The Wars of Alexander is a Middle English poem of the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century, preserved in part in two northern manuscripts, Bodley MS Ashmole 44 and Trinity College Dublin MS 213. It is based on the popular Latin account of Alexander the Great, the Historia de Preliis.The quality of The Wars of Alexander has been widely recognized, but this is the first critical edition, taking account of the readings of the two manuscripts, the relationship of the poem to its source, and the poet's metrical practice. The introduction discusses the manuscripts, the different versions of the Latin source, the metre of the poem, its language and dialect, and the editorial principles employed. The text is accompanied by the variant readings. There are full explanatory notes and a comprehensive glossary.

The N-Town Cycle is one of the four extant Middle English cycles of mystery plays. A collection of unknown origin, N-Town is composite and in many ways unique. Apart from the corrections of errors in the transcription of the text, the new edition offers a comprehensive introduction, body of notes, and glossary. It also presents the text in a new format, based on an examination of the manuscript, by expanding stanzas attributed to the so-called `Wakefield Master' from nine lines (with some internal rhyme) to thirteen lines. The Townley Plays manuscript dates approximately to the year 1500. The plays is contains are often considered the most interesting and stylistically intricate among all those surviving in extant cycles. By both internal and external evidence they are traceable to the city of Wakefield, where they were apparently performed over much of the sixteenth century. Byrhtferth of Ramsey was one of the outstanding scholars produced by the late Anglo-Saxon church; his principal work, the Enchiridion, completed in the year 1011, is a handbook designed to explain the complexities of medieval date-reckoning - called computus. The late thirteenth-century manuscript, Oxford, Bodleian Library Digby 86, contains a personal anthology of nearly 100 texts in French, English and Latin, including secular literature, devotional material, and texts with practical applications, ranging from medical care for humans and birds to games and party tricks. Many of the texts are unique to this manuscript. It contains 18 English texts, including lyrics, the earliest English Fabliau (Dame Sirith), and the beast-epic, `The Fox and the Wolf'. The manuscript, which was assembled by a layman associated with Redmarley d'Abitot (Gloucestershire), provides and important witness to the context in which these texts were preserved and read.

This is one of the major works of Anglo-Saxon prose, written by one of the foremost scholars of the time and the acknowledged master of prose style. The text is based on the Royal manuscript, which represents the earliest version of the text, and has corrections and annotation in Aelfric's own hand. All the early alterations to the Royal manuscript (amounting to more than a thousand) and all substantive readings from other manuscripts, many of which reflect Aelfric's own revision, are recorded in the apparatus. A lengthy introduction describes all the manuscripts and analyses in detail Aelfric's development of the text, the nature of his revision, and the distribution and copying of the text over the subsequent two centuries. A subsequent volume, currently in preparation by M.R. Godden, will provide commentary and glossary for this text and for the Second Series which was edited by Professor Godden and published by the Early English Text Society (Supplementary Series, 5) in 1979.

This is the third and final volume in the Early English Text Society's edition of AElfric's Catholic Homilies, a set of preaching texts in two series composed in Old English around 900 for the use of preachers throughout England. AElfric (monk of Winchester, and then Cerne Abbas, and the first abbot of Eynsham) was one of the leading scholars of his time and the foremost prose stylist of the Anglo-Saxon period.The Catholic Homilies represent the longest extant text in Old English, and are AElfric's most important work. The text of the Second Series, edited by M. R. Godden, was published in 1979, and the text of the Fisrt Series, edited by Peter Clemoes, in 1997; both volumes included an analysis of manuscripts and a detailed account of the textual history.This final volume gives an account of the origin, function, and dating of the Catholic Homilies and their Latin sources; a detailed commentary on all eighty homilies; and a glossary of all words occurring in the text.

The poetry of Thomas Hoccleve (1367?-1426) has attracted increased attention in recent years. All the verse known to be by him with the exception of his Regiment of Princes, survives in three manuscript copies made by him in the last years of his life. These manuscripts provide a very rare opportunity to study the work of a medieval English poet in copies carefully transcribed by the author himself. Almost all the contents of the three manuscripts were reproduced in the Early English Text Society's editions of Hoccleve's 'Minor Poems'; but the facsimile makes it possible to see exactly how the poet presents his own work, meticulously spelled and metred. The Introduction, as well as listing the contents of the manuscripts and describing them, includes a discussion of Hoccleve's handwriting. Other aspects considered are the dates of the copies, together with the poet's use of abbreviations and punctuation.

They have long been consulted by historians and other students of the fifteenth century for their information about social history and politics, both within East Anglia and also nationally. This authoritative edition, by Professor Norman Davis - formerly Director of the Early English Text Society - was published by the Clarendon Press in 1971 (volume I) and 1976 (volume II) but has long been out of print. In addition to the letters and papers themselves, Volume I contains excellent biographical sketches of the writers, a full comparative chronological table, and an informative introduction to the separate documents. Volume II contains correspondence addressed to the Pastons by others than members of the family. This is arranged in chronological order under the names of the recipients, and in addition some sixty miscellaneous documents are also included. A third volume, which Professor Davis was unable to complete before his death, is in preparation, edited by Dr Richard Beadle and Professor Colin Richmond. This will include the remaining text and the indexes, and will complete the series.
