In her book Dr. Sicat interrogates Maximo Kalaw's The Filipino Rebel: A Romance of American Occupation in the Philippines, F. Sionil Jose's Po-on, Linda Ty-Casper's The Three Cornered Sun, and Alfred A. Yuson's Great Philippine Jungle Energy Cafe. Set against the historical conjunctures of the Philippine Revolution against Spain and the Philippine-American war, these novels conceptualize a people free of foreign oppression and therefore ripe for the shaping of the nation. The author points out, however, that the concept of the nation in these novels integrates the masses into a political, economic, and social system dominated by the native elite. The socio-historical forces - ilustrados and pobres y ignorantes - are present: the exploitative relationship between them is absent. Sicat believes that in Philippine literary discourse, the concept of the nation must be imbued with the masses' definition of the nation. The revolution against Spain and the Philippine-American war were fought mainly by the masses, and their struggles can provide the basis for a common meaning, a common history. Instead of belittilng the masses, literature can valorize their consciousness and their language. It can challenge the hidden assumptions of the dominant power system and thereby contribute to the shaping of a strong and authentic nation.

The author shows how the Philippine Constitution: first, gives non-governmental organizations the legal foundation they need to pursue community-organizing and self-help programs, and second, calls on all schools to educate the citizenry about rights while also obliging government to teach human rights to the police and military.

This anthology puts together some sixty-six short stories in English written by Filipino authors within forty years following the introduction of English in the Philippines. Written exclusively by Filipinos, the stories in this anthology reflect the ability of the Filipinos in using a foreign language as a literary medium, after four decades from the introduction of English into the school system in 1901. It is claimed by competent critics that by 1955, the achievement in the Filipino short story in English had been more distinguished than the achievement in the Filipino short story in Spanish, in Tagalog, or in any other native language. It is further claimed that the present collection is more truly national than any similar anthology that could be collected of stories originally written in Pilipino or in any other native language or in Spanish. This collection has a wider geographical, ethnic, or social range than any other anthology.

Suitable for students of Philippine literature.

With contributions from known scholars and political scientists from the University of the Philippines. ---Excerpt from the Foreword:" A unique value of this book may be its presentation of alternative ways of looking at and seeing the making of the Philippine nation and nation-state. Stated in this wise by Jose V. Abueva, the Editor of this volume and of the Anthology, of which this volume is the opener, this means an oblation to the thoughtful reader of a rich and varied mix of ideas, approaches, perspectives, persona of writers, and interpretation. The work shares with history its predilection for the unique and the singular for what is different and unrepeatable historical fact. It does not, in format, look or read like most historical works, disjointed as it deceptively appears. It results nonetheless in becoming a work of history, the work of historians in many cases, through felicitously not so in all cases. The book shares with history, as written record, much of what goes into the making of history...Premises in this Foreword considered, and this anthology demonstrating the capability and the quality of their articulation of Filipino socio-political thought; in light moreover of the further research overall that must needs be done in order to fill gaps and answer important questions in Philippine historiography, the bottom line is clear. The Filipino is worth writing for.
