Handlingen kan tyckas enkel – Jake umgås med sina vänner i Paris, det är i mitten av 1920-talet, de flesta av romanens personligheter är amerikaner eller engelsmän med en mer eller mindre tillkämpat nonchalant inställning till livet – lika stilfullt ansvarslösa som stilfullt coola – men egentligen desperat törstande efter kärlek och livsmening. Ernest Hemingways roman Över floden in bland träden (Across The River And Into The Trees) i nyöversättning av Andreas Vesterlund och med efterord av Christian Ekvall. Här kommer den kanske mest gripande av Hemingways alla romaner. Det är en romantisk historia om en krigstrött överste som genomlevt andra världskrigets fasor och nu träffar en ung italiensk grevinna i Venedig. Men det är förstås inte en vanlig romantisk berättelse – eftersom det är en Hemingwayberättelse... Överste Cantwell (som har många drag gemensamma med Hemingway själv) är femtio år och hjärtsjuk. Nu är han ute på andjakt utanför Venedig. Hemingway var mycket riktigt med i flera skeenden under slutet av andra världskriget. Han ville gärna påskina att han befunnit sig ännu närmare de avgörande krigshändelserna än han faktiskt gjort och det genom att låta sina romanfigurer skrodera om modiga insatser vid landstigningen i Normandie, striderna i Hürtgenskogen, befrielsen av Paris och så vidare. En annan nära koppling mellan romanen och verkligheten är överste Cantwells kärlek till den unga grevinnan Renata. I verkligheten hette hon Adriana Ivancich. Hemingway träffade henne i Venedig och uppvaktade henne flitigt trots att han då var gift med sin fjärde fru Mary. Adriana bodde till och med några år i Hemingways hem på Kuba, med avsevärda störningar för att inte säga slitningar i husfriden som följd.
