This book analyses how Uzbekistan can boost sustainable economic growth to create more and better jobs.It considers how the country can consolidate achievements from recent policy reforms and maintain reform efforts to accelerate sustainable growth. Policy recommendations cover fostering macroeconomic stability, increasing investment in physical infrastructure, enhancing human capital, improving firms’ access to finance, and lowering barriers to international trade and foreign investment inflows.

This book explores issues relating to the role and performance of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, the People's Republic of China, and Viet Nam, with insights on evolving roles in the Republic of Korea.Each of the five developing member countries of ADB featured in this book provides a unique development context, but together they present a panoramic view of SOEs in the region. In the Republic of Korea, meanwhile, the evolving role of the public sector in various stages of SOE development is observed. The corporate governance framework is also highlighted in this book, as it posits that government agenda should focus on SOE reforms to promote the long-term productivity-induced growth that is essential to Asia’s transition to high-income status.

This report surveys the current state of civil service in Indonesia from a comprehensive, data-driven perspective and explores the current challenges facing the countryÕs bureaucracy.Modern civil service must be composed of competent, dedicated, and mission-driven public servants to harness opportunities and improve public service delivery with emerging technology. It also needs to proactively adapt and respond to evolving challenges. Based on the civil serviceÕs size and composition, data on public service delivery, and public opinion, the report identifies improvements necessary to increase the basic competencies of civil servants in the country.

This report explores potential links between the agriculture and tourism sectors that could strengthen infrastructure development and inclusive growth in the Lao People's Democratic Republic.Over the last 3 decades, the Lao People's Democratic Republic has seen remarkable economic growth, with per capita income quadrupling between 1989 and 2019. However, this growth has been accompanied by widening inequality as the economy generated limited job opportunities beyond agriculture. In the aftermath of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, this report emphasizes the need to develop synergies between agriculture and tourism. It recommends investing in infrastructure, human capital, and digital connectivity among other development areas in the country's agriculture and tourism sectors.

This country diagnostic assessment seeks to strengthen financial preparedness for disasters in Nepal, focusing on insurance and other risk transfer instruments. It explores the current application of disaster risk financing solutions by the government, businesses, and individual households; related demand and supply constraints; and opportunities for improvement. The assessment forms one of a series of country diagnostics undertaken using a common methodology to determine the state of the enabling environment for disaster risk financing.

The Kyrgyz Republic has overcome some complex challenges to now have one of the most open economies in Central Asia. The country has improved its per capita income and living standards and is on the threshold of becoming a lower-middle-income economy. Looking ahead, the main challenge for the Kyrgyz Republic is to build on these successes to stimulate stronger, more broad-based economic growth. This book identifies the economic and governance reforms needed within key sectors to drive this growth. It provides policy suggestions to enhance the country’s trade, agriculture, tourism, finance, information and communications technology, energy, transport and logistics, and human capital.
