First complete edition of an invaluable and extensive collection of medieval documents.with contributions from Neil Bettridge, Jean Cameron, Paul Cavill and Teresa Webber. The White Book of Southwell derives its name from its white vellum cover. Compiled between c.1350 and 1460, with a few later additions, its 500 pages record 620 individual documents from c.1100 onwards. They range widely from papal bulls and royal charters, quo warranto inquiries, privileges granted by many archbishops of York to the Chapter at Southwell, individual canons (or prebendaries) and the parishes where the Minster held lands or controlled livings. The majority date from c.1200-1460 and concern properties which the Chapter owned and administered through its courts, for which some rare proceedings are preserved. Because of their variety, the documents it contains are important not simply for ecclesiastical history but for broader social and economic trends in medieval Nottinghamshire either side of the Black Death. The volume also furnishes a remarkable amount of little-studied onomastic and linguistic evidence in medieval Latin, Anglo-Norman French and Middle English as well as strong traces of earlier Anglo-Scandinavianinfluences on Nottinghamshire.First brought to attention by the pioneering county historian Robert Thoroton (d. 1677), the White Book has been consulted in all subsequent generations. However, while some of its contents havebeen published in their original language or in translation, this is the first systematic, complete scholarly edition. A substantial introduction sets the White Book in context, describing its structure and content. Extensive commentary helps to date many undated individual documents and identify persons and places named, a detailed Fasti provides details on the personnel of the Minster and its appendant churches, while detailed indexes assist consultation.

The pipe roll for Michaelmas 1226 is particularly informative as it preserves the accounts for no fewer than twenty-nine English shrievalties, allowing us to analyse the collection of royal revenues in fascinating detail. This volume is the first edition of the Latin pipe roll for 10 Henry III (Michaelmas 1226). It will be invaluable for historians of the reign of King Henry III and for historians interested in medieval royal finance and administration. It is a particularly detailed roll, which preserves the accounts for no fewer than twenty-nine English shrievalties, with only Rutland and Westmorland missing. In addition to these, this pipe roll includes a number of other accounts, including those of Thomas of Cirencester for the earl of Devon's lands and the king's manors in Devon, which will be useful to local historians. Although no new scutages were levied in this accounting year, this pipe roll shows that arrears were still coming in from those of Montgomery (1223) and Bedford (1224), with some particularly detailed entries relating to the honours of Boulogne and Wallingford. The contents of this roll also allow historians interested in taxation and royal revenues to trace the collection of the fifteenth on moveable property, which had been proposed in return for the re-issue of Magna Carta in 1225. There is, similarly, interesting information relating to the business of Hugh de Neville's forest eyre of 1224-5 for Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire, Worcestershire and Dorset, offering insights into the implementation of the Forest Charter. The contents of this pipe roll also assist in studying the royal exchequer's continued attempts to recover large, outstanding debts from barons, such as Warin de Munchensy, via a policy of consolidation and attermination. Other business of potential interest to a range of scholars is covered in the pipe roll for 10 Henry III. The staffing and maintenance of royal castles are mentioned regularly, and the roll's contents provide important information about the keepers of royal castles in different counties, payments for crossbowmen in particular locations, details relating to knight service and payments for repairs to castles, such as Bedford which figured in Fawkes de Bréauté's revolt of 1224, and for building works at the Tower of London. Included among other business outlined in this pipe roll are details of the money and equipment transported to Portsmouth and Portchester for despatch to Gascony for the use of Richard, Henry III's brother, who had recently been created count of Poitou, and for the defence of Gascony against Louis VIII.

Newly edited documents and commentaries published in honour of one of our foremost historians of English medieval political society Different from most festschriften, this wide-ranging volume brings together a rich collection of newly edited documents accompanied by commentaries which both set them in context and highlight their importance for historians of medieval England. The volume will be published jointly with the Pipe Roll Society, and the distinguished team of contributors will include both friends and former pupils of the honorand.

Critical insights into the period of baronial reform and rebellion in England (1258-67) and the evolution of parliament. This new edition of the 1259 pipe roll sees the Pipe Roll Society returning to its roots by publishing the financial records of the English crown. The decision to publish this particular roll reflects the importance of the year 1259 in English constitutional and political history, at a critical juncture in the period of baronial reform and rebellion in England (1258-67) and the evolution of parliament. In 1258, a group of baronial reformers had imposed a council of fifteen on the king and attempted to regulate the workings of royal government and correct the misgovernment of both the centre and the localities. The contents of this pipe roll cover the first full year of the operation of this baronial government. It contains accounts for most of the counties of England and offers valuable insights into government finance and how royal administration productively functioned during this period. In particular, it provides detailed information about the sources of royal revenues and how these revenues were spent in the counties. The information within the roll, and within its ancillary records, sheds new light on the relationship between the central government and the sheriffs, the crown's chief local agents, which had been radically altered in 1258,with the appointment of new sheriffs by the reforming council as custodians, who were expected to account for the traditional income from the counties. Dr Cassidy's analysis of the pipe roll, analysed in the introduction to his new edition, demonstrates that the reformers' efforts to control the financial administration and reform Exchequer procedures met with success, in the beginning.

This is a critical edition of the charters and other documents of the Hommet family, who were constables of Normandy and leading barons under the Angevin kings of England and Capetian kings of France. It is the first major edition of the acts of a Norman baronial dynasty, with numerous records concerning 13 counties in eastern and southern England as well. It contains 450 deeds issued by 35 men and 19 women from the Hommet dynasty and their predecessors from the families of Say, Remilly, and Aunay, and appendices with 48 related documents. The collection reveals the roots of aristocratic power in the Anglo-Norman realm and early Capetian Normandy, including economic assets, judicial rights, fiscal exactions, and ties of loyalty. It also provides crucial evidence for the differing fates of the dynasty's four branches during and after the collapse of the Anglo-Norman realm under King John, and it casts an important light upon the division of the Anglo-Norman aristocracy after 1204.

A key point of reference for all political and social historians of twelfth-century England.Early in 1166, Henry II sent out orders via his sheriffs to all his tenants-in-chief, instructing them to send him returns (subsequently referred to as the cartae baronum) that listed the number of knights enfeoffed upon their estates in 1135 (when Henry I died); the number of knights they had enfeoffed since 1135; how many knights were charged on their demesne; and the names of their knightly tenants. The returns submitted by his tenants-in-chief are therefore indispensable records for the nature of tenurial lordship as it operated under King Henry II. The cartae were instrumental in their own day in confirming ligeance from rear tenants, and providing up-to-date lists of honorial knights from whom the king might collect such feudal incidents (wardships and reliefs as well as scutages and aids) as fell during a period of royal custody. They also laid the groundwork for a possible revision ofknightly quotas owing to the crown. Due to the sheer level of detail within the returns, they are also a key source for those scholars who are interested in tracing the histories of individual honors and identifying comital, baronial and knightly landholders in twelfth-century England. This important volume brings together all the extant cartae baronum for the first time. In addition to these, there are notices, mostly from the early thirteenthcentury, of those cartae which are now lost. Each individual cartae here is accompanied by a detailed note that identifies the individual tenant in chief, briefly discusses the history of his barony or holding, anddefines the nature of his obligations to the crown under Henry II. The editor has also corrected a number of long-established textual errors, and identified as many subtenants as possible and located their toponyms. NEIL STACY gained his DPhil from Oxford. His publications include books on the estates of the abbeys of Glastonbury and Shaftesbury.
