This volume is the first authoritative, chronologically ordered, critically edited, and corrected collection of Alfred North Whitehead's published and unpublished essays and articles from 1886 until 1916, making it the scholarly standard for researching and referencing these essays.It includes papers published in academic journals as well as previously unknown essays, ranging from mathematics to physics through to education.

Volume 2 of the Critical Edition's 'Essays and Articles' (EA2) captures published and unpublished essays written by Whitehead from his early London period just after joining the Aristotelian Society in 1915 through to his retirement from Harvard in 1937 until his death in 1947.This volume includes previously unknown essays as well as papers published in academic journals and monographs. The better-known essays in this period those that were re-published in collections such as The Aims of Education (1929) and Essays in Science and Philosophy (1947) suffer from having too many variants, each with their own pagination and variations, making scholarly reference unnecessarily complicated. EA2, for the first time, presents all of Whitehead's non-monograph works in a single authoritative, chronologically ordered, critically edited, and corrected format, making these volumes the single scholarly standard for researching and referencing these essays.

This second volume in the critical edition reproduces more than 170 lectures delivered by Alfred North Whitehead at Harvard during his second and third years.For the first time, readers will be able to see the development of Whitehead’s philosophy during the crucial period between the publication of Science and the Modern World and his delivery of the Gifford lectures that would become Process and Reality, as he tests his theories in a classroom setting.These student notes provide the long-missing window into critical developments in Whitehead’s thinking during this time. They challenge longstanding speculations about when exactly Whitehead developed some of his most famous metaphysical concepts, as well as how those concepts are to be properly interpreted against the wider backdrop of his life and thought.Also included is a transcript of the only known lecture Whitehead delivered on the topic of ethics, two mid-year exams given to his students, and nearly 2,000 footnotes that provide additional context for the lectures and alternative student accounts of key passages.

Beginning in September of 1924, Alfred North Whitehead presented a regular course of 85 lectures which concluded in May of 1925. These represent the first ever philosophy lectures he gave and capture him working out the philosophical implications of the remarkable turns physics had taken in his lifetime. This volume finally recreates these lectures by transcribing notes by W. P. Bell, W. E. Hocking and Louise Heath taken at the time – many of which have only recently been discovered and including hundreds of sketches of Whitehead's blackboard diagrams.
