This title will be presented as highly practical information pn pharmaceutical antiplatelet and anticoagulation therapy, written in a quick-access, no-nonsense format. The emphasis will be on a just-the-facts clinical approach, heavy on tabular material, light on dense prose. The involvement of the ISCP will ensure that the best quality contributors will be involved and establish a consistent approach to each topic in the series. Each volume is designed to be between 120 and 250 pages containing practical illustrations and designed to improve understand and practical usage of cardiovascular drugs in specific clinical areas.

Cardiovascular pharmacotherapy is a fast-moving and complex discipline within cardiology in general. New studies, trials and indications are appearing on a regular basis. This series, and this particular title within the series, is designed to establish the baseline level of knowledge that a cardiovascular professional needs to know on a day-to-day basis. The information within is designed to allow readers to learn quickly and with certainty the mode of action, the possible adverse effects, and the management of patients prescribed these drugs. The emphasis is on current practice, but with an eye to the near-future direction of treatment. This book is intended to update clinicians on recent data on the medical management of patients with Acute Coronary Syndromes. Alongside each book in the series, this title has been established to allow rapid publication of new editions to cover developments in the field.

The spectrum ofcardiovascular disease affecting women in pregnancy and postpartum is changingand differs between countries. In the western world, the risk of cardiovasculardisease in pregnancy has increased due to the increasing age at the firstpregnancy and the worldwide obesity epidemic leading also to early diabetes andhypertension. In addition the treatment of congenital heart disease hasimproved leading to an increased number of women with residual heart diseasereaching childbearing age. In the western world maternal heart disease is nowthe major cause of maternal death during pregnancy. In the developing worldrheumatic heart disease and the cardiomyopathies dominate. Those women oftenneed anticoagulation as they might have had a valve replacement or formed athrombus in the left heart. Drugs during pregnancy and the breastfeeding periodis a complex subject and there is a profound shortage of evidence basedrecommendations. As drug treatment in pregnancy concern the mother and thefetus optimum treatment of both must be targeted. This book aims at discussing the most important indications of drugusage in pregnancy and postpartum with the aim of weighing the potential riskof a drug and the possible benefit against each other.

The paradigm for atrial fibrillation (AF) management has changed significantly in recent years. A new era has begun for the prevention of one of the most tremendous complication of AF, stroke. Prevention of ischemic stroke in AF patients with oral anticoagulants represents a huge challenge because of the narrow therapeutic change of these drugs, interindividual and intraindividual variability, and the unsatisfactory time in therapeutically range (TTR) with this type of medication.New guidelines have emerged as a result of new mechanisms for initiation and perpetuation for pharmacotherapy to cure AF and trials with new classes of antithrombotic drugs are ongoing. The treatment of AF is still in its infancy, but recent research is revealing how it can be applied with optimal efficacy. This book assists trainees, recertifying physicians, practicing physicians and other professional staff in internal medicine, cardiology, emergency medicine, and clinical pharmacology to apply new diagnostic tools for selecting the best treatment options for AF patients.

This book is driven by the considerable progress made by novel imaging techniques in understanding the pathophysiology and evolution of aortic disease and its diagnosis. Despite the lack of symptoms in stable conditions, most aortic diseases have a high morbidity and mortality. New therapeutic strategies such as endovascular treatment and surgical techniques have appeared to improve conventional surgery in advanced phases of the disease, but until recently, medical treatment has focused on the control of cardiovascular risk factors using beta-blockers to reduce aortic wall stress by reducing blood pressure and heart rate.Pharmacotherapy in Aortic Disease updates the reader on the new medical treatment that are changing the natural history of these diseases. Leading experts have created a critical in-depth, yet concise, analysis of the available medical treatments for different aortic disease entities. Both basic research studies and clinical trials discussed in this book serve as a base for improving therapeutic management, delaying the need for surgery, and prolonging survival in these patients.

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and AT1 receptor antagonists have been proven to reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with left ventricular dysfunction or in those at high cardiovascular risk with preserved ventricular function.

This book is intended for general cardiologists and other physicians involved in the care of patients with chronic stable angina (CSA). The goal of this book is to update clinicians on recent data on the medical management of patients with CSA. Ischemic heart disease remains a major public health problem. Chronic stable angina is the initial manifestation of ischemic heart disease in approximately one half of patients. Stable coronary artery disease is generally characterized by episodes of reversible myocardial demand/supply mismatch, related to ischaemia or hypoxia, which are usually inducible by exercise, emotion or other stress and reproducible—but, which may also be occurring spontaneously. Such episodes of ischaemia/hypoxia are commonly associated with transient chest discomfort (angina pectoris). The aim of the management of CSA is to reduce symptoms and improve prognosis. The management of these patients encompasses lifestyle modification, control of coronary artery disease risk factors, evidence-based pharmacological therapy and patient education. All patients with stable angina should be offered optimal medical treatment, defined as one or two anti-anginal drugs as necessary, plus drugs for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Regarding the role of revascularization, randomised trials provide compelling evidence that myocardial revascularisation by coronary artery bypass grafting or by percutaneous coronary intervention improves symptoms of angina relative to continued medical treatment.

This volume reviews potential future therapies for heart failure, with a particular focus on ambulatory acute decompensated heart failure and the transitions from therapies in the acute setting to chronic management.Although in the developed world the incidence of and mortality from coronary heart disease and stroke have been declining over the last 15 years, heart failure is increasing in incidence, prevalence and overall mortality, despite advances in the diagnosis and management of the condition.Pharmacologic Trends of Heart Failure builds on the current understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms and insights gained from previous studies of therapeutic interventions. It is designed to establish the baseline level of knowledge that a cardiovascular professional needs to know on a day-to-day basis.
