This book critically examines the making and persistence of impoverished areas at the margins of Romanian cities since the late 1980s. Through their historical outlook on political economy and social policy, combined with media and discourse analysis, the eight essays of Racialized Labour in Romania forge new and cutting-edge perspectives on how social class formation, spatial marginalization and racialization intersect. Using mixed qualitative and quantitative methods, the study identifies neighborhood risk factors undermining students’ academic success, along with the positive effects of churches and service centers as mitigating forces. The authors focus on a range of topics and issues including market competition, urban decline, community resources, testing and accountability, smaller schools, and engaged learning. The volume illustrates how action studies by engaged scholars working with community activists empowers students to overcome emerging barriers.

According to Notaro, the failure to extend equitable civil and political rights to LGBT individuals—combined with recent reversal of past gains—will continue to be associated with bias, stigma and discrimination toward the LGBT community. In turn, this sustained bias and stigma fosters a host of LGBT health disparities, including access to culturally competent health care, HIV/AIDS, substance use, homelessness, suicide, and violence. Thus, the bias and discrimination levied at the LGBT community is discussed as a major explanatory factor in life-threatening health disparities experienced by the community, particularly in urban areas worldwide. This book examines the increasing marginalization of and response by people living in urban areas throughout the Western Hemisphere, and both the local and global implications of continued colonial racial hierarchies and the often-dire consequences they have for people perceived as different. However, in the aftermath of recent U.S. elections, whiteness also seems to embody strictures on religion, ethnicity, country of origin, and almost any other personal characteristic deemed suspect at the moment. For that reason, gender, race, and even class, collectively, may not be sufficient units of analysis to study the marginalizing mechanisms of the urban center. The authors interrogate the social and institutional structures that facilitate the disenfranchisement or downward trajectory of groups, and their potential or subsequent lack of access to mainstream rewards. The book also seeks to highlight examples where marginalized groups have found ways to assert their equality. No recent textshave attempted to connect the mechanisms of marginality across geographical and political boundaries within the Western Hemisphere.

Chapters highlight critical collaborations across student affairs and academic affairs, and delve into milestones addressing access, retention, engagement, and thriving within distinctive institutional types (e.g., research, liberal arts, community colleges, Minority Serving Institutions). Authors also explore the nuanced changes occurring against the contemporary backdrop of COVID-19 experiences – including the rise of anti-Asian racism, the salience of implicit biases, and the disparate access to and impacts of health services. This book focuses on urban redevelopment and neighborhood gentrification in three global contexts: New York City (USA), London (UK) and Seoul (South Korea). It examines the processes and challenges that impact the various constituencies who live and work in these different global neighborhoods, in comparative contexts. In so doing, the authors explore the complexities wrought by our global economy through globalization and competition, and the rapid pace of urbanization, as they impact urban redevelopment and neighborhood gentrification in global cities. While all societies seek to advance, the volume’s recurring question is cui bono, who benefits from modern day urban redevelopment and neighborhood gentrification, irrespective of geographical setting, and raises the question, ‘but, where are the poor to live?’

Within the context of W.E.B. Du Bois’ question “How does it feel to be a problem?”, this volume examines the “problem” using a phenomenological approach, that is to say, in terms of one’s experience of such. More specifically, the author explores three points: the Black person’s experience of being a problem for White America; her experience of White America as a problem or obstacle for their survival and ability to thrive; and her experience of navigating, negotiating and surviving a world that is presented as a duality. This book deconstructs the world(s) that the Black person experiences by first understanding her as a “Dasein” (the Heideggerian concept of a being that is aware of its being in the world and aware of other beings that are in the world it experiences). In considering the Black person as a Dasein, the author affirms the intrinsic value of her being and, therefore, validates the experience she has of the world in which she finds herself. Finally, this volume incorporates Emmanuel Levinas’ philosophy of the face and Paul Ricoeur’s study of the self to help craft an understanding of the ontology of human relationship to support the advocacy for an ethical encounter between the Black person and those whom she encounters in both the Black world and the White world in which she must navigate and concurrently exist.
