate with British culture during colonial times. Explorations in Colonial Bengal sheds light on some important, yet relatively less-explored aspects of sociocultural changes that took place in Bengal in the colonial milieu. The essays engage with two major themes: Vaishnavism, and the society and culture of nineteenth and twentieth-century Bengal. The contributing authors show how Vaishnavism attracted the attention of multiple ethnic communities and institutions in contemporary society. They also study relatively unknown aspects of this culture, such as the role of women in the evolution of Bengali Vaishnava traditions. The second section addresses the society, economy, and politics of colonial Bengal and explores subjects as diverse as the close connection between history and literature; Tagore’s concepts of nationalism and his liberal humanism.

The discipline of education in India has developed over 150 years, beginning in the colonial period, when the British government established the first schools in the Presidencies that responded to the growth of the discipline in the West. Following Independence, the discipline’s growth has been shaped in response to education policies of successive governments, which has changed the direction of the discipline of education as a field of scholarship and practice. Education, Teaching, and Learning brings together leading teachers, researchers, and practitioners in the field of education, whose work represent instances of significant departures in the discipline of Education in India over the last thirty years. The chapters focus on two core practices that define the discipline of education in the university: the practice of preparing teachers, and educational research as social inquiry.
