This book is an outgrowth of an international conference – The Black Body: Imagining, Writing, and Re(Reading) – held at DePaul University, Chicago in 2004. The various contributing authors critically examine the changing discourses on the black body to address how it has been constituted as a site for construction and maintenance of social and political power. Drawing examples from Europe, Africa, the United States as well as other places in the Black Diaspora, the subject matter in this book discusses the raced, gendered, classed and culturally produced discourses about the black body. Through its examination of these and related issues, this book contributes to a dialogue across various disciplines about the black body, its meanings and negotiations as read, interpreted, and imagined in different frames of perception and imagination.Print editions not for sale in Sub-Saharan Africa. The African National Congress (ANC) is the oldest and most durable of African nationalist movements, not only in South Africa but also across the continent. Since 1994, it has governed the country as leader of the Tripartite Alliance with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and South African Communist Party (SACP). The early decades of the twentieth century saw the establishment, survival, and growth of ANC and black labour organisations. This book focuses on the formative period of engagement of these political and socioeconomic forces before permanent alliances emerged. It analyses the ANC’s attitudes and relationships with the nascent formations of the black working class, with particular attention to the most conscious and active workers. The subject matter in this book also discusses migrant, rural, domestic, and women workers – not always then clearly defined as part of a formal ‘working class’.Print editions not for sale in Sub-Saharan Africa. This book provides a detailed account of the history, consequences, and events leading up to the ‘Inkathagate Scandal’ which changed the course of South African history. It states that Inkathagate was the work of one man – Brian Morrow – who outraged by the racism, corruption and torture rife in the Security Branch of the South African Police in Durban where he worked, resolved to do something to expose the reality of apartheid hidden from white South Africa and the world. It also discusses the Inkatha files, which Morrow had covertly copied and handed to the media in 1991, and also analyses Morrow’s purpose, ambitions, and what followed after.Print editions not for sale in Sub-Saharan Africa.
