This work, which establishes Dr. Alcalde's standing as a leading theorist, fills a vacuum that has existed on the sources of British and American thought on development in the first half of the twentieth century. It seeks to link such ideas with the expansion of American trade and commerce.

While many studies are available on Churchill's statesmanship and policies, Weidhorn's study is the first thorough analysis of his political rhetoric.

In volume III, Kenneth W. Thompson centers on two original presentations at the Miller Center by the Pulitzer prize-winning biographer of Jefferson, Dumas Malone. Malone's two contributions are "The Rhetoric of the Founders" and "Jefferson and Madison." Other contributors are Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Norman Graebner, Lloyd Cutler, Daniel Lang, Hugh Sidey and Kenneth W. Thompson.
