Different White People presents a trilogy of remarkable stories about campaigns for Aboriginal rights. But the most curious thing about this book is that the central characters in this book are not Aborigines. Some of the ''different white people'' you will meet in these pages are well known Australians, but many are not. But they all had one crucial common characteristic: a singleminded determination to support and protect the rights of Aboriginal people. This book is a journey through three remote regions of Australia.

Two women and three men, displaced in different ways by the rapid transformation of Victorian England, travel separately to a small settlement on Australia''s western rim. Like Ian Reid''s previous acclaimed novels, this powerful story explores intricate relationships between the shaping of character and the pressure of adversity. It reveals damaged families, mixed motives, and the long shadows thrown by the past.

Randolph Stow was one of the great Australian writers of his generation. His novel To the Islands - written in his early twenties after living on a remote Aboriginal mission - won the Miles Franklin Award for 1958. In later life, after publishing seven remarkable novels and several collections of poetry, Stow''s literary output slowed. This biography examines the productive period as well as his long periods of publishing silence. In Mick: A Life of Randolph Stow, Suzanne Falkiner unravels the reasons behind Randolph Stow''s quiet retreat from Australia and the wider literary world. Meticulously researched, insightful and at times deeply moving, Falkiner''s biography pieces together an intriguing story from Stow''s personal letters, diaries, and interviews with the people who knew him best. And many of her tales - from Stow''s beginnings in idyllic rural Australia, to his critical turning point in Papua New Guinea, and his final years in Essex, England - provide us with keys to unlock the meaning of Stow''s rich and introspective works.

In an old house with ''too many windows and women'', high in the Indian hills, young Hannah lives with her older sister Gloria; her two older brothers; her mother - the Magician; a colourful assortment of aunts, blow-ins and misfits; and her father - the Historian. It is a world of secrets, jealousies and lies, ruled by the Historian but smoothed over by the Magician, whose kindnesses and wisdom bring homely comfort and all-enveloping love to a ramshackle building that seems destined for chaos. And then one day the Magician is gone, Gloria is gone, and the Historian has spirited Hannah and her brothers away to a new and at first bewildering life in Perth. As Hannah grows and makes her own way through Australian life, an education and friendships, she begins to penetrate to the heart of one of the old house''s greatest secrets - and to the meaning of her own existence.

In her characteristically direct approach, political analyst Loretta Napoleoni takes on the vexed story-and threat-of North Korea for those of us in the West who remain blinded by its myths and bigotry. Like China''s Mao Zedong, Kim Il-Sung - North Korea''s leader from its founding in 1948 until his death in 1994 - washed away the humiliation caused by Japanese colonisation and re-created an ancient nation. He consolidated and protected the country with strict principles of unity and isolation. His grandson Kim Jong-un is following in the footsteps of Chinese revolutionary politics by modernising the country using the economy as the main tool of transformation. This short, informative book is an account of a country central to world politics and yet little understood. Further, it presents insider narratives of its people, whose self-image is radically different to the image we have of them.
