'The Nightmare of Sleep' is part one of the 'Evolution of Imagination' which attempts to define what imagination is, how it functions, and trace its unique biological development in us, the Universe's first Time Lords. Every time you touch your forehead you are less than seven millimetres away from a biological computer with more processing power than all the world's computers linked together. Its main function is to run a unique application called 'Imagination' which allows us, Homo sapiens, to live in two coexisting worlds, both the physical and the virtual, simultaneously. Imagination is the hidden force that controls every aspect of our life, for we are all inseparably bound to our very own 'multi-dimensional virtual-reality processor'. On the face of it Imagination is a simple combination of two processes - the first is the ability to select a memory 'before' an event and the second is to be able to 'manipulate' it together with other memories, into a logical sequence, to predict an outcome.Yet this simple ability allows each of us to become a Time Lord, constantly travelling between the past, the present and the future, in less than the blink of an eye. Imagination is our very own subliminal problem solver, constantly running in the background to provide answers to 'what if' scenarios enabling us to mentally assess consequences, without having to hurt ourselves in the physical world, something no other member of the animal kingdom can do. Imagination feeds on Imagination growing exponentially so who knows where it will lead, are we at the dawn of virtual telepathy? Will Imagination physically change us again as it has already? Will it prove to be the saviour of our species or open a Pandora's Box of seismic proportions? Time will eventually tell but for now perhaps the only hope we have of unravelling the future is if we start by tracing the incredible evolutionary steps which led us to acquire this wonderful gift.

The Story of St Katharine's tells the fascinating story of 23 acres of land by the River Thames with a trading history that began in the 10th century. Queen Matilda inaugurated the ancient hospital of St Katharine in the 11th century and so, under royal patronage the precinct grew. Chris West lives close to St Katharine Docks and with the inspiration of the neighbouring Tower of London and Wapping his book describes both the rich history of St Katharine's and the wonderful marina, buildings and amenities that make up St Katharine Docks today.

Anthony J Randall examines the resistance movement along the French and Belgian border during the first year of the Great War, culminating with the execution of Edith Cavell and Philippe Baucq in October 1915.There were others: Louise Thuliez, Henriette Moriamé, Jacqueline Van Til, Princess Marie de Croy and Jeanne de Belleville. They all sacrificed their freedom, if not their lives. Some were from the French and Belgian aristocracy, others were simple peasants; all were patriots. Some were rewarded, others returned to obscurity: all were heroes.Georges Gaston Quien plays his part in the story. A Frenchman for whom the war was a game and for whom the consequences of his actions deserve to be his epitaph.

Throughout his extensive career Alfred Samuels was a bodyguard to some the world's most recognised celebrities. He was a physically active and mentally alert individual who provided the needs of his particular industry over many years. In January 2012 his world came to a sudden and unforeseeable halt when he was diagnosed with advanced metastatic prostate cancer, stage four. Alfred Samuels honest and frank account is one part of his mission to challenge men's attitudes and the taboo surrounding prostate cancer.

During the 1960s and at the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland, the author and her family were the only black family living amongst what she refers to as the 'Irish Mafia'. The 'Mafia' members included people belonging to both the Protestant and Catholic paramilitary factions. This story shares some humorous moments and harsh realities in a gritty account of impoverished life in Ulster through the eyes of a black child, exposed to the daily struggles associated with the civil war.

Alfred Samuels dispels the myth that prostate cancer is an `old man's' disease. While the risk of prostate cancer does increase with age, there are still men in their 40s and 50s who are being diagnosed with the disease, sadly in many cases already at an advanced stage. Alfred has a burning desire to share his experience with someone; anyone who feels that they no longer have the strength to fight this disease and just can't go on any further. He spares no coin, if it would mean saving a life. He deems it a calling, to raise awareness of the disease that claims young and old people alike. This is a rare look inside the mind of a prostate cancer sufferer, and another must-read book for men and their families affected by prostate cancer. In his words, giving up is not an option and naivety is no response to education and awareness. This is author Alfred Samuels' second work. His first book, Invincibility in the Face of Prostate Cancer: Coming Out the Other Side, covered his personal cancer journey.

In 1913 Ada Moore rode her pony along the ancient trade route from Srinagar to Leh, in Ladakh, to join the Moravian Mission there. This was the end of a journey which began in a laundry in Scarborough ten years before and the beginning of an extraordinary thirteen years living and working amongst the Tibetan people of this remote part of India.Ada's daughter, Monica, was born near the Tibetan border. Her book describes living high in the Himalayas in the first half of the 20th century. It gives a rare insight into the domestic and professional life of the missionaries who, from running a school to giving medical help in the most primitive conditions, were involved with the lives of the local people, and who worked to build a connection between different cultures. It tells what they learnt of local customs and beliefs and recounts their hair-raising adventures while travelling by yak and pony amongst some of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery in the world.

Jack Beresford was the first British Olympian to win medals of any colour in five consecutive Olympic Games. His record of 3 Gold and 2 silver medals at the 5 Olympic Games held between 1920 and 1936 remained until Sir Steve Redgrave won gold at the 2000 Sydney Games.Historically, men have had two great chances to prove their mettle; in battle and in sport. While many are aware that Jack Beresford was one of Britain's greatest oarsmen, this affectionate but unsentimental tribute by his son, John, reveals what few know, that Beresford served his country with distinction in war as well as in peace, and both with a modesty that is usually indicative of true merit. It is commonly said, show me the boy and I'll show you the man, and this work reveals that Jack the schoolboy, the soldier and the sportsman was driven by the same strict principals of duty and hard work throughout his life. This is, says John, the story that his Father never wrote. It is also a story with a delicious (if vicious) irony; the German bullet that wounded 19-year-old 2nd Lieutenant Beresford in 1918 led to him abandoning rugby and taking up rowing. Eighteen years later, the German favourites to win the Olympic Double Sculls paid the price of Jack's change of sport as, in the final's last 100 metres, Dick Southwood and Jack Beresford rowed them to a standstill to win Olympic Gold.

DANELAW is based upon articles in the anti-Fascist magazine SEARCHLIGHT in the early 1990's, which reported an attempt by the neo-Nazi group COMBAT 18 to establish a white-supremacist homeland in East Anglia, with Chelmsford as the capital. COMBAT 18 was then under the leadership of `Charlie' Sergeant. However, the attempt failed when the party's accountant tried to abscond with party funds and was caught and stabbed to death by Sergeant in a caravan park in Harlow. At the same time as these articles there also appeared in the magazine reports of so-called `honey-trap' operations by the Secret Service whereby advertisements for new far-right parties were placed in various neo-Nazi magazines and then anyone who applied was placed on record. I combined these two reports into a plot in which the Secret Service decide to set up DANELAW, a whites-only homeland based on the ancient Viking Danelaw of the 9th and 10th centuries, train any applicants into a private army with the apparent intention of attacking mosques, and then at the last minute swoop and arrest them all.Cliff, a sometime football hooligan, is serving a five year prison sentence for assaulting an Asian man when he is visited by the mysterious Mr. Warboys, a "business entrepreneur" who offers him the chance to re-establish the DANELAW - the Golden Age of Viking rule . . . and so begins a darkly-comic tragedy of violence and death . . .

Anthony J Randall examines the life of Joan Clarke and her role in breaking the Naval Enigma at Bletchley Park, alongside Alan Turing. An outstanding mathematician, Joan was the daughter of an Anglican priest and the granddaughter of the Archbishop of Melbourne.Having been recruited by GC&CS at the beginning of the war, Joan stayed with what then became GCHQ until well past retirement age. She worked on the unmasking of Philby, Burgess and Maclean, and on the decryption of intercepted Soviet communications during the Cold War.For ten years she lived 'very quietly' surrounded by the technology of the Cold War and the Early Warning systems installed on the east coast of Scotland, only to return to GCHQ in the early 1960s to take up a new position at Cheltenham, as though nothing had happened during the intervening years.Portrayed by Keira Knightley in the Hollywood film The Imitation Game, in reality Joan Clarke was the quiet woman of British Security; a role she played for forty-five years.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Widnes R.LFC were labeled the 'Cup Kings'. When the team narrowly lost the 199.1 Challenge Cup Final against Wigan, it marked the end of 20 seasons of the Club as a major force in British Rugby League. 'End of an Era' is a chronicle of the last six of those 20 seasons from the 1987/88 until the 1992/93 season. Widnes won two successive Championships, three Premierships, the Lancashire Cup and the World Club Championship in that period.Anthony J. Quinn infers in his book that they could have achieved even more, and perhaps nominated British Rugby League until the advent of Super League in 1996. He suggests the famous World Club Championship victory in 1989 may have had "ramifications". He speculates that it may have cost a third successive Championship and a place in the 1990 Challenge Cup Final, which in turn may have led to the departures of coach Doug Laughton and star winger Martin Offiah from the Club. The author also gives his opinion that the Club should not have signed Jonathan Davies. Whilst acknowledging the Welshman's great performances for Widnes, he writes that his signing was a factor in the Club's financial problems that along with the departures of Laughton and Offiah resulted in an era ending before it should have done.

There were approximately 7,000 full-time bandsmen serving in the British army in the interwar years. This was about a third of the total number of musicians in the music profession in the United Kingdom, making the War Office the largest single employer of professional musicians in the country. British army musicians were a key stakeholder in the music industry in the United Kingdom, but also farther afield, where it made a significant contribution to the maintenance of British imperial authority. To sustain the large number of bands, residential institutions provided young boys for recruitment into the army as bandsmen and, as a consequence, the army set the standard for musical training and performance. The music industry relied upon the existence of army bands for its business and the military played a significant part in the adoption of an international standard of musical pitch. Nevertheless, there was a tempestuous relationship between army bands and the BBC, as well as the recording industry as a whole. Using untapped sources and original material, Major David Hammond reveals the role and soft power influence of British army music in the interwar years.

The Hidden Super Power of Addiction is based on 45 years of professional and lived experience and looks at the 'Celebration of the addictive brain' and the tremendous inherent skills of people with this particular wiring. Sue Cox explains the way to harness and embrace that exceptional wiring and shows how amazing it can be for a person who has left behind their 'drugs of choice' to divert and transform that relentless drive, and become empowered. More than anything, this is a hopeful book of transformation and empowerment. Sue uses a cross-pollination of skills to explore this positive approach, from Chinese medical theories to neuro-science. The Hidden Super Power of Addiction explains how the human brain works, how life events influence us and how the two interact to make us who we are. It spotlights some outdated and false assumptions, and explodes some of the long held negativity that is levelled at addiction and how some addiction services focus is self-serving not on the addicted person. Sue is constantly frustrated by the mis-information on addiction including why the concept of seeing an addicted person as 'ill' is disempowering and limiting to real recovery and rather than continually concentrating on the individual's 'defects' and trying to find where they are at fault, she suggests that it is our quickly moving society where the problem lies and addicts themselves are just born in the wrong century!

'A la Recherche du Temps Perdu' by Marcel Proust is a magnificent and towering achievement of French literature, published in English translation in twelve volumes between 1922 and 1931, and totalling nearly one and a half million words. It is difficult for many readers to find the time and motivation needed to keep going through to the end as Proust has a rich and sometimes discursive style. However, a powerful structure underlies the whole work which is not revealed till the last chapter. This selection, which is less than a quarter of the original, includes all the crucial characters, places and themes needed to understand this and omits everything else. It is not intended to improve the original novels by editing, as many wonderful passages and descriptions have been left out. The style of the book in its vocabulary and sentence structure is unaltered. Nothing is paraphrased or condensed. The text reads as a continuous lively narrative with much of Proust's wit and humour and follows the sequence of the original, showing the development of all the major characters and including all the incidents which are referred to in the closing passages which resolve the whole novel. Proust himself encouraged the publication of "selected passages showing a coherent whole which is not diffused and will make one want to read the whole book" and this is the aim of this selection. It is intended to inspire the reader to go to the full text and enjoy individual sections in the knowledge of where they fit into the whole.

When the Author's Spiritual Director made her aware that it was time to write a report about what she had witnessed, whilst she was meditating, concerning the preparations for the re-emergence of Atlantis, he asked her to include a detailed account of her past lives in which there was a connection with Atlantis. This was to explain why she was in possession of this knowledge about Atlantis, and to demonstrate how our past lives can have an effect on our present lifetime. Many of us experienced one or more lifetimes on old Atlantis, but most of us do not remember them and yet, if the intention is set before meditating, with perseverance, information can be obtained about our past lives. The lifetimes about Atlantis are pertinent to the changes that are taking place on the physical plane regarding a Great Event that is going to happen to our Civilisation. One of the ways in which the meditative state can be entered more easily is to gaze at an inspirational image. To assist the reader in this regard, a very talented artist's illustrations of, 'Inner Landscapes of the Soul,' that are relevant to the theme of each chapter, have been included in the book. The beautiful colours flowing through the landscapes help to carry the reader's awareness of the World of Light to a higher level so that a new found rapport can be gained with Atlantis.

The author has taken a wry look at his life and has come to the conclusion that it's been an interesting one, and at the same time has surprised himself in the process at how long a life it's actually been! According to Me chronicles John Craddock's seven eventful decades on the planet, from hippy-bus globetrotting to the highs and lows of business. As he steps into septuagenarian territory, John looks back at what shaped him - love, loss, music, nature, travel, hardships and friendships. He does so with unflinching honesty, a witty glint in the eye, and yes, the occasional grumpy-old-man growl. An absorbing tale of a life well lived which will appeal to both those who know John and those who will come to know him through his words.
