Delve into the award-winning Catalan architecture studio’s unique combination of material craft and avant-garde dynamismArgentinian architect Ricardo Flores (born 1965) and Spanish architect Eva Prats (born 1965) began their artistic partnership with the foundation of their studio in Barcelona in 1998. Since its conception, Flores & Prats has operated according to a design ethos that fuses craft with academia, approaching research and scholarship as a living practice that must result in the responsibility to make and to build. The studio has taken on a variety of projects with diverse functions in social housing, public spaces and university workshops. This volume compiles photography and analysis of Flores & Prats’ best-known projects, such as the Museum of the Mills, Campus Microsoft Italia, and the New Theater Sala Beckett. Also included are examinations of the studio’s experiments with portability, their use of film as a vehicle for architectural documentation and their recent menus of edible architecture created for special exhibitions in Barcelona and Copenhagen. Readers are guided through every stage of a single project’s evolution from early sketches to detailed models to final construction. In addition to reproductions of such process material, Thought by Hand includes writing by a variety of artists influenced by Flores & Prats, including the Sala Beckett theater’s director Toni Casares and renowned urban planner Manuel de Solà-Morales.

Sketches, essays, projects and more from the Houston-based architect and professorCosta Rican American architect Carlos Jiménez (born 1959) pursues scholarship through design—integrating drawing and writing with the making of buildings and architectural spaces. In 1983, he established Houston–based Carlos Jiménez Studio, an innovative design practice that focuses on the endurance and refinement of form and space. Jiménez was a long-term (2001–11) jury member of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This book is a 35-year journey through Jiménez’s career, exploring the discipline of architecture through practice and teaching, but also through writings, drawings and buildings. A curated collection of his essays, written from 1989 to the present day, reflect on outstanding cities, architects and buildings around the world: from New York to Houston, from Erik Gunnar Asplund to Luis Barragán, and from the Kimbell Art Museum to the Crowley House, among others.

From Duchamp's readymade to a tamale street vendor—Montiel's artist's book investigates the regenerative potential of everyday objects In her practice, Mexican architectural designer Rozana Montiel (born 1972) takes social, environmental and infrastructural action by creatively repurposing "things" already on hand. She operates on the premise that cities collect objects, subjects and situations that together articulate stories of everyday life. This artist's book explores ideas on how to work with the scale of the object as well as its resonance with the scale of the city to build artifacts, or "ART IF ACTS," out of recycled materials, discarded playstuff, low-cost elements and readymades.Art (if) Act begins with an interview and a glossary of terms relevant to Montiel's project—such as "Resignify," "Serious-fun" and "Upcycle"—establishing a working lexicon through which she generates new perspectives. The book then transitions into an exploratory survey of repurposed objects from the past to the present, from the rarified sphere of avant-garde art to the terrain of commerce on the streets of Mexico City.
