A memoir of one academic''s lifelong fascination with China, examining China''s history as well as its relationship with Canada.Brian Evans blends memoir and history to draw a vivid picture of China and its cultural outreach over the past three decades. His historical and sociological insights as student, scholar, and administrator form an authentic commentary as he discusses China and the Cold War; the Cultural Revolution; the post-Mao transformation of China; Canada''s relations with China; the cultural impact of the overseas Chinese community on the Canadian Prairies; development of China studies in Canada and elsewhere; the current impact of China on Canadian higher education; and recent Chinese history seen within a broader context. With this book, Evans seeks to make a contribution to the understanding of the nature and wide range of Canada-China relations, an area in which he himself has played a role.Praise for Pursuing China"It''s no dry academic tome. Instead, Evans mixes his analysis of China''s history and geopolitics with raucous yarns, recounting his personal adventures and misadventures, at home and abroad." —Paula Simons, Edmonton Journal"As a memoirist, Evans has two great strengths. The first is his sense of humour, which brings us several wonderful anecdotes. . . . Evans'' second strength is his unflinching honesty." —Diana Lary, Pacific Affairs, Vol. 85, No. 4"[Evans''] book makes compelling reading." —George Fetherling, Diplomat and International Canada, Summer 2012

A social history of tubercular hospitals and Canada''s indigenous population, built around "poignant and at times heartbreaking" firsthand accounts (Choice).Featuring oral accounts from patients, families, and workers who experienced Canada''s Indian Hospital system, Healing Histories presents a fresh perspective on health care history that includes the diverse voices and insights of the many people affected by tuberculosis and its treatment in the mid-twentieth century. This intercultural history models new methodologies and ethics for researching and writing about indigenous Canada based on indigenous understandings of "story" and its critical role in Aboriginal historicity, while moving beyond routine colonial interpretations of victimization, oppression, and cultural destruction. Written for both academic and popular reading audiences, Healing Histories, the first detailed collection of Aboriginal perspectives on the history of tuberculosis in Canada''s indigenous communities and on the federal government''s Indian Health Services, is essential reading for those interested in Canadian Aboriginal history, the history of medicine and nursing, and oral history.

Examine the life of the pioneering guide in these 144 letters sharing his thoughts on immigrating to Canada, his passion for nature, his travels, and more.Conrad Kain is a titan amongst climbers in Canada and is well-known in mountaineering circles all over the world. His letters to Amelie Malek—a life-long friend—offer a candid view into the deepest thoughts of the Austrian mountain guide, and are a perfect complement to his autobiography, Where the Clouds Can Go. The 144 letters provide a unique and personal view of what it meant to immigrate to Canada in the early part of the twentieth century. Kain''s letters are ordered chronologically with annotations, keeping the sections in English untouched, while those in German have been carefully translated. Historians and mountain culture enthusiasts worldwide will appreciate Kain''s genius for description, his passion for nature, his opinions, and his musings about his life."In a culture that enjoys as many romantic figures as there are mountain peaks on the horizon as viewed from a lofty summit, Conrad Kain holds a special place in the historical landscape of western Canada''s mountains. Robinson . . . makes no secret of his affection for Kain, and that''s a good thing, because he handles the letters Kain wrote throughout his adult life while guiding in Canada and New Zealand to his dear friend in Austria, Amelie Malek, with the care and reverence they so richly deserve." —Lynn Martel, Alpine Club of Canada Gazette"From his letters, it''s obvious that Kain loved climbing mountains for the physical challenge, to meet interesting people, to make a living, and for opportunities to travel around the world, but most especially because of his all-consuming love of the natural world." — Cyndi M. Smith, The Canadian Field-Naturalist, Vol. 129, No. 1

An in-depth history of one of Canada''s World War II internment camps that held both Nazis and anti-Nazis alike. For eighteen months during the Second World War, the Canadian military interned 1,145 prisoners of war in Red Rock, Ontario (about 100 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay). Camp R interned friend and foe alike: Nazis, anti-Nazis, Jews, soldiers, merchant seamen, and refugees whom Britain feared might comprise Hitler''s rumoured "fifth column" of alien enemies residing within the Commonwealth. For the first time and in riveting detail, the author illuminates the conditions in one of Canada''s forgotten POW camps. Backed by interviews and meticulous archival research, Zimmermann fleshes out this rich history in an accessible, lively manner. The Little Third Reich on Lake Superior will captivate military and political historians as well as non-specialists interested in the history of POWs and internment in Canada."Most of us have an image of what prisoner of war camps looked like, either from documentary footage about Nazi POW camps, or feature films about World War II, or television situation comedies. The Little Third Reich on Lake Superior shatters all of those stereotypes and, through diligent assembly of public records, multiple library archives and personal interviews, gives us an in-depth picture of a Canadian internment camp. All of this is skillfully organized in a reader-friendly, chronological way." —Michael Sabota, Chronicle Journal"The study shines light on the lesser-known Canadian prisoner of war (POW) camps in World War II. In this well-researched study, Zimmermann describes not only Camp R, but the inmates, guards, military command structure, politicians, and general political environment in Canada and Britain. . . . The work is easy to read and deftly supported by a broad array of sources. Zimmermann''s analysis encompasses Canadian and British history. . . . The Little Third Reich on Lake Superior sets a high standard for future research into civilian internment camps." —Anna Marie Anderson, The Journal of Military History

A Canadian woman shares her story of traveling to South Africa to teach Boer children in concentration camps following the South African War.As the South African War reached its grueling end in 1902, colonial interests at the highest levels of the British Empire hand-picked teachers from across the Commonwealth to teach the thousands of Boer children living in concentration camps. Highly educated, hard working, and often opinionated, E. Maud Graham joined the Canadian contingent of forty teachers. Her eyewitness account reveals the complexity of relations and tensions at a controversial period in the histories of both Britain and South Africa. Graham presents a lively historical travel memoir, and the editors have provided rich political and historical context to her narrative in the Introduction and generous annotations. This is a rare primary source for experts in Colonial Studies, Women''s Studies, and Canadian, South African, and British Imperial History. Readers with an interest in the South African War will be intrigued by Graham''s observations on South African society at the end of the Victorian era."A fascinating perspective on the country. . . . Graham''s account will help others understand how the British and English-speaking Canadians in South Africa perceived Boers and native southern Africans at the turn of the twentieth century, and her descriptions reveal details about everyday life in South Africa at an important moment of transition.... Graham''s book represents the perspective of a well-embedded outsider reporting to far-removed readers, rather than that of a female teacher involved in international or imperial education." —Benjamin Bryce, Historical Studies in Education"Recommended for those who wish to learn more about South African history and early race relations or tensions. Graham''s opinionated writing will amuse and interest those researching women''s studies." —Amy L. Crofford, African Studies Quarterly, Volume 16

Journey across Europe aboard a tandem tricycle in these two Victorian-era travelogues that take readers to England and Italy.A peasant in peaked hat and blue shirt, with trousers rolled up high above his bare knees, crossed the road and silently examined the tricycle. "You have a good horse," he then said; "it eats nothing." —from An Italian PilgrimageThe 1880s was an exhilarating time for cycling pioneers like Elizabeth and her husband Joseph. As boneshakers and high-wheelers evolved into tandem tricycles and the safety bike, cycling grew from child''s play and extreme sport into a leisurely and, importantly, literary mode of transportation. The illustrated travel memoirs of "those Pennells" were—and still are—highly entertaining. They helped usher in the new age of leisure touring, while playfully hearkening back to famous literary journeys. In this new edition, Dave Buchanan provides rich cultural contexts surrounding the Pennells'' first two adventures. These long out-of-print travel memoirs will delight avid cyclists as well as scholars of travel literature, cycling history, women''s writing, Victorian literature, and illustration."In the airy, self deprecating style of Robert Louis Stevenson, an American couple captured the imaginations of UK and US readers through the five illustrated cycle-travel books they created beginning in the 1880s. . . . Elizabeth and Joseph Pennell succeeded in bringing the leisure touring idea to the forefront through their jaunts aboard a tandem tricycle outfitted with luggage racks. . . . Cycling historian Dave Buchanan contributes an enlightening introduction which grounds the couple in the literary/art world of the late nineteenth century and gives a gearhead sense of bicycling history. But Elizabeth''s delightful prose steals the show." —Foreword Reviews

One woman''s story of her struggle to survive while imprisoned in a Soviet gulag following World War II."The terrified yell of my comrades makes me stop. I drop the potatoes into the grass and turn around. He has pulled out the pistol and is taking aim. Slowly I come back."Surviving the Gulag is the first-person account of a resourceful woman who survived five grueling years in Russian prison camps: starved, traumatized, and worked nearly to death. A story like Ilse Johansen''s is rarely told—of a woman caught in the web of fascism and communism at the end of the Second World War and beginning of the Cold War. The candid story of her time as a prisoner, written soon after her release, provides startling insight into the ordeal of a German female prisoner under Soviet rule. Readers of memoir and history, and students of feminism and war studies, will learn more about women''s experience of the Soviet gulag through the eyes of Ilse Johansen."Surviving the Gulag is an unflinching story of being a German woman in the very places that have been written about by so many men." —Lolita Lark, RALPH Magazine

"Atwood provides a window into her own early writing days . . . a treasure for readers interested in Canadian literature because this is where it all began." —Prairie Fire Review of Books"The outburst of cultural energy that took place in the 1960s was in part a product of the two decades that came before. It''s always difficult for young people to see their own time in perspective: when you''re in your teens, a decade earlier feels like ancient history and the present moment seems normal: what exists now is surely what has always existed."In this short work, Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid''s Tale and "Canada''s most famous writer" (The New Yorker), compares the Canadian literary landscape of the 1960s to the Burgess Shale, a geological formation that contains the fossils of many strange prehistoric life forms. The Burgess Shale is not entirely about writing itself, however: Atwood also provides some insight into the meager writing infrastructure of that time, taking a lighthearted look at the early days of the institutions we take for granted today—from writers'' organizations, prizes, and grant programs to book tours and festivals."Allows the reader a brief glimpse into the mind of a great writer and her perspective and experience living through what would now seem to many the Stone Age of the Canadian writing scene . . . invaluable and very readable." —Canadian Literature

Essays detailing one Edmonton woman''s experiences moving to a tough neighborhood in the inner city."Ma''am, you sound like a very reasonable person. Can I advise you to just move?"Carissa Halton and her young family move into a neighbourhood with a tough reputation. As they make their home in one of the oldest parts of the city, she reflects on the revitalization that is slowly changing the view from her little yellow house. While others worry about the area''s bad reputation, she heads out to meet her neighbours, and through them discovers the innate beauty of her community. Halton introduces us to a cast of diverse characters in her Alberta Avenue neighbourhood—including cat rescuers, tragic teens, art evangelists, and crime fighters—and invites us to consider the social and economic forces that shape and reshape our cities."Halton clearly delights in interacting with people from all walks of life; her interest and empathy sparkle throughout. Her tone is factual, nonjudgmental, and often wryly funny. Little Yellow House is a balanced presentation of a diverse community in transition, complete with faults and growing pains." —Rachel Jagareski, Foreword Review"It''s books like this that remind us all . . . that community is more than about special events that happen once a year. It''s about connecting to people often and throughout the year. Doing so can and does result in some wonderful experiences." —Scott Hayes, St. Albert Gazette"An excellent resource for communities wanting to create change. It can also be a starting point for discussion with students." —Judith Kulig, Alberta Views Magazine"In these stark and endearing personal essays, the author celebrates her life and lives fearlessly and fully with three children and a husband, despite a dystopian backdrop. Halton writes with humour, empathy, and spiritual maturity, and she doesn''t judge the inner city world outside her yellow house." —Linda Alberta, Prairie Books Now

The prizewinning author of The Innocents examines the relationships among fact, fiction, fictionalization, and appropriation in this thought-provoking work."In all creative writing, the question of what is true and what is real are two very different considerations. Figuring out how to dance between them is a murky business."In Most of What Follows Is True, Michael Crummey examines the complex relationship between fact and fiction, between the "real world" and the stories we tell to explain it. Drawing on his own experience appropriating historical characters to fictional ends, he brings forward important questions about how writers use history and real-life figures to animate fictional stories. Is there a limit to the liberties a writer can take? Is there a point at which a fictionalized history becomes a false history? What responsibilities do writers have to their readers, and to the historical and cultural materials they exploit as sources? Crummey offers thoughtful, witty views on the deep and timely conversation around appropriation.

They told us to look on the good side of life and to accept what has to happen. The Man Who Lived with a Giant is a collection of traditional and personal stories told by Johnny Neyelle, a Dene Elder from Déline, Northwest Territories. A memoir of disaster, survival, and "how our treasured objects can be the priceless vessels that carry the stories of both our past and our future" (Diane Schoemperlen, author of This Is Not My Life).Four years after Therese Greenwood and her husband moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta, their new community was shattered by one of the worst wildfires in Canadian history. As the flames approached, they had only minutes to pack, narrowly escaping a fire that would rage for weeks, burn more than 85,000 hectares and force 80,000 people to flee. In this book, she tells her dramatic story, and contemplates mourning, memory, and rebuilding."By considering the things that she lost in the blaze and the things that were saved, Greenwood takes the reader with her through her own evacuation, the road to safety, the grief that she experienced on losing her home, and the steps to her recovery . . . a beautiful book, sharply observed [and] gripping." —Miranda Hill, author of Sleeping Funny
