Latini’s masterpiece of Baroque cooking and household management was the first book to publish recipes using tomatoes and chilli peppers. The Modern Steward was published in Naples in 1692-94, when the city was a major cultural centre. It includes a wealth of recipes, plus discussions of the kitchen and serving staff, setting the table, menus, protocol, entertainment, and wines. Edited and with commentary by Joan Greatrex, this book makes available for the first time in printed form the sermon manuscript, MS Q. 18, which survives in its original home in the medieval cathedral library at Worcester. At first glance this small, untidy quarto-size manuscript appears to be merely an unremarkable collection of early fourteenth-century Latin sermons. However, unlike other surviving sermon manuscripts from cathedral priories and major Benedictine abbeys, which had sermons of notable figures like Augustine, Gregory the Great, and Bernard of Clairvaux, the Worcester MS Q. 18 is by contrast a home-grown production consisting only of homilies prepared by mostly anonymous members of the Worcester monastic community. And they are a rare, if not unique, example of working copies of sermons, with the Latin text reworked, altered, and corrected by a number of monks, giving us a unique insight into the mind and the mentality of a medieval monastic community.

Jerome’s Abbreviated Psalter was one of the most important collections of psalm verses in the Middle Ages. Commonly found in primers and books of hours, it was the primary medium for lay people to imitate the monastic divine office, even as it offered concessions to harsh personal circumstances. This edition presents the Middle English versions in parallel, followed by the Latin version in the Lincoln Thornton manuscript. An introductory review considers the psalter in general and the origins of abbreviated psalters in particular. Jerome’s Abbreviated Psalter is the most widespread text in the abbreviated psalter tradition and it illustrates an important aspect of lay devotional life from the eighth to the sixteenth century. Alongside his story, multiple other shorter narratives are told and many other voices are heard, making it a rich and varied account of the poet’s views of heroism, conflict, loyalty, and the human condition.The poem is widely taught in schools and universities, and has been adapted, modernized, and translated dozens of times, but this is the first large-scale polyvocal translation.Readers will encounter the voices of over two hundred individuals, woven together into a reading experience that is at once productively dissonant, yet strangely coherent in its extreme variation. We hope that it turns the common question "Why do we need yet another translation?" on its head, asking instead, "How can we hear from more translators?," and "How can previously unheard, or marginalized voices, find space, like this, in the world of Old English Studies?" The Book of Roger is a twelfth-century Arabic geographical treatise commissioned by King Roger II of Sicily and compiled by the Muslim polymath al-Idrisi. On its completion in around 1157 it was the most detailed description of the known world produced up to that point. Dating from about the sixth century AD, and previously unidentified or attributed to Ps.-Basil, the text was intended as a sermon of comfort for victims of leprosy. An incurable and socially marginalizing affliction known to all ancient cultures, this disease defined its victims as “unclean,” as distinct from other sicknesses. A consolatory sermon, this treatise shares some features with the pre-Christian literary genre of consolation. The writer speaks to the lepers with words of comfort beyond their present suffering and reminds them of the glorious new body they will have in the resurrection. Synodinos shows that this treatise was the work of St. Radegunde of Poitiers, a monastic Frankish queen who lived a life of self-denial and whose significance deserves to be better understood.

Abraham Caslari was a Jewish physician in Catalonia, where he and his family found refuge after the great expulsion of French Jews in 1306. In 1348, he was also one of the many physicians who found themselves treating men, women, and children during the Black Death. Rejecting the emerging consensus among physicians that the fevers were pestilential, Caslari insisted that this misdiagnosis had caused many needless deaths. The Hebrew tractate that presents his analysis and recommended treatments is one of the earliest written responses to the Black Death by a contemporary physician. This is the first annotated edition and translation from Spanish into English of Preguntas que hizo un clérigo de Ruan de Francia a las cuales respondió el excelente y eminentísimo señor hacham Saul Levi Mortera (Questions by a Christian Cleric from Rouen, France, and Answers by the Excellent, Eminent, and Wise Saul Levi Mortera), which was written in the 1640s by the Chief Rabbi of Amsterdam, Saul Levi Mortera.Mortera was the spiritual leader of a community of conversos, refugees from inquisitorial Iberia who settled in Amsterdam to practise Judaism openly, but who lacked religious training and held Catholicized crypto-Jewish beliefs. Mortera’s text merges philosophy with theology to persuade conversos to abandon those Catholicized crypto-Jewish beliefs and adhere to rabbinic Judaism. The book includes a critical introduction to the work alongside the translation and modernized edition of the Spanish text.
