Having obtained a first class degree in mathematics from Wadham College, Oxford, Walter Waddingham Shirley (1828-66) taught mathematics there before turning his attention to ecclesiastical history. Shirley earned a reputation amongst his contemporaries as an objective researcher with a clear writing style, and he was considered one of the ablest of the new Oxford historians. The Fasciculi, first published in 1858, is a collection of documents relating to John Wycliffe and his followers. The earliest texts reproduced in this volume are three partial determinations against Wycliffe dating from the fourteenth century. The latest document dates from the trial in 1428 of the Lollard William White. Shirley successfully proved in his introduction that the documents, originally attributed to the Carmelite friar Thomas Netter of Walden, were compiled after Netter's death. Shirley also argued that Wycliffe was originally a constitutional rather than a theological reformer, which provoked criticism from reviewers.

The Franciscan Roger Bacon (c.1214-92?) was one of the most significant intellectuals of the thirteenth century. His most important work was the Opus Majus of 1267 (also available in this series). The works included in this volume, edited by J. S. Brewer, had not previously been published, and only one volume of the unpublished works ever appeared, because of Brewer's other commitments. The Opus Minus was a précis of the larger work, written at the same time. The Opus Tertium, written the following year, was Bacon's attempt to cover topics which he felt had been omitted, or inadequately explained, in the previous versions; it also includes autobiographical information. Neither the Opus Minus or Opus Tertium survive in their entirety, but Brewer includes all the parts known in 1859. The Compendium Philosophiae deals with Bacon's wide-ranging intellectual interests in all aspects of medieval scholarship.

Written c.1290, this chronicle follows the pattern of similar texts in recording historical events through using earlier sources; but, by adapting and editing what he chose to include, the author produced a unique work. He is able to provide greater depth and detail to the descriptions of events closer to his own time, yet the text finishes abruptly in a passage concerning the contemporary theologian Robert of Winchelsea. Published in the Rolls Series in 1859, the work was edited by Henry Ellis (1777-1869), the librarian of the British Museum. Topics covered in the chronicle include Henry II's crowning of his eldest son as 'Henry III', and their joint rule until the latter rebelled against his father; the 'extreme cruelty with which the Jews were treated in England'; and 'an occurrence which continued ... to our own time, namely, the inundation of Westminster Hall by the River Thames'.

The Corporation of London has an extensive collection of medieval records which can be used to trace the development of the City, and provide much information of all aspects of civic life - social, economic, political, ecclesiastical, legal and military. H. T. Riley (1816-78) spent many years editing and translating some of the most significant documents, and thereby establishing his scholarly reputation. Volume 1 of this three-volume work, published in 1859, contains one of the most important collections of documents, the four books of the Liber Albus. This was compiled in 1419 by the Town Clerk, John Carpenter, and is considered one of the first books of English common law. It records the laws and civic regulations relating to the City of London, beginning in 1067 but concentrating on the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It is written mostly in Latin, with parts in French.

First published together in 1858, these three memoirs of Henry V provided Victorian historians and politicians with a valuable account of the 'actions, motives, and career' of the second monarch of the House of Lancaster. The work is compiled and edited by Charles Augustus Cole (fl.1850-60) as part of the Rolls Series. Prefaced by an introduction to the contributing biographers, Robert Redmayne, Thomas of Eltham, and an anonymous member of the royal household, the collection contributes much to our understanding of early fifteenth-century court life. Presenting the King variously as a philosopher, a pious but mildly eccentric benefactor of the Church, and finally, as a zealous and aggressive political strategist, the biographies reveal the many public and private faces of this medieval monarch, though, interestingly, none of them places much stress on the victory at Agincourt in 1415 for which (thanks to Shakespeare) he is principally remembered today.

With his decisive victory at the Battle of Bosworth Field (1485), Henry VII ended the Wars of the Roses and famously delivered peace to a war-ravaged England. Ever since, his life and court have attracted the attention of commentators, historians and strategists. Described by the The Examiner as a 'store of welcome gossip', this 1858 collection of documents pertaining to the first Tudor monarch swiftly became popular, and could be found on the bookshelves of scholars and politicians alike. Compiled, translated and edited by the archivist and historian James Gairdner for the Rolls Series, the work contains a variety of ambassadors' reports on foreign rulers including the Kings of Aragon, Castile and Naples. Transcribed in their original Latin, with English translations and commentary provided by Gairdner, these accounts reveal the origins of international relationships that would influence the policy of Henry's descendants for centuries.

Thomas of Elmham (1364-1427?) was treasurer of St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, when he compiled this work, which he called the Speculum Augustinianum, around 1414. He planned to give a complete history of the Abbey, and the chronological table covers the period from 597 to 1414, but the main text ends in 806, with a collection of documentary sources from the period 1066 to 1191 appended. His failure to complete the work was probably due to his appointment as Prior of the Cluniac House at Lenton in Nottinghamshire. Elmham made great use of documentary sources in the Abbey's famous library, reproducing and editing original charters, as well as using the work of earlier historians of the House, though, unfortunately, many of the sources he uses were forgeries or corrupt transcripts, produced to support the Abbey's claims to royal and ecclesiastical privileges. This edition by Charles Hardwick was published in 1858.

John Capgrave (1393-1464) was the Prior of Bishop's Lynn, and the most learned Augustinian friar of his time. Although he was the author of forty-one scholarly works, only twelve survive. This work was dedicated to King Henry VI and chronicles the lives of other great Henries, including six emperors of Germany and six kings of England (including the dedicatee himself). Largely compilations of other sources, his extensive accounts demonstrate the breadth of the scholarship for which he was known. This annotated edition was commissioned as part of the Rolls Series, a project designed, in an early campaign for ease of access to scholarly material, to put more historical sources into print. Edited by F. C. Hingeston and first published in 1858, it includes Capgrave's full Latin text and a glossary, thorough biographical notes, and chapter-by-chapter summaries, offering a useful resource for students of medieval history.

It was continued by several authors, indicating that it was accepted as a definitive account of the formation of Scottish national identity, though, inevitably, many of the earlier parts rely on legend and tradition rather than on historical sources. Dedicated to James V, it is biased in favour of his ancestors, and, via Holinshed, was the source for Shakespeare's Macbeth. This verse translation was completed for James V by the courtier William Stewart in 1535, but not published until the Rolls Series edition by W. B. Turnbull in 1858. Volume 1 contains Books I-VI and covers wars with the Romans and Irish migration to Scotland.

This two-volume work forms part of a series of scholarly editions, commissioned by the Master of the Rolls, of unpublished chronicles and other original documents relating to Early English history. The documents are reprinted in Latin or Middle English, and are summarised by the editors, whose invaluable prefaces places them in historical context and describe the location and condition of the original manuscripts. Volume 1 (1858) contains documents relating to the earliest establishment of the Franciscan Order. The treatise De adventu of Thomas of Eccleston (fl. c.1231-58), is the only eyewitness source of the settlement and progress of the friars in England; and the letters of the renowned Franciscan scholar, Adam de Marisco (or Marsh, c.1200-59), are important examples of early Franciscan organisation. The volume closes with the register of the establishment of the Minorites in London, and an appendix of other original documents.

This volume in the Rolls Series, published in 1858, includes three of the most important sources for the life of Edward the Confessor. The Vita 'dwardi was written c.1067 and was used as a source by notable chroniclers such as William of Malmesbury and Ailred of Rievaulx. The author declares his purpose in honouring Queen Edith, and the Godwin family are given prominence alongside Edward. Ailred completed a life of Edward for the translation of his relics in 1163, and the Vita Beati is 'a sort of abridged versification', produced for Henry VI c.1440. The Anglo-Norman poem, La Estoire de Seint Aedward, now attributed to Matthew Paris, was written c.1245 and the editor (Henry Luard, 1825-91) includes a translation, glossary and descriptions of the numerous illustrations at the head of the manuscript. These three sources remain vital to our understanding of the final years of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom.

In his prefaces to the Latin text, Stevenson discusses the manuscript sources as well as the context of the monastery's development. He goes on to describe the influence of Christianity and the monastic system on such areas as agriculture and commerce. Volume 2, which begins with the Norman Conquest, includes a life of the tenth-century abbot and saint Ethelwold, among other appendices, as well as helpful glossaries, chronological lists of documents and an index to both volumes.

Sir Thomas Duffus Hardy (1804-78) was Deputy Keeper of the Public Record Office. He was closely involved with the Rolls Series of publications of medieval manuscripts in public ownership, of which this catalogue (consisting of three volumes in four parts) forms part. His stated aim was to list 'all the known sources, printed or unprinted, of English history'. Each item is located and described and where Hardy has examined the original, the first and last lines are given. Where known, the author's life is briefly outlined. The third volume, published in 1871, provides historical sources ranging from 1200 (the first full year of King John's reign) to the death of Edward II in 1327. This volume features 20 plates illustrating some of the types of manuscripts catalogued. A fourth volume, left uncompleted at Hardy's death, was to have continued the catalogue to the end of Henry VII's reign (1509).

Published as part of the Rolls Series in 1861, these collected letters date mainly from 1235-53, when, as bishop of Lincoln, their author presided over the largest diocese in England. Both a scientist and a theologian, Robert Grosseteste (c.1170-1253) boasts what the medieval historian R. W. Southern describes as 'a rarely paralleled breadth of intellectual interests'. His letters are invaluably illustrative of the social conditions of the time. He writes heatedly and earnestly on such topics as the laws concerning illegitimacy, the condition of the Jews and the liberties of the Church, with a violence of opinion that was 'balanced, indeed prompted, by a deep concern for the souls of ordinary people'. Henry Richards Luard (1825-91) puts Grosseteste's writing into context in his preface, while useful summaries of each letter in the contents list, and commentary provided in the side-notes, make the Latin text accessible to modern readers.
