"A clearly articulated manifesto for those trying to preserve Tokyo’s emergent properties, Emergent Tokyo helps distil lessons for other cities"—Benjamin Bansal, Urban Studies JournalThis book examines the urban fabric of contemporary Tokyo as a valuable demonstration of permeable, inclusive, and adaptive urban patterns that required neither extensive master planning nor corporate urbanism to develop. These urban patterns are emergent: that is, they are the combined result of numerous modifications and appropriations of space by small agents interacting within a broader socio-economic ecosystem. Together, they create a degree of urban intensity and liveliness that is the envy of the world's cities. This book examines five of these patterns that appear conspicuously throughout Tokyo: yokocho alleyways, multi-tenant zakkyo buildings, undertrack infills, low-rise dense neighbourhoods, and the river-like ankyo streets. Unlike many of the discussions on Tokyo that emphasise cultural uniqueness, this book aims at transcultural validity, with a focus on empirical analysis of the spatial and social conditions that allow these patterns to emerge. The authors of Emergent Tokyo acknowledge the distinct character of Tokyo without essentialising or fetishising it, offering visitors, architects, and urban policy practitioners an unparalleled understanding of Tokyo's urban landscape.

Over the past two decades, Mark Cavagnero Associates has been quietly making an imprint on San Francisco’s urban fabric. Born of the Modernist tradition of clean lines, abundant natural light, and functional, flowing open space plans, the firm’s work expands on these values, encompassing a deep understanding of the city and Bay Area. Mark Cavagnero Architect surveys 15 of the firm’s foundational projects, ranging from cultural and civic buildings to recreational and educational facilities. Across this collection unfolds the development of a distinct design language that is at once remarkably consistent and refreshingly new with each individual project. The principles of interlocking volumes, a limited palette of wood and concrete, lightness, authenticity, and presence are applied and varied per the unique demands of client, community, and context. The resulting body of work is not based on style but on substantive thought.

This is a book about contemporary Swedish landscape architecture, reflected through the work of the country's leading landscape designer Thorbjörn Andersson. Three essays by international writers open the book, elaborating on the concepts of Nature, Site, and Restraint. The essays are followed by the project section, including photographs, drawings, and descriptions. The projects are in the public realm; mainly squares and parks in Sweden. Swedish landscape architecture stands firm in the world, directed towards social use and careful design. Sweden has developed a tradition built on human values, selective design, and an urge to work in a resourceful way. The book covers a selection of recent projects by Thorbjörn Andersson, who is one main interpreter of contemporary Swedish landscape design. Essays are by Annemarie Lund of Denmark, critic, editor and author, Marc Treib, professor emeritus of UC Berkeley and prolific author, and Udo Weilacher, chair of Landscape department at TU Munich and author.

Sensitively balancing historic preservation with contemporary innovation, Ahearn's timeless houses feel deeply connected to the stylistic character of their locales, even as their programs and plans celebrate how we live now. In these pages, Ahearn takes us on a journey through the award-winning private residences and public environments that he has created over his 45-year career. He entertainingly explains how his uniquely urbanistic point of view and novel, narrative-driven process help clients live out their dreams, in homes that recall the past, engage with the present, and look to the future.

Reimagining Environmental Identity by Ping Jiang presents a compelling exploration of architectural practice designed to navigate the dynamic urban landscapes of China and beyond. The book showcases 19 diverse projects from Jiang’s studio, reflecting a novel approach to architecture that engages deeply with social, cultural, technological, and environmental issues. Rather than adhering to conventional architectural norms, Jiang's practice emphasises the creation of meaningful, context-sensitive designs that foster a profound connection between people and their environment. Through a range of projects, from high-rise buildings to urban interventions and civic structures, the monograph highlights a non-linear design process that blends spatial experience with cultural relevance and environmental sensitivity. It underscores the importance of forging a unique sense of place and identity in architecture, advocating for designs that resonate with both local and global contexts. This collection offers insights into how contemporary architecture can address the complexities of urban life while preserving and enhancing cultural and environmental values.

This impressive book is richly illustrated with 91 gorgeous macro photographs — of flowers, and also some of their pollinators — by John Rodrigues, an artist who has taken that time to truly see. We invite you to sit back, maybe with a cup of hot Chamomile tea, and indulge in these images — taking the time to truly see these flowers, and to appreciate their inherent majesty. John Rodrigues takes an old lens and new camera and gives us a new look at an old photographic subject.

What is the secret to architecture that feels truly comfortable? Architecture of Life is the first essay collection distilling three decades of groundbreaking work from the architectural duo behind the iconic Fuji Kindergarten and Roof House. Moving beyond mere blueprints, this book explores a radical philosophy: buildings are not static objects, but dynamic organisms that breathe, weather, and evolve. The authors challenge the modern obsession with sterile, climate-controlled isolation, proposing instead a return to creating "architecture of life". Through world-renowned projects, they demonstrate how environments can foster freedom, dignity, and joy. Drawing on "open monism" and Zen concepts like ensō, these essays reveal how architecture can bridge the gap between humans and ecosystems and how the authors create "generative fields" where life can truly unfold by embracing risk and nature. Part personal narrative and part philosophical meditation, this book is an essential call to rethink our built environment as an act of trust—reminding us that the most meaningful spaces are those that allow us to feel the world again.

Growing up, almost every kid dreams of finding buried treasure. That dream slowly fades with age as they realise that Blackbeard never visited their backyard. For some, the search for treasure continues in their adult lives in other ways. Metal detectors and shovels may be replaced with online searches and library visits, but the thrill of the hunt is still alive, ever driving the quest forward.Lost Danish Treasure tells the tale of two stories: 1) the history of Finn Juhl’s iconic Chieftain Chair and a long-forgotten painting that preceded it, and 2) the individual connections to this design by a small group of collector researchers. Although starting in different eras and timelines, the two accounts start to intertwine over the course of the book, with the research efforts of today helping to unravel the mysteries of the past. As each chapter unfolds, more and more clues are revealed that slowly weave the storylines closer together— until the summer of 2021, when both accounts collided after Lot 242 popped up in an auction house in Chicago. The result of the subsequent analysis sheds new light about the origins and identity of the very first Chieftain Chair.

To be a skateboarder today is a much different experience than it was for much of the 1990s. The photographs, quotes, and anecdotal text in '93 til captures a time in skateboarding when making a liveable income as a professional skater was a luxury and public understanding of skateboarding was at an all-time low. It was a time when skateboarding was searching for an identity, a time before Instagram and big corporate influences. Street skating was coming of age, testing its limitations and aligning itself with a new and innovative style of hip-hop culture that was emerging. Looking back, many skaters today feel as though the '90s were the golden years of skateboarding. '93 til is a captivating portal into a decade and a culture that is remembered with warmth and nostalgia. Much of the photography that Pete has unearthed for '93 til was buried in boxes for close to two decades and has never been seen or published before. The 250-page book also contains several timeless images from his years shooting for SLAP and Transworld Skateboarding Magazine that will be familiar to the initiated. In addition to his stunning action shots are plenty of portraits and unguarded, candid moments that span from the late '80s up through 2004. The book reveals a raw, unapologetic perspective of a world that no longer exists. Also included in the book alongside Pete's imagery are quotes and anecdotes from legends like Tony Hawk, Arto Saari, Jamie Thomas, Guy Mariano, Nyjah Huston, Geoff Rowley, Stevie Williams and others.

This is a clear, accurate, readable survey of the dramatic transformation of Chinese architecture from 1840 through 2020. It narrates the change from a predominantly timber-frame tradition to construction in twisted steel and ecologically sensitive local materials. The book places the buildings in historical context. Modern Chinese Architecture: 180 Years tells the dramatic story of the transformation of Chinese architecture from a predominantly modular, timber-frame, single-story building system with ceramic tile roofs of anonymous, local craftsmen to skyscrapers designed by internationally acclaimed architects, from temple markets and itinerant peddlers to megamalls, and from open air stages to auditoriums and stadiums with cutting-edge acoustics. The architectural transformation occurs as China transforms from a dynasty ruled by emperors to a republic to a people’s republic, from a country in which fewer than half the male population, and perhaps 10 percent of the female population could read to at least 97% literacy, and from a population that was fewer than 5 percent to more than 60 percent urban. The development of architecture in China is explained century-by-century through five generations of architects: foreigners, China’s first generation who study modern architecture abroad, their students who design in China during years of war with Japan, internal warfare, and the Cultural Revolution, the next generation who in the 1980s begin to study abroad again, and designers of this century from every continent who compete to transform the Chinese landscape. The buildings in this book come from every province.

On October 3, 2003, the Liberty Bell Center, the new home of the Liberty Bell, was opened to the public. The building, designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, is one of the highlights of Philadelphia s reconfigured Independence Mall. This book offers a close look at the building. It presents an extensive set of reproductions and photographs, including records of the design and building process, that thoroughly document the building and its surroundings. The book also features essays that flesh out the building's rich context and its historical background. They include insiders accounts of the design process as well as critical maps of the constellation of forces that come into play in shaping a building of this significance and quality.

Best known for designing a wide variety of commercial spaces for Marc Jacobs, Stephan Jaklitsch seeks to explore the poetry of architecture through the manipulation of space and light to create rigorously detailed spaces that convey a sense of meaning and purpose to their respective contexts. Organized in a rough chronological sequence, the projects in Jaklitsch's Habits, Patterns, Algorithms range in scale from small interior-oriented retail constructions and free-standing residential work, which engages the surrounding landscape, to larger urban transformations both built and speculative. The primary focus is on the process of the design and construction of each work as well as the strict limitations presented by programme, site, code, or client conditions. Each project is presented with detailed drawings, sketches, models, and photographs.

The work of the award-winning architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson ranges greatly in scale and circumstance from private homes, large and small, to major university, public and cultural buildings. The nineteen projects featured celebrate this diversity and include the elegant retail stores for Apple in New York City, the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia, the Ballard Library in Seattle, the headquarters for Pixar Animation Studios in California and several extraordinary private residences in North America. The practice's architecture is alive to the subtleties of place, both man-made and natural, to the varied natures of people, to the sensibilities of individuals, to the character of institutions and to the rich possibilities of materials and the means of construction. Each project is extensively depicted in new colour photography, evocative conceptual sketches, presentation drawings, and construction details. A foreword by Pritzker Prize winner Glenn Murcutt and essays by a select group of this country's most accomplished architects and writers accompany this handsome volume.

Curtis Fentress is an internationally known architect who passionately pursues the creation of sustainable and iconic public architecture. Fentress portfolio of award-winning designs includes world-class airports, museums, convention centers, courthouses, civic buildings, laboratories, higher education facilities, and office towers.

Many think slavery ended with the demise of the trans-Atlantic trade, but sadly, that's far from true. An estimated thirty-six million live without dignity or rights and although slavery is illegal in every country, it continues to persist in all - as a crime against humanity. Lisa Kristine's indelible images seek to unify humanity and inform the viewer of the tangible humanness of individuals enslaved today. Lisa was invited to the Vatican as a witness to the signing of the Declaration to Eradicate Modern Day Slavery by 2020. When Pope Francis gathered twenty-five of the world's distinguished faith leaders the message was clear - slavery is not a political issue - it is a crime against humanity, against all people. Lisa's journey sheds light on the need for a global shift from dependence on slave labour, to fair trade labour systems available and active in many parts of the world today. It is not simply a story about slavery, but liberation. In order to create change, we must first visualise what is required to free those enslaved today.Bound to Freedom focuses on inspiring us to engage in the reality of slavery - to make us aware of the depth of its reach and insist we begin to look for solutions across faiths, communities, and the world. The call is for a renewed commitment to cooperate and to empower those enslaved to be seen.

Shanghai Tower tells the compelling story of the making of China's tallest building, the 632-metre-tall centrepiece of the city's Lujiazui commercial district. This visually driven volume captures the emotion and spirit of a tower that is transformative in nature, setting new precedents for how public spaces can be integrated throughout supertall buildings. In the tower, designed by the Gensler design firm, references to nature and Chinese cultural traditions are fused and recast vertically in a form inspired by the traditional lane houses that are unique to Shanghai. Brief essays by company founder Art Gensler and principals Jun Xia, Xiaomei Lee, and Dan Winey provide meaningful context to the tower, the commission for which was won in an international design competition.Text in English and Chinese.

Close to one million people are unhoused in the United States today. Millions and millions are ill—housed - people living in shanties or leaky, mouldy trailers. And millions more are mis—housed - in houses that are abusive in their loneliness, forlorn and empty at so many levels. We can do something about it. Actually, it’s low hanging fruit, should we choose to do something; impossible, if we do not. And it’s essential, not only for the wellbeing of the individual, but also for the wellbeing of the State, and the society.Current studies are overwhelmingly show that it is more cost effective, in terms of tax dollars earmarked for city, county, state, and federal governments, to house people than it is to just leave them outside. About $20k to $40k cheaper for each person per year. In the case of the unhoused, it also taxes our psyches and our emotions to see our neighbours sleeping on the sidewalk. It is difficult, if not impossible, to explain to our children and grandchildren how we Americans leave people outside in the cold — mentally challenged or not. Then, there is the moral issue. If you are motivated to get a new homeless housing project moving in your town, this book is the best place to start.

Chapter 1: Urban Play: A Project from Start to Finish: What does a landscape architect do exactly? Here, we peel back the finished project, which has won several design awards, to show the major steps in the making of the garden. We start with the clients wishes for an outside play area for their young twin girls that will be visually pleasing when viewed from the living rooms several stories above. And the condition of the site: an odd-shaped and impossibly steep and tilted small plot covered in brambles. We present a 'before' picture, early drawings, problem solving, the gradual articulation of the design, how the Blasens work together, choice of fabrication materials, planting design, the construction period, and the final finished garden and how it is used. Illustrations throughout.Chapter 2: Gardens: From the Mountains to the Shore: This photographic presentation of a dozen gardens is the bulk of the book. Some projects are covered in 2 spreads; others in 3 spreads, one in 5 spreads. The gardens range from a city courtyard to a beach garden, to an 22-acre estate with a California wildflower meadow, and an extensive green roof on a Herzog & de Meuron designed house that s set into a natural hillside. Some have been published in top design magazines; a few particularly exciting new large projects are now being published for the first time. Each project is introduced with a) descriptions of the garden and how the clients use it and b) a paragraph about the planting design and key plants.Chapter 3: Lexicon: The Blasens Aesthetic: This chapter-an alphabetical list of terms/phrases that appear often in the Blasens conversations about their work investigates the Blasens aesthetic. We hear what they most deeply care about, often in their own words: for example, seamlessness of design, color, geography, lightness, plants that thrive where they are, rhythmic sequencing of experiences in a garden, retaining what already is. And also their influences in the art, design, and architecture worlds, and what's catching their attention right now. This collage of fragments builds a fascinating picture of their sensibilities, and how they earned the title of the new tastemakers in House and Garden magazine. Small photographs, for many entries, give examples.

This book, the first monograph on Leonardo Ricci’s oeuvre, uses archive materials, some of which have never been published, to investigate the entire range of Ricci’s work, by examining some of his most interesting projects and putting them into the context of the current architectural panorama. His professional activity in the passionate climate of post-war reconstruction in Italy, his communitarian projects and experimental family residences, his book Anonymous (20th Century) in which he defined with an “existentialist” approach his theories of painting, architecture, and urban planning, his visionary projects for “Earth-City” macrostructures, his innovative approach to the spatial organisation of public institutions in his last projects, every step of Ricci’s work was always coherently connected to a basic aim: to translate into an architectural form the dynamism of phenomena and the incessant flow of life. The book investigates Leonardo Ricci’s practical and theoretical approach to architectural design, giving this exceptional figure the recognition he deserves within the panorama of Italian and international architecture following the Second World War.

Did you know Po Po (paw-paw) means grandma in Chinese? Did you know Filipino settlers were the first Asian American community? When Po Po knits, she shares parts of American history that are not often told. As her young granddaughter listens with admiration, Po Po talks about Asian Americans and how their resilience has helped shape the strength and beauty of the United States of America. In this inspiring picture book, Po Po brings to light the hardships and discrimination that many endured in eight events that took place in American history. Accompanied by rich and colourful illustrations inspired by historical photography, Po Po wants her young granddaughter to know that not only have Asian Americans lived in the United States for centuries, but the different types of people are what make the nation unique and extraordinary. Each story has a special message and embraces the Chinese language — emphasising that America is a culture of many cultures.

Today, designers, researchers, and scholars must responsibly engage the entangled networks and delineated systems far beyond boundaries of typical design practice to engage in thoughtful critique of the past and consider counter-imaginations of the future. Our discussion of the unseen begins first with an understanding of the power of sight. A look back at the technologies of control implicated in documenting the world reveals the closely intertwined evolution of imperial occupation and technological progress. Constructing Invisibility continues the exchanges initiated during the first symposium and builds upon the diversity of knowledge shared. The late French philosopher Bruno Latour reminds us that “politics has always been oriented toward objects, stakes, situations, material entities, bodies, landscapes, places. This is in effect the decisive discovery of political ecology: it is an object-oriented politics. Change the territories and you will also change the attitudes.” This issue uses these economies, landscapes, and places, including the boundless corporations and destructive climate realities, to better see the world. Further, the collection of essays seeks to understand how the construction of such sight impacts civilian occupation in the remaining world. Illuminating stories and places has become the aim of this volume, and shedding light on distant territories has become confounded by extremity, complexity, disparity, and secrecy.

A boxed set in four volumes, each volume in the series represents a core sample of the firm FXFOWLE at this moment in time, highlighting a grouping of four major projects that share a common theme but not necessarily the same typology or program. The themes are threads that weave the work together and as a whole define the design philosophy of the firm. The firm's emphasis on sustainability is a current that runs through the narrative of each book. Each book focuses on design process and collaboration. Each project is presented in depth and will underscore the methodology, aesthetics, techniques and ethos of the firm. With future volumes planned, these sets will track the progression of ideas that evolve over time through the work that enacts the ideas, and informs the work to come.REVEAL exposes the territory between architecture and landscape. Buildings and urban plans appaly an ecological approach, merging with the larger structures of the environment. Architecture and constructed systems resonate with natural systems, bringing the experience of landscape to designed space.FILTER refines the association between architecture and context. Vernacular structures and distinctive local customs provide a frame of reference for the generation of form. Incorporating culture and climate infuses buildings with a sense of place and develops a close bond with the natural environment.EVOLVE advances the bond bewteen architecture and history. Remaking historic buildings and districts engages culture, heritage, and conservation along with architecture and planning. Materials, methods, and expression foster respect, authenticity, and interconnectivity in buildings old and new.EFFECT realises the raltionship between architecture and program. The function and use of a building offer a powerful concept tool that may be interpreted and inflected. Crafted alongside the tangible components of a building, the intangible aspects of program enhance form and function.

John Dixon Hunt introduces PWP Landscape Architecture: Building Ideas with a discussion of how we read landscapes and, hence, how they are designed with the reader/client in mind and the historical implications of such efforts. Peter Walker, Gary Hilderbrand, and Gina Crandell trace the history of Peter Walker's various firms from the 1950s until 2000, and Jane Gillette discusses some recent projects in terms of using consultants to further design ideas. Twelve finished projects, seven works in progress, and three competitions, from roughly 2000 to 2015, demonstrate the firm's goals and achievements with an emphasis on the expansion of landscape architecture from the surrounds of buildings to self-sufficient entities that express the highest accomplishments of both ecological function and design.

The original impetus behind this project was the desire to document the extraordinary richness, variety, and quality of Havana’s Art Deco’ architecture. Looking back at these photographs, photographer Duccio Malagamba is still glad he made the decision to undertake that adventure, despite the fact that the result of that effort, due to a series of circumstances, lay dormant for decades in a drawer in his studio. There is no doubt that, the documentary value of the photographs remains intact—or perhaps increased, since it is possible that over these 30 years some of the works portrayed have succumbed to successive cyclones and lack of maintenance. The valuable aesthetic and compositional charge of the images does not seem to have been compromised by the passage of time. Today, however, alongside with the worn beauty of the buildings portrayed, what captures the viewer is the life that has been encapsulated in these photographs. A life frozen in most cases accidentally.
