The book takes another look at the trials of Oscar Slater, Jessie McLachlan, Edward William Pritchard and Madeleine Smith. Slater's trial ended up in him being wrongly convicted of the murder of Marion Gilchrist in her west end home in 1908.The case has become the most famous miscarriage of justice in Scottish legal history and he was only 2 days from being hanged when he was reprieved. After spending nearly 20 years in prison, he was released and attended the first case in the newly established Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh - his own. Slater received compensation for his wrongful imprisonment before settling in a seaside Scottish town. Jessie McLachlan was also wrongly convicted of murder and she was similarly condemned to die at the end of a rope. Once again, public pressure halted the execution. She served 15 years in prison before she was freed. Edward William Pritchard was the last to be publicly hanged in the city in 1865. Madeleine Smith received a verdict of not proven at the end of her trial in 1857. That verdict is unique to Scotland and the case is still argued over to this day. Yet, had a witness not been abroad at the time of the trial, the outcome would have been different and she could have been hanged.

Two brothers were convicted of the murder of a neighbour and sentenced to hang. That was the sentence imposed despite the fact that only one had delivered the fatal blow, because in law both were acting together and responsible for the actions of the other. Whilst two men were sentenced to die for one man, the powers that be demanded one life in return, so one of them was allowed to live.Thereafter only one brother was hanged with the other serving a life sentence in prison. That brother lived until he was 65, ending his days in a homeless unit in Glasgow. In those days domestic abuse was not recognised and went largely unpunished unless someone chose to step in on behalf of the battered wife. Against that background, the story explores what led to the fatal attack and only one of the brothers suffering capital punishment. The story describes the family and the effect it had on the daughter of the family involved. It happens that the man who stepped up was frightened of the husband of the battered woman, so called for help from the brothers and others.

As a committed feminist, Carol Fox has achieved success for many women, but her greatest battle described in this book was very personal. Following serious fertility problems, Carol made the positive decision to become a single parent by choice, to have a child while she still could. Refused access to fertility treatment in Scotland she had no choice but to move to London. Through sheer determination and tenacity, Carol obtained treatment in England in the early 1990s and her daughter was born in 1992, following extensive fertility treatment and battles against judgemental attitudes which appear almost vindictive to us 25 years later. Her story attracted media attention, sparking debates on motherhood and the right to be a single parent in the UK. Written as a memoir addressed to her only daughter, the story continues to be of interest to a wider audience of women, young and old, mothers and non-mothers, as the chapters record the changing social attitudes towards single parents during the last 35 years.

Cuddies Strip follows the investigation and trial of a true crime, but it also examines the treatment of women in a male-dominated society. It is an absorbing period piece from 1930s Scotland, but with strong contemporary resonances about the nature and responsiveness of police services and the ingrained misogyny of the criminal justice system.
