British Landscapes: A Sense of Place explores how artists responded to the landscape of England, Scotland, Wales during the 20th century. Drawn from the remarkable Modern British art collection of Pallant House Gallery, alongside exceptional works on long-term loan from private collections, it features much loved artists including Barbara Hepworth, Clare Leighton, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson, Eric Ravilious, Graham Sutherland and Keith Vaughan.British Landscapes covers a wide range of genres, showcasing a history of 20th century art in Britain: British Post-Impressionism by Spencer Gore and Walter Sickert; a focus on the 1920s printmaking revival of etching and wood-engraving with FL Griggs and Robin Tanner; 1930s travel posters and watercolours by David Jones and Eric Ravilious; an exploration of Surrealism through Paul Nash, John Tunnard and Julian Trevelyan; and wartime landscapes by John Piper, Sutherland and Keith Vaughan. The final section considers the development of abstraction in British art via the St Ives artists and their contemporaries, such as Ivon Hitchens. It explores the concept of placemaking, and how artists have conveyed the spirit or sense of a particular place in their artworks. It not only includes pastoral idylls but also urban, suburban and industrial landscapes. A leitmotif running throughout is the relationship of people to the land: from images of rural labour and farming to the development of leisure tourism. It also considers how the British landscape has been central to the formation of regional and national identities, and how tangentially it can   convey the anxieties of socio-political events, such as the First and Second World Wars. This fully illustrated catalogue is published to accompany the exhibition of the same title at Pallant House Gallery.

The artists Dora Carrington (1893-1932) was a true bohemian. Sir John Rothenstein once described her as 'the most neglected serious painter of her time', but Carrington - who cut her hair short and chose to be known by her surname - was a significant contributor to Modern British art during the interwar years and a vital associate of the Bloomsbury Group.Bringing her artworks together, this book summons up Carrington's whole way of life: loving, creative, domestic and intimate. She was an artist who remained true to her own vision and to the people and places that nourished her.   Distributed for Pallant House Gallery   Exhibition Schedule:  Pallant House Gallery, Chichester(9 November 2024–27 April 2025)

An intimate look at Ben Nicholson's everyday inspirationsThroughout his career, Ben Nicholson (1894–1982) transformed everyday homewares into extraordinary experiments in abstract art. Nicholson’s studio was filled with objects that inspired him. From patterned mocha-ware jugs and cut glass goblets to spanners, hammers and chisels, these ordinary personal possessions were a source of almost endless inspiration to the artist. This book brings together for the first time Nicholson’s paintings, reliefs, prints and drawings alongside his rarely seen personal possessions and studio tools. It traces how the artist’s style developed, from his early traditional tabletop still lifes to his later abstract works. Still life was at the heart of Nicholson’s artistic practice. Through these humble items, he began to experiment with form and color. His early works in particular owed inspiration to his father, the painter William Nicholson. The book traces the artistic and personal influences on Nicholson’s evolutionary still life style from the 1920s to the 1970s. It explores his time with Winifred Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, as well as his encounters with other Modernist greats, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondrian. Distributed for Pallant House Gallery

A fully illustrated publication to accompany the first major presentation of William Nicholson (1872- 1949) in over two decades, spanning the entire career of an extraordinarily versatile and popular artist. Defying categorisation, Nicholson sat both at the heart of the art world and apart from artistic movements of his day. In this book, his spectacular output is considered afresh, from his acclaimed prints and book illustrations to his sensitive portraits of individuals of all ages and from all groups in British society. In unrivalled still lifes to expansive landscapes, Nicholson’s pictures are not simply representations of the visible world or scenes ripe with hidden symbolism; his are paintings of dazzling brushwork and exquisite colours that speak of his delight in the observation of his subjects. Exploring the premise that Nicholson’s work is more complex than previous interpretations have suggested, this publication will position Nicholson’s output as a product of the artist’s times, as revealed by his portrayals of key figures of the British Empire and his close relationship with London’s theatre world.Distributed for Pallant House Gallery

Alfred Wallis: An Artists’ Artist explores the remarkable impact of fisherman and rag-and-bone storekeeper turned painter, Alfred Wallis (1855-1942) on Modern British art. Based in St Ives, Cornwall, where he was first encountered by Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson, Wallis started painting aged 70 despite no formal training, creating bold depictions of the Cornish coast and fishing community that captivated leading contemporary artists. They were struck by his flattening of the picture plane; the representation of landscapes as viewed from above; as well as his particular sense of colour and the wish to record daily life, which was at the heart of Wallis’s practice. The period during which Wallis was painting (1925–1942) and immediately after his death was one of remarkable development in Modern British art; development that Wallis showed little interest in himself, and yet marked so greatly. Wallis’s paintings were admired and collected by many artists: some who knew him - including Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Christopher Wood, Peter Lanyon, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and John Wells – and others who never met him, despite also living in Cornwall, such as his first biographer, Sven Berlin, Patrick Heron, Bernard Leach, and John Walls.Bringing together paintings by Wallis that were owned by these artists, alongside key contemporary works by the artists themselves, the book explores why so many leading artistic figures acquired his work and reveals Wallis’s lasting influence on modernist approaches to perspective, form, colour, composition and lived experience. Ultimately it reveals how his work remained forever inimitable.Distributed for Pallant House Gallery

‘I have waited 30 yrs to see Greece’, Barbara Hepworth wrote while travelling through the Peloponnese and the Aegean and Cycladic islands in August 1954. At a turning point in Hepworth’s life and career, it would have a profound impact, leading her to reflect in 1964: ‘a whole decade later … It is deeply part of my work’ Shaping her thinking and expanding her artistic language, the memory of this transformative journey nourished Hepworth’s practice until the end of her life. Hepworth’s visceral encounter renewed her lifelong exploration of the relationship between the human figure and landscape. The colours, light, elemental forces and sense of space of Greece inspired some of her best-known works, including her extraordinary Guarea wood carvings and her Aegean Suite of lithographs. Beautifully illustrated and published to accompany the exhibition of the same title at Pallant House Gallery, Barbara Hepworth and Greece offers new insight into the work of Britain’s best-known modern artist. This is the first publication dedicated to Hepworth’s deep affinity for Greece – from her early fascination for classical culture, to the revelation she experienced after encountering its landscape, people and ancient art and architecture in 1954, through to the works of Greek inspiration she created in her last two decades.Distributed for Pallant House Gallery

Maggi Hambling has over time responded to the sound of song in her work, consistently capturing it in gold against a black ground—to date her diverse subjects have included the singers Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, P J Harvey, and Will Young. More recently, and following a night spent in the Sussex wilderness in the company of folk singer Sam Lee listening to the song of the nightingale, the artist embarked on a new series of paintings, capturing the song of this small migratory songbird.  James Cahill’s text places Hambling’s striking new nightingale series in context and considers the long history of the nightingale, which has been celebrated by writers, poets, artists and musicians for thousands of years.  Distributed for Pallant House Gallery

Historically, still life has been viewed as the lowest genre of art, but in fact it has been employed by leading British artists to grapple with some of the most profound themes relating to the human condition, and as a vehicle for artistic experimentation with new forms and ideas. The Shape of Things shows how in the early 20th century British artists renewed the traditional genre of still life for the modern age, a spirit of experimentation with the genre that continues today. Showing how the genre sits at the heart of different artistic movements in Modern British art including the Seven & Five Society, Unit One, the British Surrealist Group, St Ives and post-war abstraction, Neo-Romanticism, pop art, conceptual art and post-war figurative art, and YBAs, it presents a history of British art as understood through the lens of the still life. Other themes which will be touched on include identity, migration, consumerism, existentialism, and climate change, themes that are eminently relevant to contemporary audiences.Featuring texts from contributors including Simon Martin, Lydia Miller, Miriam O'Connor Perks, Melanie Vandenbrouck, Phoebe Cummins, Michael Bird, Emma Sharples and Chloe Nahum.   Exhibition Schedule:Pallant House Gallery, Chichester(11 May - 20 October 2024)
