Ernest Hemingway i absolut högform med novellsamlingen De obesegrade. Nyöversättningen är av Andreas Vesterlund, efterordet av Christian Ekvall. Boken innehåller tio utvalda mästerverksnoveller ur Hemingways stora produktion. Flera av berättelserna ger exempel på den berömda "isbergstekniken", dvs Hemingways sätt att berätta skenbart enkelt och åtstramat och ändå få läsaren att uppleva de djupa känslor och innebörder som ligger dolda under ytan. Här finns till exempel de berömda novellerna "Katt i regnet" och "Berg som vita elefanter" - båda väldigt raka och rena i berättandet, på samma gång mycket stämningsfulla och täta. Laddade med mening. Båda skrivna under 1920-talet när Hemingway ofta reste i Europa med sin första hustru Hadley Richardson och senare med sin andra hustru Pauline Pfeiffer. Båda novellerna handlar om äkta par med begynnande kärleksbekymmer, begynnande gnissel i samvaron. I "Katt i regnet" är paret på ett hotell i ett regnigt Norditalien. Kvinnan ser från fönstret en liten katt som sökt skydd från regnet under ett kafébord. Mannen ligger lojt i sängen och läser en bok. Kvinnan får infallet att försöka få tag i katten, hon vill ha den hos sig på hotellrummet, men det visar sig vara lättare sagt än gjort och diskussionen med maken snarare komplicerar än underlättar. I "Berg som vita elefanter" befinner sig paret i Spanien, på en station. De väntar på tåget och tar en drink på ett utekafé när kvinnan noterar att den vita bergskedja som syns i horisonten liknar elefanter på rad. Mannen vill tala om något annat, något enligt honom mycket viktigare. Båda dessa noveller inbjuder till djuptolkning - vilket Ekvall redogör för i sitt efterord - och det visar att Hemingways beryktade isbergsteknik verkligen fungerar. Här finns också novellen "De obesegrade" om tjurfäktaren som tacklat av och gör allt för att komma tillbaka. Och den berömda novellen "Femtitusen" om boxaren som måste gå en sista match och lockas att i hemlighet satsa pengar på sig själv som förlorare. I flera av novellerna skymtar papparollens komplikationer. Hemingway tyckte om att bli kallad Papa men hade det inte lätt med sin egen far och inte heller med sina tre söner. Prestationskraven var stora, machorollen krävande, ömhetsbetygelserna hämmade. I novellen "Jag antar att allting påminner om nånting" konfronteras huvudpersonen, alltså Hemingways alter ego, med att hans son har vunnit en novelltävling med en berättelse han plagierat ur en bok. Följande noveller ingår: "Katt i regnet", "Berg som vita elefanter", "De obesegrade", "Femtitusen", "Sovvagnskonduktören", "Ett snyggt ställe med bra belysning", "Kvällen före striden", "Ingen dör någonsin", "Jag antar att allting påminner om nånting" och "Goda nyheter från fastlandet".
