This volume represents a valuable collective contribution to the research and development of database systems. This volume contains the proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFAA '97). DASFAA '97 focused on advanced database technologies and their applications. The 55 papers in this volume cover a wide range of areas in the field of database systems and applications - including the rapidly emerging areas of the Internet, multimedia, and document database systems - and should be of great interest to all database system researchers and developers, and practitioners.

This volume contains results of database research related to cooperative databases, with emphasis on four Japanese database-related projects, some of which are open to foreign researchers. They are Advanced Databases, Human Media Project, Genome Research and Meme Media. This volume is a progress report on the project Research and Development of Advanced Database Systems for Integration of Media and User Environments, supported by the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture of Japan. It investigates research on new database systems due to the recent development of network technology; a clearer picture of integration by database technology is drawn as a result.
