From Biblical Israel to Modern Judaism

Jewish Religious Architecture explores ways that Jews have expressed their tradition in brick and mortar and wood, in stone and word and spirit. This volume stretches from the biblical Tabernacle to Roman Jerusalem, synagogues spanning two Millenia and on to contemporary Judaism. Social historians, cultural historians, art historians and philologists have come together here to present this extraordinary architectural tradition. The multidisciplinary approach employed in Jewish Religious Architecture reveals deep continuities over time, together with the distinctly local— sometimes in surprising ways.

Eliezer-Zusman of Brody: The Early Modern Synagogue Painter and His World discusses Jewish cultural and artistic migration from Eastern Europe to German lands in the first half of the eighteenth century. Focusing on Eliezer-Zusman of Brody, who painted synagogues in the Franconia area, hitherto neglected biographical aspects and work methods of religious artisans in Eastern and Central Europe during the early modern period are revealed. What begins as a study of synagogue paintings in Franconia presents an unexpectedly intensive glimpse into the lives and sacred products of painters at the periphery of Jewish Ashkenazi existence.

Tango of Death: The Creation of a Holocaust Legend

A legend that captures the imagination of audiences and shapes representations of the Holocaust is that in Nazi concentration camps Jewish musicians were forced to play a Tango of Death as men, women and children made their way to the gas chambers. This book traces the origins of this legend to a little known concentration camp in Ukraine where musicians were forced to perform a Jewish tango at executions before they themselves were murdered. By reconstructing the creation of this legend, the book shows how the actual history is hidden, distorted, or even lost altogether.

Jewish Archaeology
The Christian Discovery of Jewish Catacombs in Rome

This study examines how various catacomb networks in Rome were eliminated and subsequently restored to the historical record as specifically Jewish sites. By exploring the evolution, interpretation and presentation of these catacombs from ancient times to the present, it offers fresh insights into their historical significance and the impact they have had on later generations. Understanding how this situation relates to the broader context of archaeological activity in Rome also highlights important changes in the study of catacombs during the nineteenth century that led to the identification of additional Jewish catacombs and other material evidence of Jews in Ancient Rome.

Story in Fiction and Film of French Collaboration in the Occupation and Complicity in the Holocaust (1940-1944)
German Occupation, Vichy, and Truth
Inbunden, Engelska, 2025

Skickas inom 3-6 vardagar
This book examines fiction and film narratives that show the active collaboration of the Vichy government with the Nazis in the deportation and murder of the Jews of France. It also explains how these fiction and film narratives affected the official and dominant historical narrative of the 1940-44 Occupation years.More than anything, what changed the dominant narrative of the Occupation years are documentaries and creative works which imaginatively selected and arranged the presentation of neglected and suppressed facts. By stressing how documentaries, novels, and imaginative films changed the dominant narrative of 1940-1944, the author is also arguing how cultural production transformed history.

Devoted Resistance
Jewish Feminist Art in the US and Israel
Inbunden, Engelska, 2025

What is Jewish-feminist art, and how does it contribute to the spaces of art, society, and religion? Devoted Resistance examines the nature, methods of operation, and contribution of the feminist art movement, which has developed in traditional Jewish spheres since the late 1990s in the two major Jewish centers – the United States and Israel. The book analyzes critical Jewish feminist art and the different fields in which it operates; it explores the interrelationships between feminist Jewish art and feminist theories; the connection between critical discourse and feminist activism in observant Jewish worlds; and feminist artists and artwork in these spaces. Devoted Resistance highlights aspects common to feminist Jewish artists who create from traditional spheres and amalgamate the “social” with the “theological,” connecting private experience with community existence. It offers new and vital contextual understandings regarding the relationship between feminist art and Jewish Identity, illuminating their relationship through Jewish religion rather than merely Jewish ethnicity. By doing so, the book demonstrates how art, theology, feminism, and critical thinking interwind.
