This book has been written for the many believing Christians who from time to time are filled with dismay at the Word of the Lord, and who almost continually feel weary and discouraged in their struggle against sin. Ole Hallesby demands little introduction today. The author of the classic book Prayer (IVP) which has gone into many editions on both sides of the Atlantic, and sold in its tens of thousands, is widely known for his devotional writings. In this companion volume to that book the author provides us with moving and challenging meditations on biblical passages.

A time of plenty when all have enough.... A time when animals and men live in friendship.... A time when there is peace over all the earth.... These are the dreams, not of contemporary youth, but of Jewish writers before the time of Christ. In The King and The Kingdom Professor Barclay traces ideas of the Kingdom of God from the days of Israel's first king to the flowering of those ideas in Christ the King. In his customary energetic manner this popular author shows how relevant today are the concepts emerging from the study of Biblical events.

The Spirit of the Hebrides combines the poetry of Kenneth Steven with the photography of Alastair Jackson and features images of Skye and Raasay in homage to one of Scotland’s leading 20th century poets, Sorley McLean. The Spirit of the Hebrides explores islands as places to be discovered; places which shy away from recognition, yet are in some way familiar. Kenneth Steven’s poetry reflects on the link between people and the land; how identity is shaped by wild places; the passing of many of the old ways of the Hebrides; the enduring beauty of these islands; the hospitality of their people and the depth of their spiritual awareness.Alastair Jackson’s photography captures the wilder and remoter parts of Skye and Raasay, often in bad weather, but showing a glimmer of sunshine and hope on the horizon. His wide horizons and stormy sky offer a glimpse into both the turbulent past and the deep spirituality of the Hebrides. This book uniquely captures the spirit of the Hebrides.*Longlisted for the Highland Book Prize 2019. "The result is a beautiful and evocative book that explores the land and seascapes of these islands, their vast skies and their resilient, shifting beauty in all seasons and weathers" -- Highland Book Prize 2019

A wealth of discussion material on Christian Ethics for Adult Education Groups and others.

How did God’s young Church set out on its mission to ‘make disciples of all nations’? What was God’s challenge to those first members of the Christian faith?Three sections describe the Christian community in its early days; aspects of the Christian life; and outstanding men who travelled and taught in the hostile world of the Roman empire. At the heart of early Christianity were values and beliefs which will never age. Invaluable for individual or group Bible Study, these pages are filled with guidance for daily living.

In 64 short and lively essays, A. M. Hunter offers new and exciting insights into the New Testament.

This first volume of a series on the Scottish church dealing largely with the church's relationship with the secular community and with the nature of Scottish nationhood after the country had been deprived of its parliament in 1707. The book makes out a case for those much abused but tolerant men, the Moderates, who turned their backs on disputes, and tried to commend the Christian faith in the period of the Enlightenment.

The words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount have moved and challenged men and women since he first spoke them. Here hey are explained, simply and clearly, showing how Jesus mixed honesty with compassion and helped people to inject good into life. This is the New Law. The Old Law is the name given to the Ten Commandments, and this book starts with them. Are the rules, which guided a band of slaves escaping through the desert, worth thinking about now? Professor Barclay shows that they are. This straightforward study raises questions about war and peace, God and materialism, and about fostering essential relationships and values.

In twenty-two short chapters, William Barclay here takes a quick but comprehensive look at the whole New Testament. His aim is to 6ncoUrage us to read again, or to read for the first time, the New Testament itself. We are invited to stand back and regard it as a whole and not simply as a collection of texts. In the face of all its variety we are left with the following questions. In all the variety is there something basic? Is there a dominant and unchanging theme? A constant, which gives the diversity a unity ? Dr Barclay maintains that the New Testament is all the time saying three things. First, that God exists and is the creator who is still intimately concerned for all his creatures. Second, that despite this, something has gone wrong with the relationship between man and God ; man has used his free-will to go his own way rather than God's. Third, it is Jesus who puts the relationship right, either because he is the perfect sacrifice, or because his life and death are an irresistible demonstration of the love of God. The New Testament sets forth man's dilemma and God's remedy for it. These studies were first published as a series of monthly articles in the Church of Scotland magazine, Life and Work. They are now collected in one volume, with the addition of a concluding chapter.

After Jesus had done his main work on earth and had returned to his Father, the total number of his followers amounted to 120 people... How did that little band of 120 simple people become part of a vast multitude of Christians?"The explanation of this amazing increase," writes Professor Barclay, "is none other than Paul." In this stimulating book the story of the pure-blooded Jew, Pharisee, Roman citizen, persecutor of Christians, dramatically converted into the first and greatest Christian missionary, is told with great force. The reader is made to feel the stresses and strains of life in first century Asia Minor and the Mediterranean, especially as they affected small Christian communities. Here one can appreciate the stature of the apostle Paul as he overcame his physical handicap to bring the gospel of Jesus to the centre of the known world.

A Confession of Faith is a short statement of the author's personal beliefs and of what he holds to be reasonable grounds for them. His aim is not to give dogmatic instruction but, by examining his faith in the light of his experience of life, to stimulate others to engage in a similar exercise.

In handy alphabetical order, notes are presented on over 180 selected people and places of interest and importance in the long and fascinating story of the Church in all its forms in Scotland. In addition, over 460 cross-references are provided to assist in tracing connected names and sites. This is neither a biographical dictionary nor a religious gazetteer. The author has made his own wide choice of subjects, on which he then gives his impressions and comments, the result of careful research on the people and of personal visits to most of the places mentioned. The choice concentrates not on the best-known figures or most-visited places but rather on those which, though significant, tend to be passed over in popular histories and guidebooks, covering not only the Catholic and Protestant streams of the Church but also some strange and lesser-known sects. The book is intended for readers wanting to learn about the ecclesiastical institutions in their locality, for visitors eager to uncover some of the romance of Scottish church history, and not least for teachers and students whose projects in environmental studies will be incomplete unless they include the church buildings and religious monuments of the country. All who use these notes should find in them a little about the highways and quite a lot about the byways of Scottish life as it related to the things of the spirit. Mr Towill's easy-to-use compilation is the first of its kind on this subject, with an approach wide enough to be of interes't and value to a great variety of readers, regard less of denomination or religious faith. A chronological index of people and a geographical index of places are provided, plus a section on bibliography and sources, and the whole work is further enhanced by Colin Gibson's fine drawings.

The Iona Community has always aroused questions. What is it? How did it begin and why? What is its purpose today? In this book, Ralph Morton gives his personal impressions of the early years and then goes on to consider its later development and future role. Ralk Morton served the Iona Community as Warden of Community House Glasgow (1943-54) and as Deputy Leader (1951-67).

Karl Barth is the foremost theologian of the twentieth century, some would say since Thomas Aquinas. Our understanding of Jesus- our Christology- is crucial to Christian faith. It is the touchstone by which everything else stands or falls, and it is at the centre of the present-day theological debate. In this study, Professor Thompson brings the two together. He seeks to understand Barth on Christ. In his words, 'to let Barth be heard on a central (indeed the central) theme of his theology'. It is the first comprehensive treatment of its kind and one which proves to be very relevant for our discussions about Jesus today.

Once within the reach of only a privileged few, a pilgrimage to the Holy Land is nowadays made by many thousands of ordinary men and women every year. This is a book written by one who has intimate and extensive knowledge of the Christian places in the Holy Land. He writes for those who have been on a Holy Land pilgrimage and for those who hope to go on one but also for all who never will. Written in the form of a description of an actual Holy Land pilgrimage, the book takes the reader on a magic carpet of imagination round the principal Christian places there, accompanying the narrative with photographic illustrations.

THE DAILY STUDY BIBLE does not need an introduction: having sold in excess of five million copies it is known throughout the world precisely for what it is: a daily study Bible. This INDEX is an aid to its greater use. By means of a six-fold division (of Old Testament references; of New Testament references; of Subjects and Places; of Personal Names; of Foreign Words, Terms and Places; and of Ancient Writings) the reader is enabled to explore further the ideas, opinions and subjects - as well as the sources - used in the individual parts of the series.

There is a permanent fascination about the lives of eminent people, and this is no less true of those whose faith and religious zeal have made them 'great'. In this new book the author provides a series of mini-biographies of forty-five of the better known saints, and brief notes on many more. They include a wide range of people, male and female, who have some connection with Scotland and influenced its religious life and traditions.

'Conversion,' writes William Barclay in his foreword, 'is a subject which very much needs our thought... Very certainly, conversion is a word which can never be eliminated from the vocabulary of the Christian, but equally certain the means towards it and the results of it must alter from generation to generation.' Here is an important, introductory study of the subject from the biblical viewpoint and of the means and results which attend it. To these has been added an previously unpublished Epilogue in which the Christian way is carefully described, high-lighting the demands of discipleship which makes ideal reading for young Christians.

Man is continually involved in a twofold combat situation: of having to wrestle with himself, and with the problems which surround him in society. In this book William Barclay expounds the thinking of Paul on these problems as it is set out in Galatians 5, and shows that through Christ the perfect and adequate release is found.

'The task of the Christian Church in this, as in any other age, is to communicate to men the truth of God as we find it in the word of God.' William Barclay, rightly described as one of the foremost communicators of Christianity today, here sets about that task, showing how and why it should be done. As always his work is written against the full biblical background ('Communicating the Gospel in the Prophets'); a description of the way the Apostles went about their task ('Communicating the Gospel in the Apostles'); thence to the challenge of doing so today ('we can never communicate Jesus Christ to others until we know him ourselves'); and closes with an outline of 'the Gospel in Tradition'.

In this book, the author reflects on the high challenge of Matthew's Gospel, and the person who is its centre.

How did the Bible, the Canon of Holy Scripture, evolve into the form in which it exists today? This book tells us how. The study of the Canon has come to be looked upon as one of the dry and less -interesting fields of Bible study. That a great pity, for it is by such study that we come to see the essential greatness of Scripture.

Word and sacrament go together. At infant baptism. the word is addressed to parents. but also to the congregation, whose presence means that a variety of presentation is necessary.," This book provides over one hundred examples from a parish minister who has tried to find a fresh word each occasion.

This book is a refreshing antidote to weighty tomes attempting to list every detail of the life of William Barclay. Here we glimpse the real man as he was known by his close friends. A man whose self-confessed aim was to destroy the theological gobbledegook so prevalent in Christian circles, and make the Gospel message clear and relevant to the ordinary man and woman. We see a full and-active life tinged with joy and sometimes sorrow, but always characterised by that great love and enjoyment of people that made him such a popular figure. This is truly a 'personal memoir' of a great man. James Martin was a close friend of William Barclay for over 25 years. Born in Motherwell, he attended the same school as Barclay, Dalziel High, and went on to graduate MA, BD from the University of Glasgow. He has been minister of High Carntyne Church in Glasgow since 1954, and received an honorary DD from the University of Glasgow in 1983. His publications include A Plain Man in the Holy Land and Listening to the Bible.

In the Foreword to the first edition of this book, Brigadier Lord Ballantrae, Lord High Commissioner in 1973 and 1974 commended the book to all Church of Scotland members adding that we should have had something like it in our hands years ago'. Some ten years on Dr Herron has fully revised and updated that first edition, setting out clearly and simply the 'where, when and who' of the annual gathering, taking the reader step by step from the Opening Service to the Final Sederunt. The result is another very readable and helpful guide from the pen of Dr Herron. The Very Reverend Andrew Herron MA, BD, LLB, DD, LLD, was Clerk to the Presbytery of Glasgow from 1960 to 1981. A former parish minister and Moderator of The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1971, his other books include: A Guide to Congregational Affairs, A Guide to the Presbytery and kirk by Divine Right. He is also Editor of The Church of Scotland Year Book.

Concise but detailed account on preparing and gaining admission to ministry; the duties and opportunities therein; and advice on the means by which the individual may leave the Ministry.

What exactly is it like to be a disabled person within society and the Church? The author, himself disabled, argues that disabled people should not be seen merely as a source of inspiration but as valid and valuable contributors who could be encouraged if institutions were to take positive steps to integrate and listen to them. The book's main thrust is to develop a theology which shows that Christ identifies with disabled people and that on the cross shows the same vulnerability which so often concerns and frustrates those who are disabled. The author offers a fresh attempt at developing a theology of disability-something new for British theological discussion. W Graham Monteith was born in Glasgow and educated at Westerlea School for Spastics, Edinburgh and Ross High School, tranent. At the University of Edinburgh he read Sociology and Systematic Theology. From the University of York he gained a BPhil in Sociology of Religion and has carried out post-graduate research in both France and Belgium. He is currently a Parish Minister at the linked parishes of Hoy and Walls and Flotta and Farra, Orkney. Kenneth M Boyd, the editor of the series, is Scottish Director of the Institute of Medical Ethics. Dr Boyd is also Chaplain to Overseas Students at the University of Edinburgh and serves as Associate Minister of St John's and St Cuthbert's Ecumenical Project in Edinburgh.

One of a series of books on key individuals in the Christian life, which introduces them against their contemporary background with a concise biographical chapter, followed by examples of their works. This book looks at the life of John Knox.

From the author of the ever popular author of A Scots Gospel comes a gospel written in Glasgow's distinctive vernacular. With the author's characteristic enthusiasm and sense of the dignity of this most beautiful of all stories, the drama unfolds-from the joy of the birth of Jesus, to the tragedy of his betrayal, and the joy of the resurrection. This is a book to be read out loud and quite simply enjoyed.
