The process, informed by complex construction and design techniques, manifests in larger-than-life metal sculptures and small elaborate works of paper, taking inspiration from years of craftsmanship and historical concepts. In all his works, Hesamiyan boldly strips away layers of recognisable ornamentation to reveal a minimal core at the heart of all forms.

This monograph surveys two decades of studio and archival material, sculpture, drawing and ambitious installation plans, supported by an introduction and two essays, not only providing a rich overview of Hesamiyan’s practice, but also a better understanding of contemporary art from Iran.

March Avery: A Life in Color is the first monograph on the New York-based painter March Avery. Documenting the artist’s practice of more than 80 years, the book features three newly commissioned texts and some 200 images.

Avery was born in 1932 to the painters Milton Avery and Sally Michel, and began painting as a child. As she says, “I think I was painting in utero.” The dividing line between life and art was blurred during her upbringing, as is reflected in the subject matter of her work: everyday domestic scenes, portraits of friends and family members, and landscapes visited and revisited over the course of a lifetime.

Avery’s oil paintings, sketches and watercolors are known for their flat picture planes, interlocking shapes and simplicity of forms. The artist’s mastery of colour brings life, immediacy of place and emotional depth to her compositions, as March Avery: A Life in Color illustrates, beautifully.

The book also includes articles by writers/critics Johanna Fateman, Lynne Tillman and John Yau, whose texts explore and animate Avery’s life and work.

Hardeep Pandhal: Inheritance Quest is the first monograph on Hardeep Pandhal, whose practice concerns the unsettling and transformative forces of migration, historical violence and cultural assimilation. Including images of the artist’s key works and QR links to view key videos online, this book offers multiple ways into his complex, multi-layered practice. 

The Glasgow-based artist works with an unusual fluency across various media, including rap, animations, embroidered jumpers knitted by his mum, sensitively rendered drawings of unsettling characters, airbrush paintings and installations. These works reference genres across a vast landscape of popular culture, from video games to cartoons, and from fantasy lore and mystical poetry to gothic horror and steampunk. 

In this book, Pandhal builds a luridly rendered world where the ghosts of empire slink alongside narratives of Tolkienesque fantasy; where game designer Hideo Kojima’s Solid Snake shares a backseat with an Uber Eats bag; and where personal memories of racist invective are untwisted into sinuous renderings of the headless figures of Sikh martyr Baba Deep Singh, or tottering troops of British-Indian sepoys. 

Beneath the surface of his visually seductive yet often disturbing imagery lies a lyrical ambition and allusive power that is literary in quality. Whether exploring the libidinal and orgiastic energies of empire, or the fantastical elements of his practice, Pandhal adeptly riffs on the immigrant experience in modern Britain. Hilary Harkness: Everything For You is the first comprehensive monograph on the artist’s work. 

Known for her irreverent, provocative and meticulously crafted paintings, Harkness employs historic world events and art history as jumping off points from which to explore power dynamics and struggles through an intersectional lens.

A queer Midwesterner from a family with working class origins, Harkness has lived in coastal cities (San Francisco, New York) for the majority of her life. She is married to an African American woman who shares her interest in art and literature. These life experiences are infused throughout her works, even as they defy pure autobiographical interpretation. The worlds that unfold on Harkness’s canvases teem with the inescapable human foibles that plague each of us, making it relatable and resonant with viewers across a broad and global spectrum.
