For most of his life Martin Ferguson Smith (born 1940) has been closely engaged with the teachings of the Greek philosopher Epicurus (341-270 BC). Epicurus adopted and adapted the atomic theory developed by Democritus, but regarded scientific knowledge as subservient to the moral end, which is pleasure, specifically absence of pain in the body and absence of trouble in the mind.Martin has a particular interest in two of Epicurus' followers, each of whom regarded his master as the saviour of humanity. One is the Roman poet Lucretius (first century BC), author of On the Nature of Things, which Martin has translated and edited. The other is Diogenes of Oinoanda (second century AD), who displayed his exposition of Epicureanism in a gigantic Greek inscription, the longest one known from antiquity, in his upland home city in southwest Turkey. Diogenes addresses not only the people of Oinoanda, but also so-called foreigners who are actually fellow citizens in a world which is one country for humanity. Since 1968 Martin has been involved in Oinoanda's exploration, first independently, later in collaboration, and has seen the number of known pieces of Diogenes' work more than tripled. The new texts are among the most remarkable classical finds to have been made anywhere in the last two centuries, and the inscription has the fascination of an unfinished jigsaw puzzle.Martin was educated at Shrewsbury School, alongside John Peel, and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he was a foundation scholar, took a "first" in Classics, and wrote a postgraduate dissertation on Lucretius. After service as professor of Classics in Bangor and Durham and adventures not only in Turkey, but also in communist Albania and Romania, he moved to the remote island of Foula in Shetland. There he has lived in contented isolation for thirty years, without a shop, television, or smart phone.Alongside his classical work, he has written four "modern" books: Dearest Jean (2011); Madeleine Symons (2017); In and Out of Bloomsbury (2021); and The Artist Helen Coombe (2023). Of particular relevance to Martin the Epicurean is his Urbi et Orbi: The Epicurean Inscription and Prescription of Diogenes of Oinoanda (2026), Open Access and paperback.

Three children born in 1944. Three families marked by war; a time of terror, bombs and absences.Three fathers: One only known to his child as the framed picture on the dresser. Another comes home safely but can’t love the new child whose crying competes with his own nightmares. The third is completely unknown – only smelt and felt in the blackout by his victim, the very young woman who can’t love or stay with her unwanted baby. For the babies of 1944 the stories that were told to them and about them – and the secret thoughts that were kept from them in their earliest years – shape their sense of themselves. These stories continue to grab and cling, leaving each of them with difficult questions and choices. What will they seek, or seek to avoid, as they look for love? When these three connect in the 1960s, the world is a changed place. People speak of peace yet there are running battles and even tanks on some streets in the West, and rockets and bombs are again setting the Far East on fire. How will the stories of their beginnings guide them in this new world?

John Rigg has been an 'ordinary spectator' - not only of rugby but of football and cricket and other sports - for 50 years. This is a warm and engaging memoir of half a century of sports spectating - from Yorkshire to London to Scotland via New York and Sydney (and Minsk!). It presents a unique perspective on why live sport is compulsive viewing.

A collection of intensely personal poems from a young South American woman, depicting her feelings as she ventures away from her home country of Colombia, leaving her family and friends, to travel the world. Along with detailed and vibrant observation of her surroundings, the poems cover her dreams for the future and her longing to travel, intermingled with commentaries on friendship, love and faith as well as life events. The poems were written in the 60s and 70s but the thoughts and sentiments are timeless. Most of them are in English but there is a short section of Spanish ones at the end of the book, written when the author was in her youth. Whatever your mood and whoever you are, this collection has something that will appeal and reach out to you.

This book is fiction. The story that inspired it was not. In 1990, a box of very old documents was found on a small farm in the west of Ireland. They had been stored for well over a hundred years and told an incredible story of suffering, of love and of courage. In 1846, a young couple met during the worst days of the Great Irish Famine. The Killing Snows is a way to imagine what led to their meeting and what followed from it.

Will the spark between Sally and her tutor constable Alex ever be ignited? Will summary justice be served on the station bully? This book is the 'always there' book for your bedside table. It's ideal to dip into as a late night distraction from your day's stresses, or to break the monotony of a morning commute. And it's likely to spark up quite a different way of seeing things...Yes, these cautionary tales are not always your usual 'happily ever after' type of story. They're tales with a twist for this digital age, where appearances are never quite as they seem. For when so many of us are now part-silicon and rely on virtual technology daily, the 'fantasy' and what is 'really real' are easily confused. So the modern fairytale is born (botoxed to hide its medieval wrinkles, of course). Dabble and decide what these tales mean for you, or perhaps whether you have one to tell? Just take care not to overload your chip! As actually, that's the point of them.

This book is a brief view of what has come to be over a period of 13.7 billion years; one not simply, collectively, and consequentially previously told. In the language of yesteryear, it takes us from bang to man; or in that of today, from forces to females. It briefly summarises the evidence that answers the child's question "how did people get here?" But more importantly, on the basis of this, and other, evidence, it then strives to answer their further question "why do people do that?" The answers challenge adults and, looking at the world's problems, are of supreme importance - for the vast majority of the world's populace are either unaware of, or do not accept, many fundamental evidence-based truths. It is to them that "Testing Truths" is addressed.

Lee made the same journey in 1935 and walked straight into the perfect storm of the Spanish Civil War and described the experience in his rite-of-passage book As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning. Like so many, as a young man, Paul read the book and fell in love with both Spain and Lee. Paul, like Lee, has always dreamed of walking down those white, dusty roads, lined by orange groves, all the way to Seville. Paul is the first writer to fully retrace Laurie Lee's classic 1935 journey through Spain.

Saba, a charismatic shaman gifted with amazing powers, is from a fisher tribe living in forested isolation around the great eel lake and northern coast of Ireland. She is rescued from a perilous attack and becomes the lover of Fion, the headstrong leader of a Bronze Age clan. Inspired yet haunted by her partly Inuit ancestry, Saba incurs tribal jealousy and hatred. The dynamic which involves Saba, Fion and an exotic array of personalities in devastating conflicts for power and gender domination, is imbued with the primal psychic energy of a harsh and earthy age. If like them, we combine our outer and inner perceptions of a more than human world, the mysteries come alive as in dreaming, where the boundaries which surround the 'self' are dissolved. This seminal epic of Old Europe spans the Newgrange and Maltese temple rituals, Akkadian, Kretan and Eastern cultures. Those who enjoyed Jean Auel's Earth's Children series should find 'Saba's Choices' an enthralling read.

An unwanted love interest was followed by a traumatic incident. In an ironic twist of fate, failure in her exams turned Lily's destiny around. She returned from India to Malaysia. Born at 1 Fairview Cottages, Terry John Clark grew up in the home where his family had resided since 1908. It was his happy upbringing in this town, which holds so many fond memories, that prompted him to research and write this history of Bracknell, a town within the Great Windsor Forest.
