He was a long serving senior police officer and was latterly Deputy Chief Constable & Director of Operations of Lothian and Borders Police. His last role was as Officer in Overall Command of a national investigation into the murders of a number of young women in Scotland, including Edinburgh's World's End Murders. His previous books include The World's End Murders: The Inside Story and the best selling Ruxton:The First Modern Murder and The Bombing of Edinburgh and Leith 1939-42.
