The articles in this collection create an interdisciplinary perspective. While attempting no unified vision, it approaches the subject from a variety of perspectives: aesthetics, psychology, sociology, ethnomusicology, compositional practice, and semiotics. While all composers are necessarily concerned with time, and while all theorists deal at least indirectly with music as a temporal phenomenon, the study of musical time has been fragmented. It is appropriate that no clear paradigm, model or direction has yet emerged in the study of muscial time, since time itself is both pervasive and elusive.

First Published in 1994. In their quest for new sound materials, avant-garde musicians often produce sounds which accidentally bear a strong resemblance to traditional instruments. While conventional Western instruments have taken on a functional role, instruments such as the shakuhachi are still closely associated with their cultural, religious, and historical roots. The colorful and unique shakuhachi has become the most widely known and used Japanese instrument. This collection provides a comprehensive historical overview of the shakuhachi, its technical aspects and its relationship to the flute.

First Published in 1994. The contributions to this collection have been selected to define a range of interests from the technical, aesthetic, cognitive and compositional spheres. The book addresses the continuing need for musicologists, psychologists, composers and listeners to enter into a creative dialogue with designers and builders, who are usually programmers in the contemporary world. The collection as a whole will help to demonstrate the great potential for exchange between the multidisciplinary approaches to music.

This anthology of writings about the American experimental composer Harry Partch is the most comprehensive collection of commentaries about the composer and his work ever assembled. Eleven major figures of contemporary music voice their views on Partch (1901-1974) and his radical contributions to twentieth-century music. These include composers and theorists who worked closely with him and important comments from his contemporaries and musical inheritors.
