Integrated Land Use and Transport Modelling
Decision Chains and Hierarchies

The integration of the location of activities in space and the use of transport has been a theoretical planning issue for many years. However, most books on this subject treat each component of the land use and transportation system with different, sometimes even conflicting, theories. The purpose of this book is to present the issue in the light of a single and consistent theoretical framework, that of random utility theory and discrete choice models. This is achieved in a methodical way, reviewing microeconomic theory related to the use of space, spatial interaction models, entropy maximising models, and finally, random utility theory. Emphasis is given to the concepts of decision chains and hierarchies. Spatial input-output models are also discussed, followed by chapters specifically dealing with the location of activities, the land market and the transport system. The book ends with the description of a number of real case studies to show how the theory can be used in practice.

This is a digitally reprinted edition of Urban Space and Structures, first published in 1972. This first volume in the Cambridge Urban and Architectural Studies series is a compilation outlining the growth of a particular line of research work which was taking place at the Centre for Land Use and Built Form Studies in Cambridge at the time. It attempted to understand some of the factors which, at a theoretical level, condition the range of choices that are available, whether in a building, the nodal point in a city or the complete urban system.

Bruno Taut and the Architecture of Activism
Häftad, Engelska, 2010

Bruno Taut was the leading architectural theorist in Germany during the years 1914-1920. The architectural and social premises which he developed in this seminal period were to be of paramount importance in the subsequent development of modern architecture in Germany in the 1920s. The German example, in turn, was to become a model for the international modern movement. Whereas the history of the modern movement in architecture has generally been written in terms of functionalism, and the availability of materials and technology, Dr Whyte suggests that many of the roots of modern architecture were mystical and irrational, and were concerned less with function and purpose and more with millenarian dreams of the a society which might be achieved through the meditation of the architecture. The author also suggests that there were political reasons behind this type of architecture and why it failed to achieve its aim of improving the physical and social condition of society.

The Movement for Housing Reform in Germany and France, 1840-1914
Häftad, Engelska, 2011

This book was originally published in 1985. During the 1920s and 1930s, a series of housing developments was built in Europe, based on unprecedented levels of public finance allied to innovative policies of planning, and architectural design. How did these developments, which were the foundation of later social housing programmes, come into being? This study sets out to answer the question by looking into the evolution of the movement for housing reform in Germany and France, from the middle of the nineteenth century until the outbreak of the First World War. This book also examines the social and political nature of 'the housing problem', and traces the response through a series of central themes: the public health campaign; land reform and planning proposals; the elaboration of architectural types; and the search for fresh means of financing the construction of cheap housing.

Urban Modelling
Algorithms, Calibrations, Predictions
Häftad, Engelska, 2010

Originally published in 1976, this book introduced a series of mathematical models of urban phenomena relevant to scientists and planners attempting to understand and predict the form of cities and regions. Dr Batty organises the book around the main theme of designing and using such models in practical situations and develops a family of static and dynamic models dealing with the location of land use and economic activities. He describes the models both as urban theories and as computer algorithms, and thoroughly explores the process of calibrating or 'tuning' the models to reflect reality. Problems concerning the definition of the spatial systems to which these models refer are examined, as are other practical difficulties such as data organisation. The quasi-experimental approach which characterises this style of computer model-building extends to using the models in conditional prediction and Dr Batty discusses their role in the planning process, with their use in testing the impact of public policies on existing conditions.

Originally published in 1976, The Architecture of Form is a collection of fourteen contributions by ten authors towards a quantitative approach to architectural design. The volume opens with an extended editorial introduction on the logic of design and the question of value, which places the papers into a decision-theoretic framework of descriptions, predictions and evaluations, and these are taken as the headings of the three parts of the volume. This book should be of wide interest to architects, building scientists, systems designers, operational research workers and computer scientists.

Modern Country Homes in England
The Arts and Crafts Architecture of Barry Parker

Barry Parker (1867-1944) was a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement in England. In partnership with Raymond Unwin he planned the world's first 'Garden City', at Letchworth, and London's Hampstead Garden Suburb. They also designed many individual houses and other buildings. In 1910 Parker began publication of a series of essays called 'Modern Country Homes in England' in The Craftsman, an influential American journal. It was his hope that these would be eventually collected together in book form, and would thus stand as a statement of his architectural beliefs. This volume, first published in 1986, is based upon these essays, and offers a critical evaluation of Parker's work. Many of the illustrations are taken from original drawings and photographs.

Incidence and Symmetry in Design and Architecture
Häftad, Engelska, 1983

The initial purposes of this 1983 text were to develop mathematical topics relevant to the study of the incidence and symmetry structures of geometrical objects and to expand the reader's geometric intuition. The two fundamental mathematical topics employed in this endeavor are graph theory and the theory of transformation groups. Part I, Incidence, starts with two sections on the basics of graph theory and continues with a variety of specific applications of graph theory. Following this, the text becomes more theoretical; here graph theory is used to study surfaces other than the plane and the sphere. Part II, Symmetry, starts with a section on rigid motions or symmetries of the plane, which is followed by another on the classification of planar patterns. Additionally, an overview of symmetry in three-dimensional space is provided, along with a reconciliation of graph theory and group theory in a study of enumeration problems in geometry.
