Ellen Key (1849-1926) var en svensk författare, pedagog och kvinnosaksideolog. Under tidigt 1900-tal var Key en av Sveriges mest omtalade samhälls- och kulturdebattörer. Hon skrev böcker, artiklar och pamfletter om ämnen som fred, feminism och folkbildning. Idag kan vi betrakta Key som en särartsfeminist. Hon ansåg att män och kvinnor hade olika könsspecifika egenskaper – som avgjorde vilka roller de borde inneha i hemmet och i samhället. Keys engagemang för den gifta kvinnans rättigheter var stort. 1873 skriver hon en uppsats om den gifta kvinnans äganderätt, en fråga som samma år hade debatterats i riksdagen. Hon bemöter här den då vanligt förekommande uppfattningen att lagstiftningen inte skulle få styra äktenskapet. Hon menar att detta vore idealiskt, men att lagstiftning krävs för att motverka de brister som då förelåg; att kvinnan, liksom mannen, måste betraktas som ”en fullmyndig människa”, med rätten att ”bestämma över sig och sitt”. Hon återkommer till ämnet i skriften Om äganderätt och myndighet för den gifta kvinnan (1888), där hon vidareutvecklar sina tankar.

Eller skulle hon tillerkännas alla sina rättigheter men ändå övertalas att stanna i "det lugna hemmet" som makens tjänarinna?
