The emblem, occupying a territory bordering literature and fine arts, was long unclaimed by scholars. But recently emblems have become the subject of resurgent interest as a key element in semiotics, communications theory, and the sociology of production and reception. his volume (the first of a series dealing with the English tradition) follows the two devoted to the emblems of Andreas Alciatus in Latin and in the main vernacular translations which comprise volume 1 of the Index Emblematicus.The books indexed in this volume are: Jan van der Noot's A Theatre for Voluptuous Worldlings (London 1569), The Worthy Tract of Paulus Jovius translated by Samuel Daniel and including Daniel's collection of 'certaine notable devises both militarie and amorous' from Domenichi (liondon 1585), and Geoffrey Whitney's A Choice of Emblemes and Other Devises (Leyden 1586). For each, Daly provides an introductory and bibliographic note; facsimilies of the emblems, and with each a description of pictures, translations of mottoes, a list of key words from the epigram, and information on dedicatee, bearer (of impresa), and references; and indexes to the various fields of information which make up each emblem or impresa as a whole. All key words are flagged.The object of this work is identification rather than interpretation. Together with those which will follow, it is an important step toward the establishment of an essential foundation on which to build emblem studies.

The Emblemata of Andreas Alciatus was published in 1551 in Lyon and was soon translated into at least four languages. These volumes allow a researcher to consult all versions at once and compare them with considerable ease.In Part 1 each of the emblems is reproduced in facsimilie, the motto and epigram transcribed and translated, the pictorial emblem analysed into its key motifs, and the relevant sources listed. Part 2 is organized in parallel fashion and deals with the translations of Marnef, Hunger, Held, Marquale, and Cadomosto.Part 1 also contains thorough introductory sections, including a biography of Alciatus as it relates to his Emblemata, a useful bibliography, extensive cumulative indexes to the key motifs and mottoes, and lists all mottoes by language of origin and of the translationsBy making the emblem books accessible to modern scholars in this fashion, the Index will enhance the study not only of literature, but also of the history of art, culture, religion, and symbol.

This volume is part of the Index Emblematicus series, a project whose aim is to collect and edit important works of emblem literature produced throughout Europe during the Renaissance.Volume 2 of the English Emblem Tradition provides extensive critical apparatus for four late sixteenth-century English works: P.S., The Heroicall Devises of M. Claudius Paradin [and] The Purtratures or Emblemes of Gabriel Simeon, A Florentine; Andrew Willet, Sacrorum Emblematum Centuria Una; and Thomas Combe, The Theater of Fine Devices. The volume not only reproduces each of these emblem books, but also provides brief critical and bibliographic introductions, translations of the mottoes, descriptions of the picturae, and indices to the visual and verbal components of the works.

Interest in creating emblematic devices, fashionable during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, did not disappear in England with the demise of the tournament and the Stuart masque. Alan R. Young examines the hundreds of emblematic devices used by the warring parties on their military flags during and immediatley after, the English Civil Wars. To be fully understood, these emblematic devices must be 'read' as part of the massive propaganda war waged by the different factions. This collection throws light on the nature of the conflicts that led to the civil wars, based on the views set forth in the emblems and mottoes designed by the men who risked their lives in the cause of Parliament, king, covenant, or Irish Confederacy.Unlike earlier volumes in the Index Emblematicus series, which draw on printed emblem books as their sources, The English Emblem Tradition, Volume 3 brings together a corpus of material that was previously scattered widely among a number of surviving manuscripts. Wherever possible, carefully drawn illustrations of details of the flags have been reproduced from the original manuscripts. The flags are listed in alphabetical order by motto ( the mottoes are translated from the original Latin, French, Spanish, and other languages). A series of concordances, indexes, and lists makes the volume extremely accessible. Because of the unusual nature of the source material, a lengthy introductory essay is provided to explain the indexing of the text.

This volume of the Index Emblematicus deals with three early seventeenth-century works: Remaines of a Greater Worke Concerning Britaine, by William Camden; The Mirrour of Maiestie, by H.G.; and Otto van Veen's Amorum Emblemata. Camden's Remaines is noteworthy for using imprese in language as pictorial image; for mixing imprese with cognizance; and for considering impresa itself as the identity of the individual rather than as a general principle. H.G.'s Mirrour is remarkable in that every one of its emblems consists of a personal heraldic coat of arms of an identified statesman twinned with a pictorial engraving, motto, and epigram on an opposite page. Van Veen's Emblemata enters literary history as a volume of emblem pictures consecrated to secular love experience, encapsulating some of the conventions of the sonnet sequences and having a strong influence on religious love literature.Each book is reproduced with critical and bibliographic introductions, translation of the poems and mottos, descriptions of the emblems, and indices to the visual and verbal components of the works.
