As these studies are of essentially international character, many international conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops are held every year. To publish proceedings of these meetings is of course important for tracing development of various disciplines of earth and plane tary sciences though publishing is fast getting to be an expensive business. It is my pleasure to learn that the Center for Academic Publications Japan and the Japan Scientific Societies Press have agreed to undertake the publication of a series "Advances in Earth and Planetary Sciences" which should certainly become an important medium for conveying achievements of various meetings to the aca demic as well as non-academic scientific communities. It is planned to publish the series mostly on the basis of proceedings that appear in the Journal of Geomagnetism and Geoelectricity edited by the Society 'Of Terrestrial Magnetism and Electricity of Japan, the Journal of Physics of the Earth by the Seismological SOCiety of Japan and the Volcanological Society of Japan, and the Geochemical Journal by the Geochemical Society of Japan, although occasional volumes of the series will include independent proceedings. Selection of meetings, of which the proceedings will be included in the series, will be made by the Editorial Committee for which I have the honour to work as the General Editor.

The contents of this volume are based on the U.S.-Japan Seminar on the Dynamics of the Middle Atmosphere, held at the East-West Center of the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii, 8-12 November 1982. The seminar was jointly sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The participants included eleven scientists from the U.S.A., eleven from Japan, and one from Australia. In recent decades the meteorology of the middle atmosphere has become a subject of increasing research activity. Much of this acti vity has been stimulated by concern about possible anthropogenic per turbations of the stratospheric ozone layer, and also possible linkages with climatic fluctuations. Observational and theoretical efforts to study the dynamics, physics, and chemistry of the middle atmosphere have recently intensified on an international basis with the beginning of the Middle Atmosphere Program (MAP). Thus the Seminar was very timely.

Accretion-collision tectonics in mobile belts is one of the most important new topics in solid earth science. A special seminar on this subject, the Oji International Seminar on Accretion Tectonics, was held from the 10th to 16th September, 1981, in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan. It was sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Fujihara Foundation of Science, organizers were S. Uyeda, Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo, Amos Nur, Department of Geophysics, Stanford University, and M. Hashimoto, Department of Geology, National Science Museum, Tokyo. More than fifty geoscientists, thirty from Japan and twenty from abroad, met together to present findings from their recent studies and exchange ideas about accretion-collision phenomena in the circum-Pacific mobile belts. Two field days were also spent in the Horokanai area, central Hokkaido, to examine and the Horokanai ophiolite. The the Kamuikotan high-pressure metamorphic rocks latter is a fragment of ancient ocean floor crust that has been obducted onto the Kamuikotan rocks at the time of collision of the Okhotsk Micro-continent with Asia. The seminar was by no means a large congress. However, to the best of our knowledge, it was the first international conference on accretion-collision tectonics. The meeting was highly successful and we believe that it has opened an important new era in the study of plate tectonics.

The ten invited papers presented at the Symposium on The Role of Ion Composition in Understanding Magnetospheric Processes, which was held on 11 August 1981 in Edinburgh, Scotland, have formed the principal basis for this book. The symposium was a part of the Fourth Scientific Assembly of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy and was convened by the Division III Working Group on Composition of Hot Magnetospheric Plasma under the co chairmanship of Dr. Gerhard Haerendel and myself. The symposium papers have been expanded and are supplemented in this book by several additional papers to provide a more comprehensive topical review and a current status report on experimental and theoretical research that relate to our present understanding of the energetic ion composition in Earth's magnetosphere. Thus, the papers include new results as well as a review of published results, with rather extensive reference lists, in the hope that this collection will be useful both for information on current research activities as well as a somewhat lasting topical resource for the space science community.

The international tsunami symposium convened by the Tsunami Commission of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics was held during May 25-28, 1981 at Send ai, Of un a to and Kamaishi, North East Honshu, Japan. This symposium was organized by the Japanese National Committee for the Organization of International Tsunami Symposium, 1981. The opening and closing ceremonies of the symposium were held at Sendai and Kamaishi, respectively, and eight sessions at Sendai and two sessions at Of una to were arranged. About 140 scientists and engineers including accompanied persons from ten countries participated to make the symposium a great success. In all, 55 papers were submitted prior to the opening of the symposium, of which 54 papers being orally presented, were arranged in ten sessions: Tsunami source and earthquake, warning system Tsunami waves and spectra Tsunami potential estimation Theoretical arguments on tsunami waves Tsunami generation and numerical simulation of historical tsunamis Harbor oscillations by long waves and tsunamis (1) Tsunami run up Mitigation of tsunami hazards and socio-economic effects Harbor oscillations by long waves and tsunamis (2) Historical study of tsunamis. Besides, two special popular lectures were provided for about 800 citizens in the Sanriku coastal area at Of una to Nokyo Kaikan, where the 1960 Chilean tsunami caused great destructive damages. The title of the first lecture was on the 1960 Chilean Earthquake and Tsunami by Dr.

The contents of this volume are based largely on a symposium on cloud dynamics held in Hamburg, Germany, as a part of the Third General Assembly of the International Association of Mete- orology and Atmospheric Physics (IAMAP), 17-28 August-1981. Plans for this symposium were initiated by the Cloud Dynamics Group, appointed through the International Commission for Dynam- ic Meteorology (ICDM), IAMAP. Members of this group are Bruce Morton - Chairman, Australia; Tomio Asai - Secretary, Japan; E. M. Agee, USA; V. Andreyev, Bulgaria; K. Fradrich, FRG; M. W. Moncrieff, UK; R. S. Pastushkov, USSR; J. P. Chao, PR China; Bh. V. Ramanamurti, India; W. Roach, UK; J. Simpson, USA; J. T. Steiner, New Zealand; M. Yanai, USA. E. M. Agee served as con- vener of the symposium in Hamburg. Dynamic meteorology has grown rapidly and covered a great variety of fields since the foundation of ICDM, making it increas- ingly difficult for the Commission to manage all activities. In order to improve this situation, some ad-hoc Working Groups within ICDM were organized at the 1977 IAMAP meeting in Seattle.Each of these working groups, such as the one in Cloud Dynamics, deals with a particular sub-field of dynamic meteorology.

The ocean floor spreading theory was proposed during 1961 and 62 by Robert Dietz and Harry Hess. This concept was a revolutionary one, and renewed the scientists thoughts on the dynamics of the ocean bottom. Then, for example, the coincidence of the Wadati-Benioff Zone with the subduction zone proposed by new concept was well understood. Further development of the ocean floor spreading theory was the proposal of new concept "plate tectonics" proposed by Xavier LePichon and by a few others during 1967 and 68. This new idea could solve the various conflicts involved in the "ocean floor spreading theory". Therefore, today, scientists understand that the plate tectonics theory was born by the ocean floor spreading theory, which is able to cover the weak points of the latter. D/V Glomar Challenger started her Leg Ion 20 July, 1968 from Orange, Texas to implement the Deep Sea Drilling Project. The timing almost coincided with the proposal period of the plate tectonics. After carrying out a few legs of the drilling operations, the results obtained by D I V Glomar Challenger well proved the rightness of the newly proposed theories of the ocean floor spreading and the plate tectonics. For us, the successful processes started by the ocean floor spreading theory, improved by the concept of plate tectonics and proved by the DSDP results have been a golden monument in the field of earth sciences probably for several centuries.

Computer simulation is now widely recognized as a powerful tool and useful method at the current stage of research in space plasma physics. The expected role of computer simulation is to bridge the existing gap between theories and experiments/observations and to give a profound physical insight into highly tangled and nonlinearly coupled space plasma phenomena. One of the goals of space plasma physics in 1980's and 1990's is to elucidate the quantitative causal relationships of global and local energy flows in space plasma environment and establish the space plasma physics via cooperative studies among three important elements of observations, theories and computer simulations. Based on such recognition, Dr. M. Ashour-Abdalla (UCLA/USA), Dr. R. Gendrin (CNET/FRANCE) and both of us met together at the 20th General Assembly of URSI at Washington D. C. in 1981 to discuss what we should do and what we could do, reaching a conclusion that it is time to establish an International School of Space Simulations (ISSS). The objectives of the ISSS thus organized are firstly to educate and stimulate graduate students and young sCientists, secondly to exchange information on updated simulation techniques and thirdly to have mutual discussions among observational, theoretical and simulational scientists in the field of space physics. The first ISSS were organized by Prof. P. Coleman, Prof. T. Obayashi, Dr. H. Okuda in addition to the above four members. The first ISSS was held at Kansai Seminar House in Kyoto from Nov. I to Nov. 12, 1982.
