Evangelical Theology in Transition

This first instalment of the AmSTaR series explores recent developments in Evangelical Christianity in the Netherlands. Dutch Evangelicalism can be understood as rooted in the Reformation, Pietism and other renewal movements. This collection of articles by a number of experts in the field reflects on the boundaries and intersections of the Evangelical tradition in the Netherlands, with a special focus on the themes of transition and fusion. In new cultural and societal circumstances, Dutch Evangelicalism is rapidly changing from a minority group of dissenters to a more established and respected movement within Protestantism and Dutch society. This raises a number of questions about identity, core values, practices and beliefs. The contributors to this volume explore these issues from historical, practical-theological, political, biblical-theological and hermeneutical perspectives in an attempt to understand the role and significance of Evangelical faith in the twenty-first century.
God Remembers
Towards a Theology of Remembrance as a Basis of Reconciliation in Communal Conflict

This is a search for a theological basis of remembrance in communal conflict. Starting with a case study of a real conflict within the HKBP/Christian Batak Protestant Church in Indonesia in the years 1992-1998, this book relates a biblical understanding of remembrance to the work of Johann Baptist Metz, Alexander Schmemann and Miroslav Volf, three theologians who have made significant contributions to the understanding of conflict and remembrance in their own respective Christian traditions. The author argues that history's traumatic wounds are healed by a transformative remembrance of the past rather than by forgetting or ignoring what has gone wrong. And that the act of remembrance in the liturgy of the Eucharist is a highly appropriate place for the actual healing of memory.

In his almost forty-year career as a theologian, Hendrik M Vroom has become an intelligent observer and authority in the field of religious diversity. For more than a century Western theology has been exposed to rigorous criticism, while granting space to other worldview traditions. What was once common has lost its self-evidence, leading to intriguing questions. Do theistic religions worship the same God? Do religions have "the same" morality? Do they accept "the same" rules for accounting what one believes? And as our world becomes more pluralistic as religions change and affect each other, how can their followers be certain about their beliefs and moralities? These are stimulating and essential questions for anyone interested in the phenomenon of religion.
Sense of Serving
Reconsidering the Role of Universities Now

A different vision of the societal role of universities, free universities: this is what nineteen scientists, lecturers and students wish to promote in this publication. Its contributors envisage universities as institutions that have liberated themselves from modern forms of megalomania and perverse incentives. They call upon universities to become places where the Bildung of students is given centre stage and where research will thus become more meaningful for society at large. They picture universities as part of an ecosystem making society more vital and dynamic, more committed, more service oriented, more tolerant and richer: a society where people share their lives with others and where a sense of serving others fosters wellbeing, tranquillity and wisdom.

The Appropriation of Choral Evensong in the Netherlands

There is a popular practice of Anglican choral evensong in the Netherlands outside the context of the Anglican Church. Dutch choirs perform the Anglican daily prayer liturgy: with preces and responses, psalms, canticles, hymns and an anthem, as well as lessons and spoken prayers. Choral evensong attracts many people: believers (of all denominations), ex-believers and non-believers. This paradox, the popularity of choral evensong in a so-called secularised country such as the Netherlands, attracts attention and raises questions. What exactly is going on here? Why is choral evensong so popular in contemporary society? The central topic of the research presented in this volume is the appropriation of Anglican choral evensong within the Dutch context in relation to religious dynamics in Dutch culture.
