This book enables STEMM researchers to write effective papers for publication as well as other research-related texts such as a doctoral thesis, technical report, or conference abstract.Science Research Writing uses a reverse-engineering approach to writing developed from extensive work with STEMM researchers at Imperial College London. This approach unpacks current models of STEMM research writing and helps writers to generate the writing tools needed to operate those models effectively in their own field. The reverse-engineering approach also ensures that writers develop future-proof strategies that will evolve alongside the coming changes in research communication platforms. The Second Edition has been extensively revised and updated to represent current practice and focuses on the writing needs of both early-stage doctoral STEMM researchers and experienced professional researchers at the highest level, whether or not they are native speakers of English. The book retains the practical, user-friendly format of the First Edition, and now contains seven units that deal separately with the components of written STEMM research communication: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Abstract and Title, as well as extensive FAQ responses and a new Checklist and Tips section. Each unit analyses extracts from recent published STEMM journal papers to enable researchers to discover not only what to write, but, crucially, how to write it.The global nature of science research requires fast, accurate communication of highly complex information that can be understood by all participants. Like the First Edition, the Second Edition is intended as a fast, do-it-yourself guide to make both the process and the product of STEMM research writing more effective.

"The book would be a great text for advanced healthcare students, as it is chock-full of fair-minded and complete discussions of different scholarly views. The book contains the musts of excellent text books too: ample caselets, boxes and figures that illustrate key concepts; chapter summaries; and a distillation of key concepts and further reading suggestions stud every chapter. It is useful for practitioners too, with excellent text and case examples of how different nations approach innovation and quality measurement — e.g. pay for performance models — and full discussions of regulations of drugs and devices. All in all, a terrific book for those of us frustrated by the plethora of ‘shoulds’ and the shortages of ‘how tos’ in healthcare innovations."Regina HerzlingerHarvard Business SchoolAcross the world, the demands placed on health systems are growing rapidly. Developed countries face the challenge of providing services to an ageing population with changing health needs, while countries with developing health systems must find ways of ensuring their populations are provided with access to healthcare. Innovative thinking is essential to meet these twin challenges, but innovation is both a cause and cure of many struggles in healthcare — we need it, but it is hard to manage and the introduction of new technology can lead to higher costs.Using real-life examples and case studies from around the world, this book introduces the latest thinking on understanding and managing healthcare innovation more effectively. It does this from the perspective of governments responsible for shaping health policy, healthcare organisations providing services and juggling competing demands, and from the perspective of the industries that supply the new drugs, devices and other technologies.Managing Innovation in Healthcare is the perfect accompaniment for MSc, PhD and MBA students on health policy, management and public health courses, as well as managers, consultants and policy makers involved in healthcare services in both the public and private sector.

"The first two editions of this textbook have received well-deserved high acclaims, and this — the third edition — deserves no less. Its explanations of the whole gamut of atomic and molecular spectroscopy provide a solid grasp of the theory as well as how to understand such spectra in practice. It thus makes an ideal companion to books that start from the observational aspect of spectroscopy, whether in the lab or at the telescope … This new edition of Tennyson’s book ought to be in the library of every astronomical department."The Observatory Magazine"It closely follows the course given to third year UCL undergraduates, and the worked examples have surely been tested on students … The last two chapters serve as an effective appendix on more specialised topics in atomic and molecular theory."Contemporary PhysicsThe third edition of Astronomical Spectroscopy examines the physics necessary to understand and interpret astronomical spectra. It offers a step-by-step guide to the atomic and molecular physics involved in providing astronomical spectra starting from the relatively simple hydrogen atom and working its way to the spectroscopy of small molecules.Based on UCL course material, this book uses actual astronomical spectra to illustrate the theoretical aspects of the book to give the reader a feel for such spectra as well as an awareness of what information can be retrieved from them. It also provides comprehensive exercises, with answers given, to aid understanding.

"The text provides an interesting history of previous and anticipated accomplishments, ending with a chapter on the relationship of fusion power to nuclear weaponry. They conclude on an optimistic note, well worth being understood by the general public."CHOICEThe gap between the state of fusion energy research and public understanding is vast. In an entertaining and engaging narrative, this popular science book gives readers the basic tools to understand how fusion works, its potential, and contemporary research problems.Written by two young researchers in the field, The Future of Fusion Energy explains how physical laws and the Earth's energy resources motivate the current fusion program — a program that is approaching a critical point. The world's largest science project and biggest ever fusion reactor, ITER, is nearing completion. Its success could trigger a worldwide race to build a power plant, but failure could delay fusion by decades. To these ends, this book details how ITER's results could be used to design an economically competitive power plant as well as some of the many alternative fusion concepts.

Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Management contributes to the ongoing debate among innovation scholars and practitioners focusing on the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the ways companies and organizations do business, operate and innovate. It considers AI as a source of innovation both in terms of innovation within the field of AI itself (AI innovation) and in terms of how it enables or disrupts innovation in other fields (AI-driven innovation). The book's content is driven by several important conclusions: AI has a great potential for innovation, but this potential is associated with significant challenges.;There are different views on how to implement AI in innovation management but little agreement and guidance on how to do it. ;AI not only has the potential to produce radically new innovations, but also to rethink innovation management in general.;Deeper knowledge about the innovative impact of AI technologies would be highly relevant to both practitioners and academics within the field of Innovation Management (IM).;It is therefore both necessary and timely to explore the different aspects of the relationship between AI and IM.The contributors to this book include both scholars and practitioners from multiple countries and different types of institutions. They were selected based on their ability to provide a relevant distinctive perspective on the relationship between AI and IM; the degree of their professional engagement with the field; their ability to contribute to the thematic and contextual diversity of the contributions; and their ability to provide actionable insights for both innovation scholars and practitioners.Helena Blackbright (Mälardalen University, Sweden) and Stoyan Tanev (Carleton University, Canada) are chairing the Special Interest Group on AI and IM at the International Society for Professional Innovation Management (https://www.ispim-innovation.com/).

This book offers a rich and wide-ranging account of the development of cosmography in Antiquity, specifically in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. Representing the confluence of geography and astronomy, cosmography played a central role in shaping early scientific thought and humanity's understanding of the world. By tracing how the ancients mapped both the Earth and the cosmos, the book explores not only the evolution of scientific knowledge but also its entanglement with politics, culture, and society.Beginning with archaic cosmographic ideas in the works of Homer and Hesiod, the study follows the discipline's transformation through to the Classical and Hellenistic periods, before examining its reception and adaptation in the Roman Empire and its legacy in medieval Europe. It engages closely with the major thinkers and texts of the Mediterranean world, highlighting the dynamic exchanges between competing intellectual traditions and the political and cultural contexts in which they developed. Particular attention is given to cross-cultural influences, including knowledge inherited from Mesopotamia and Egypt. Drawing extensively on primary sources, the book weaves together a diverse range of voices to show how cosmography both shaped—and was shaped by—the shifting fortunes of intellectual traditions, cultures, and empires.

Cutting through the mass of technical literature on machine learning and AI and the plethora of fear-mongering books on the rise of killer robots, Secrets of Machine Learning offers a clear-sighted explanation for the informed reader of what this new technology is, what it does, how it works, and why it's so important. The surge in computer processing power along with the sheer quantities of training data available, means machine learning is now possible in ways wholly unthinkable just five years ago. Computers can recognize potential lung cancer better than doctors, detect fraud better than bankers, and create fake video almost impossible to tell from the real thing. And next, they are likely to drive our cars.Journalist and news product manager Tom Kohn gets to the heart of the revolutionary new technology that is developing all around us, explaining with precision how the different facets of machine learning work, how companies are using it, and why it is permeating all parts of society right now. The book guides readers through the arcane science and jargon in a clear and understandable way, but is detailed enough that it doesn't gloss over the hard technical concepts. If you want to know why Siri sometimes misunderstands you, how Netflix recommends your movies, and how machine learning will affect your job — read this book.

This book brings together the inspiring, real-life stories of 21 contemporary astrophysicists, revealing the many different paths that can lead to a career in science. Featuring astronomers and astrophysicists from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and countries, it highlights how curiosity about the universe can emerge in unexpected ways and lead to extraordinary journeys.Through personal accounts, the contributors share the challenges they have faced—from uncertainty and setbacks to structural and personal barriers—and how they navigated or overcame them. Alongside these journeys, the book offers fascinating insights into the cutting-edge questions driving modern astrophysics, as well as the diverse range of careers available in the field, extending far beyond the traditional academic route.Aimed especially at students and early-career researchers, this book shows that there is no single path to becoming a scientist. Instead, it celebrates the richness of individual experiences, offering reassurance, perspective, and connection to anyone who may feel uncertain or lost as they find their own way toward the stars.

The interpretation of quantum mechanics has been in dispute for nearly a century with no sign of a resolution. Using a careful examination of the relationship between the final form of classical particle mechanics (the Hamilton–Jacobi Equation) and Schrödinger's mechanics, this book presents a coherent way of addressing the problems and paradoxes that emerge through conventional interpretations.Schrödinger's Mechanics critiques the popular way of giving physical interpretation to the various terms in perturbation theory and other technologies and places an emphasis on development of the theory and not on an axiomatic approach. When this interpretation is made, the extension of Schrödinger's mechanics in relation to other areas, including spin, relativity and fields, is investigated and new conclusions are reached.

A Course in Homogenization-Based Techniques focuses on providing practical insights into select mathematical techniques for multiscale problems, with a close eye on real-world applications. Supported by examples and exercises chosen for their ability to serve as tools illustrating underlying theories — much like appetizers designed to spark further curiosity — this textbook explores the "why" just as much as it explains the "how" of multiscale modeling. It encourages readers to pose their own questions and guides them in approaching this widely applicable and deeply valuable field. Asymptotic analysis — in particular homogenization-based techniques — can offer powerful approximate models and concrete expressions for constitutive laws that bridge the gap between microscopic and macroscopic scales for endless real-world scenarios. Understanding how to couple these scales correctly allows one to unlock entirely new interpretations of otherwise inaccessible microscopic data by linking it to macroscopic experimental observations.Learning to use multiscale modeling in this way opens up a world of possibilities and introduces new dimensions of research to even experienced scientists. For this reason, this textbook seeks not only to train master's and PhD students of applied mathematics in techniques that can be both relevant for their education and of practical importance to their careers, but also to engage with the broader scientific community by enhancing the general mathematical literacy of scientists in the natural sciences and engineering.

In 2013, 200 million people were infected with malaria, resulting in over 584,000 deaths, with the potential to affect over half the world's population. Such is the widespread nature of malaria that it is increasingly believed only a vaccine will lead to its eradication.Although the first attempt at a vaccine was made a century ago, it is only in the last 30 years that real progress in testing has been made, in the hope of discovering a molecule that can provide long-lasting protection against the disease. In July 2015, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced that after 30 years of research it had received the green light from the European Medicines Agency for the world's first malaria vaccine, RTS, S, for use in African children aged 6 weeks to 17 months. This book chronicles the development of RTS, S — done in collaboration with the Walter Reed Army Institute for Research, the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI) and funded in part by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation — as well as previous candidate vaccines. It also focusses on the continuing quest to find more effective vaccines against this continuing health crisis. Finally, it provides an easily understood background on recombinant DNA and monoclonal antibodies and places them in perspective to their contributions to malaria vaccine development. This book serves as a convenient and easily accessible source of information for students, teachers, microbiologists, parasitologists, physicians, clinicians and research funders.

Newtonian mechanics is a cornerstone topic in physics. Regardless of the path an aspiring physicist takes, an intimate and intuitive understanding of how objects behave within Newton's law of motion is essential.Yet the transition from high school physics to university level physics can be — and should be — difficult. The aim of this book is to teach Newtonian mechanics suitable for the first two years of university study. Using carefully chosen and detailed examples to expose areas of frequent misunderstanding, the first two thirds of the book introduces material familiar to high school students from the ground up, with a more mature point of view. The final third of the book contains new material, introducing detailed sections on the rotation of rigid objects and providing an insight into subtleties that can be troubling to the first-time learner. Tabletop physics demonstrations are suggested to assist in understanding the worked examples. As a teacher and lecturer of physics with experience at both high school and university level, Professor Vijay Tymms offers a lucid and sensitive presentation of Newtonian mechanics to help make the step from high school to university as smooth as possible.

This invaluable book provides both an introduction to the rudiments of perturbative string theory and a more detailed introduction to the more current topic of D-brane dynamics. The approach taken is pedagogical, with much of the technical detail streamlined. It is the concise nature of this rapid, but highly coherent, introduction to the subject that distinguishes it from other books on string theory or D-brane dynamics. The third edition has been revised to include a new chapter on the recent topic of string theory in electromagnetic fields. The material is based on courses in theoretical high-energy physics delivered by the author at various summer schools, so its level of appropriateness has been tested and has been resoundingly well received.

All coordination between cells, organs, and organisms depends on successful biocommunicative processes. There are abundant cases of communication in the biological world, both within (intraspecific) and between (interspecific) single-cell and multicellular microorganisms and higher animal forms.Split into two parts, this book first looks at the history, development and progress within the field of biocommunication. The second part presents real-life case studies and investigation into examples of biocommunication in the biological world. Among the organisms covered are bacteria, fungi, plants, terrestrial and marine animals, including bonobos, chimpanzees and dolphins, as well as a new theory of communication between parts in developing embryos (cybernetic embryos). Contributions from international experts in the field provide up-to-date research and results, while in depth analysis expands on these findings to pave the way for future discoveries. As the first comprehensive review of its kind, it is perfect for undergraduates, graduates, professionals and researchers in the field of life sciences.

Islamic Perspectives on the Principles of Biomedical Ethics presents results from a pioneering seminar in 2013 between Muslim religious scholars, biomedical scientists, and Western bioethicists at the research Center for Islamic Legislation&Ethics, Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies. By examining principle-based bioethics, the contributors to this volume addressed a number of key issues related to the future of the field. Discussion is based around the role of religion in bioethical reasoning, specifically from an Islamic perspective. Also considered is a presentation of the concept of universal principles for bioethics, with a response looking at the possibility (or not) of involving religion. Finally, there is in-depth analysis of how far specific disciplines within the Islamic tradition — such as the higher objectives of Sharia (maqāṣid al-Sharī'ah) and legal maxims (qawā'id fiqhīyah) — can enrich principle-based bioethics.
