This volume continues the major project of creating a reliable means of identifying British medieval coats of arms, which began in 1940; it will be of interest not only to heralds, but also to aid historians, archaeologists, genealogists, and antiquaries. This book of Crests follows a series of four earlier volumes of Arms together designed to enable those with a working knowledge of heraldry to identify medieval British Arms. The project is the result of a bequest to the Society of Antiquaries in 1926 for the production of a new edition of Papworth's Ordinary which has remained, since its publication in 1874, the principal tool for the identification of British coats of arms. An Ordinary, in this context, is a collection of Arms or Crests arranged alphabetically according to their designs, as opposed to an armory which is arranged alphabetically by surname. The present work covers Crests dating from the period before the beginning of the heraldic Visitations in 1530. Its publication will mean that historians, antiquaries, archaeologists, genealogists, heraldists, antique dealers and collectors will be able to identify Crests on tombs, monuments, seals, textiles, metalwork, glass and other medieval artefacts with a greater degree of accuracy than has hitherto been possible. Even those without a knowledge of the subject will be able, by means of the index, to discover the blazons of Crests recorded under particular surnames in the Middle Ages.

This is the first in a series of volumes designed to enable those with a working knowledge of heraldry to identify medieval British coats of arms. Its publication will mean that historians, antiquaries, archaeologists, genealogists, heraldists, antique dealers and collectors will be able to identify arms on tombs, monuments, seals, textiles, metalwork, glass and other medieval artifacts with a far greater degree of accuracy than has hitherto been possible. Even those without knowledge of the subject will be able, by means of the index, to discover the blazons of arms recorded under particular surnames in the Middle Ages. This volume covers arms whose descriptions fall alphabetically between Anchor and Bend.

This is the second in a series of volumes designed to enable those with a working knowledge of heraldry to identify medieval British coats of arms. This volume covers arms whose descriptions fall alphabetically between Bend and Chevron.

This volume is the third of a projected four-volume Medieval Ordinary, an Ordinary being a collection of arms arranged alphabetically according to their designs, as opposed to an armory which is arranged alphabetically by surname. This Ordinary covers the period from the beginnings of heraldry in the twelfth century to 1530, the end of the medieval period for English and Welsh heraldic chronology, which is when the county surveys known as Heralds' Visitations began. The Dictionary follows the principles of exact description laid down by Papworth in 1874, and this work is essentially a new edition of Papworth's Ordinary. This volume covers arms whose descriptions fall alphabetically between Chief and Fess including Cross and Escutcheon.

This volume continues the major project of creating a reliable means of identifying British medieval coats of arms, which began in 1940; it will be of interest not only to heralds, but also to aid historians, archaeologists, genealogists, and antiquaries. This book continues the Dictionary of British Medieval Arms, a major work which is designed to enable those with a working knowledge of heraldry to identify medieval British coats of arms. The Dictionary is the result of a bequest to the Society of Antiquaries in 1926 for the production of a new edition of Papworth's Ordinary which has remained, since its publication in 1874, the principal tool for the identification of British coats of arms. An Ordinary, in this context, is a collection of arms arranged alphabetically according to their designs, as opposed to an armory which is arranged alphabetically by surname. The indices of the four volumes act as an armory. The Dictionary covers the period before the beginning of the heraldic visitations in 1530. Its publication will mean that the wide range of people interested in medieval arms - historians, antiquaries, archaeologists, genealogist and those dealing in and collecting medieval objects - will be able to identify accurately the arms that occur in a medieval context. Even those without a knowledge of the subject will be able, by means of the index, todiscover the blazon of arms recorded under particular surnames in the Middle Ages.

The 4 volume set provides a complete dictionary, an invaluable reference for studying or working with medieval British coats of arms. The Dictionary is the result of a 1926 bequest to the Society of Antiquaries for the production of a new edition of Papworth's Ordinary which has remained, since its publication in 1874, the principal tool for the identification of British coats of arms. An Ordinary, in this context, is a collection of arms arranged alphabetically according to their designs, as opposed to an armory which is arranged alphabetically by surname. Now complete, the Dictionary covers the period before the beginning of the heraldic visitations in 1530. The publication of its fourth and final volume means that the wide range of people interested in medieval arms - historians, antiquaries, archaeologists, genealogists and those dealing in and collecting medieval objects - are able to identify accurately the arms that occur in a medieval context. Even those without a knowledge of the subject will be able, by means of the index, to discover the blazon of arms recorded under particular surnames in the Middle Ages. The set is, therefore, an essential reference that will remain the standard work for generations to come.

Modern-day Aldborough, in North Yorkshire, lies on the site of Isurium Brigantum, the former administrative capital of the Brigantes, one of the largest indigenous tribes of Roman Britain. Strategically located on Dere Street, by the second century AD it had become a key Roman town engaged with the supply of the northern frontier, with buildings and mosaics that reveal a thriving economy through to the fourth century.  In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the site of Isurium Brigantum was the subject of important antiquarian investigations. However, unlike some southern counterparts – for example, Calleva Atrebatum or Verulamium – in the twentieth century it attracted less archaeological attention until, in 2009, a team of archaeologists led by Dr Rose Ferraby and Professor Martin Millett began a major re-examination of the site. Large-scale geophysical surveys using both gradiometry and high-resolution ground-penetrating radar were conducted and these revealed most of the town and its surroundings, allowing its development from the second century AD to the medieval period to be mapped with great accuracy. Bringing together for the first time the results of large-scale geophysical surveys of Isurium Brigantum with a re-evaluation of earlier antiquarian study and more recent archaeological fieldwork and excavations – some never before published – providing provides historians and archaeologists with exciting new information about the topography of a key Roman town engaged with the supply of the northern frontier of Britain, and about its development and later landscape, together with a thorough review of the town in the broader context of Roman Britain and the western Empire.

Since the completion of the four volumes of _Roman Mosaics of Britain_ covering all of Britain to 2010, more mosaics have been discovered and research has continued. The present volume brings the catalogue up-to-date to July 2023, while the first part is devoted to various aspects of mosaic, including subject matter, context, design and manufacture. This is a lengthy overview of mosaic research, which could only be discussed on a regional basis in the previous volumes. The principal finds are the amazing figured mosaics, from Boxford, West Berkshire and Ketton, Rutland, arguably the most important discoveries in over 60 years. However, there are also numerous mosaics from other sites, illustrated along with building plans where possible, including re-excavation of known mosaics and historic recordings that have re-emerged since 2010.

This is an inter-disciplinary study of pathways to regional rulership and territorial lordship in early post-Roman Britain which takes as its starting point the East Anglian royal centre at Rendlesham and its contexts. This book examines the origins and development of the East Anglian kingdom in the fifth to eighth centuries AD through the lens of the elite settlement complex at Rendlesham, Suffolk using an interdisciplinary approach involving field survey, landscape history, excavation and metal-detecting finds. It also examines the wider regional context and proposes a new narrative of kingdom formation.
