Astrid Lindgren (1907 2002) is one of the most widely read children s book authors in the world. Her books have sold 200 million copies and been translated into more than 100 languages. Reproduced here is Lindgren s shorthand draft of a Pippi Longstocking story alongside illustrations of Pippi and her unmistakable house on a pink and mint green background.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 1832) was the greatest poet, writer, and dramatist in German literature. Reproduced here is a handwritten dialogue between Faust and Mephistopheles from Goethe s manuscript of Faust, Part II, and on the back cover is an engraving of the two characters by German illustrator and draftsman Julius Nisle.

Considered one of the masters of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) produced the finest frescoes and many of the most revered sculptures in the world. He was renowned for his fierce solitude, yet was one of the great chroniclers of the human form.

Today, her handwritten draft is held at Bodleian Libraries at the University of Oxford.
