Germany’s unification in October 1990 was one of the most momentous events in modern European history and world politics since the end of World War II. German unity ended the Cold War in Europe, accelerated the collapse of communist regimes across Eastern Europe, and the disintegration of the USSR in 1991. It also triggered NATO’s transformation at the London and Rome summits of the Alliance and deepened Europe’s political and economic integration with the signing of the treaty of Maastricht in 1992. This book offers new insights into the role that the Anglo-American ‘special relationship’ played in this process, and examines the impact that Germany’s reunification had on Anglo-American and transatlantic relations.

Aircraft were at the heart of British supply diplomacy with the United States in the Second World War and were at the forefront of the Roosevelt administration's policy of aiding the Anglo-French alliance against Germany. They were the largest item in British purchasing in the US in 1940, a key consideration in the Lend-Lease of 1941 and a major component of several wartime conferences between Churchill and Roosevelt. Through a series of case studies, Gavin J. Bailey reveals new details of how Britain used American aircraft and integrates this with broader British statecraft and strategy. He challenges conceptions that Britain was strategically reliant on the US and reveals a complicated, asymmetrical interdependency between the wartime allies.

Locates the immediate origins of the Anglo-American 'special relationship' in the diplomacy of Roosevelt's second administration in the late 1930s. In February 1938 Senator William Borah, an inveterate isolationist, accused the Roosevelt Administration of forming a 'tacit alliance' with Britain. Taking Borah's remark as its starting point, Tony McCulloch analyses Anglo-American relations from the start of Franklin D. Roosevelt's second term in January 1937 through to the outbreak of war in Europe and the revision of the US Neutrality Act in November 1939. The book's central argument is that despite the mutual doubts afflicting the governments, and public opinion, on both sides of the Atlantic during these years, there was nevertheless considerable progress thanks largely to Franklin Roosevelt in establishing an ideological and strategic understanding between the two democracies which laid the foundation for the 'special relationship' so desired by Winston Churchill during and after the Second World War.

The Falklands War, the US invasion of Grenada, the Anglo-Guatemalan dispute over Belize and the US involvement in Nicaragua – in the 1980s, these crises threatened to overwhelm a renewal in US–UK relations.
