Abstract This is the final publication of the Hekatomnid Oikoi at Labraunda. According to the dedicatory inscription on the architrave, it was built by Idrieus (351/0 to 344/3 BC), who was the brother of Maussollos and his successor as satrap of Karia. The excavations and the architecture of the building are systematically presented in the volume, together with plans and elevations of the building and reconstructions. A catalogue of marble blocks from the antae, the columns, the entablature, and the roof is included, as well as a large collection of photographs and drawings. The building consists of two rooms behind a porch. The walls are of local gneiss, and the front, which has four columns in antis, is of marble. The columns and the epistyle are Doric, but there is no triglyph frieze, and the geison is Ionic. The building is reconstructed with two separate roofs of marble: one pitched roof covering the portico and the northern room, and a separate pitched roof over the southern room. It is theorized that the smaller, northern room was a banquet room and the larger, southern room was a Hestia hall. The building may have served the purpose of a prytaneion. A phase of restoration appears to have followed in the Roman Imperial period. In Late Antiquity, probably during the 6th century AD, the Oikoi underwent an ambitious building project: piers of stone and brick were built at each of the four corners of the southern room to carry a domical brick vault. This room may have served as a mausoleum. In the northern room, a brick podium, possibly an altar, was built against the middle of the western wall. The two rooms may jointly have served as a martyrion. An inscription mentioning a hearth of Hestia is discussed in an appendix. What is the relationship between borders and knowledge? How do changes in territorial and social borders affect knowledge’s epistemic boundaries; how do changed knowledge boundaries affect physical borders? Which is more resilient; which seems to change most easily? These are the questions addressed by the fourteen chapters in this volume. The volume uses case studies, based on both historical and contemporary sources, to highlight processes of knowledge production within the social sciences and humanities. Our focus is on Middle Eastern societies and peoples – Circassian, Assyrian, Turkish, Arab, Kurdish… – living around or having moved north from the Mediterranean. One central subject is the influence of migration and travel on the relationship between the geographic and linguistic borders established by nation-builders, and those constructed by scholars, travellers and commentators. A second is the transfer and translation of textual elements of knowledge – e.g., cultural repertoires or historical narratives – from one linguistic social setting to another. Together with an introductory discussion of the book’s three border-knowledge themes, the studies present new theoretical and methodological conceptualisations of the intriguing and manifold relationship between physical, social borders, and the boundaries of knowledge.

This study focuses on a quantitative analysis of Late Antique remains that have been recorded at the sanctuary of Labraunda from 1948 to 2011, and that date mainly to the period c. AD 300-600. The study comprises of all the diagnostic material from Late Antiquity found at the site, including architecture, architectural sculpture, ceramics, glass, inscriptions/graffiti, coins, organic remains, and various other small finds. The architectural remains include two church complexes, a residence with a tetraconch bath, and several rebuilt structures within the ancient temenos.

The city occupying the narrow peninsula between the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara has gone by various names throughout history: Byzantion, Constantinople, Istanbul … In spite of the popular imagination envisioning its history in terms of sharp breaks and divisions between different religions, cultures, and empires, the city often shows a remarkable continuity in its geopolitical role as a zone of interaction and nexus between seas and continents. As the capital city of three empires spanning centuries, it demonstrates the political continuity of the Late Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. From an economic perspective, goods and gifts, people and groups moved past and through it alongside more abstract cultural artifacts such as stories and iconographies. This book transcends the geographical and historical divides that pervade the perception of the city by focusing less on the city as such than the space it occupies, the wider areas it connects, and the agents or actants that have passed through it from the Late Antique to the Early Modern era.

In January 1710 the Swedish king Charles XII, in exile in the Ottoman Empire, sent three of his officers on a journey from the royal camp near Bender in Moldova to travel to Constantinople and from there along the Eastern Mediterranean to Egypt. Their mission was "to view the there existing rarities and monuments, to draw and to measure". Cornelius Loos, one of the young officers, returned to his king in 1711 with more than 250 drawings. Only forty-nine, kept under the king´s bed, survived a skirmish in the camp 1713, the so called kalabalik at Bender. King Charles had a vision to publish an encyclopaedic work about the Near East, a dream that was lost in the fire in the camp. The drawings were brought to Sweden when the king returned from the Ottoman Empire in 1714. He died in battle in Norway in 1718. Loos´ drawings are unique documents of Constantinople in the early 18th century, with large scale, detailed panoramas, important prospects of the interior of the Hagia Sophia and views from the Ottoman city. A big map is accompanied by minor drawings from the Black Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean and Egypt, as well as a spectacular set of water-colours of head dresses from the Ottoman world. The Loos collection of drawings is today kept in the National Museum in Stockholm.

In the decades following World War II, the former imperial capital of Istanbul entered a new stage of urban development. Large-scale transformations of its outline and edifices reimagined the cityscape while at the same time the conservation of the rich architectural heritage became a major issue. These efforts crystallized in a number of public space projects, where modernity and tradition were envisioned, manifested and negotiated artistically, structurally and socially. Major infrastructural projects competed with concerns for human scale as well as for local habits and vernacular tastes, as represented in architectural forms, ornamental details and visual arts. Stressing both the continuity and radical renewal of Istanbul in the period from 1950 to 1980, the studies in this volume analyse the emergence of the ‘late modern’ version of the megacity.

The Palais de Suède in Istanbul is the first Swedish embassy building built on state-owned land abroad, the oldest such Swedish property in the world. The main building, the present Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul, was completed in 1870-1871 as the legation (embassy) of the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway in Constantinople. It housed Sweden's official representation to Turkey until 1934, when the embassy moved to Ankara, the capital of the new Republic of Turkey. With the move of the embassies to Ankara, the "glory" of the erstwhile embassy palaces in Constantinople that in themselves typify European elements of the character of the city and the country was, in the words of the historian and travel writer John Julius Norwich, "stolen away". The Swedish property in Istanbul is situated in pole position on Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), formerly known as the Grande Rue de Péra. It also houses the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul, established in 1962. The estate is maintained by the National Property Board of Sweden, the government agency responsible for state-owned properries, land and historic buildings. Its prominent location to some extent reflects an eighteenth-century defense alliance that resulted in the epithet of Sweden as "Turkey's oldest friend". This book traces almost three hundred years of Swedish presence in the former Ottoman capital and modern metropolis, with a focus on the Palais de Suède itself in the wake of its 150th anniversary.

This volume presents thirteen papers on different aspects of the cult of pillar saints – stylites – and their reception in texts and images. It highlights the ambiguities and disruptive potential of this Syrian hagiographical heritage, an outstanding aspect of Late Antiquity which breaks free of conventional piety and becomes enmeshed with social and political discourses beside the spiritual and religious ones. The two main parts on textual and visual reception – from Theodoret of Cyrrhus to Luis Buñuel – are followed by an anthology of literary and artistic interpretations of stylites, demonstrating how their powerful message has kept fascinating readers and beholders from the Late Ancient to the Modern period.

This volume is the result of a series of workshops, organized within the framework of the Swedish Research Links Programme (MENA), a program financed by the Swedish Agency for Development Cooperation (Sida) and administered by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The program is designed to link researchers in the MENA region with Swedish researchers in collaboration projects of common interest.

In sum, Muslims as well as believers in all religions have always grappled with how to religiously understand and explain developments in society. In more recent times, the many interpretations that exist regarding almost all issues in human life display a plurality of opinions on the ‘true’ meaning of Islam. Islam and the Quest for Modern Science is an excellent introduction to questions that, from a Muslim and confessional position, can be understood either as a challenge, a threat or a possibility. Muslim approaches, confessional or not, toward modern science are undoubtedly diverse, and how to Islamically understand modern science is a key topic at the core of today’s discussion on the function of Islam. Therefore, this book is an important contribution that not only fills a gap in the study of Islam, but also portrays a discourse that touches upon fundamental questions in the production of Islamic theologies and the understanding of Islam among Muslims in general.

This is the final publication of the two Hekatomnid Andrones at Labraunda. The older of these (the Andron of Maussollos or Andron B) was built by the satrap Maussollos (377/6–353/2 BC). This is shown by the dedicatory inscription on the architrave. The other andron (Andron A) is clearly later and was probably built by Idrieus (351/0 344/3 BC), the brother and successor of Maussollos as satrap of Karia. This building has the same kind of dedication, but the name of the commissioner is not preserved. These two buildings are unique both for their size, temple-like front, and high degree of preservation and for their Ionic-Doric mixed order, the function as banqueting halls, and the large niche at the back of the inner room.In the publication the architecture of the two buildings is systematically presented together with plans and elevations of the ruins and reconstructions. The walls are of local gneiss, the fronts and the entablature of marble. From the Andron of Maussollos (Andron B) 130 blocks from the antae, the columns, and the entablature are preserved. A catalogue of those blocks, and a large collection of photographs and drawings are included. From Andron A the blocks are less numerous, but on the other hand the gneiss walls of the building stand to a height of up to c. nine metres, which equals the original level of the column capitals on the front. In the volume are also included some relevant surrounding structures such as the Annexe rooms to the north of the Andron of Maussollos, the Hellenistic so-called Andron C, and the Terrace House just east of Andron A, the roof of which formed part of the terrace in front of the andron.
