"Using social, organisational and economic theories, this book develops an integrated research framework to demonstrate the effects of Chinese traditional guanxi networks on modern business relationships and market performance. It also compares the effects of guanxi networks between upstream and downstream partnerships and between traditional and high-value market outlets. It is recognised that quality and safety issues are the major constraints for Chinese vegetables entering into international markets. Primary producers face several bottlenecks such as small production scales, lack of market information and low negotiation power which leads to their exclusion by high-value market outlets such as supermarkets and international markets. Processing and exporting companies, on the other hand, experience instable delivery and inconsistent quality supply. As a result, they remain low-cost exporters in a low-quality segment of international markets. Different solutions for small-scale vegetable farmers, processing companies, exporting companies, and supermarkets in optimising their business performance are also covered. This book is of interest to professionals and practitioners involved in the design, management and assessment of national and international supply chains for perishable products in particular in transition economies."

Headquarters-subsidiary relationship governance in emerging markets of Central Eastern Europe
A study in Poland

"Multinational enterprises often seem to be on a 'roller coaster' when managing their operations in transition economies, especially because of the volatile business and political environment. By combining agency and stewardship theory, this book describes the subtle equilibrium between formal control and day-to-day coordination in the Headquarters-Subsidiary (HQ-S) governance relationship. Using the Polish situation as an example, it places HQ-S governance in the context of a transitional economy while taking the cultural differences between the headquarters and subsidiary country into account. This explorative empirical study shows that the use of strategic and operational control mechanisms work as a transparent ‘platform’ on which coordination and attuning mechanisms can be build to deal with the day-to-day management challenges in a transition economy. Creating flexibility and learning capabilities at the subsidiary level, rather than maintaining a subsidiary in a state of dependence can clearly contribute to the success of international operations. However, it also reveals that there is no simple and uniform recipe for managing subsidiaries. The road from governance to performance is not a one-way street and alternative routes are available to accelerate performance. This book is a valuable resource to all directors and managers of multinational enterprises, as well as academic researchers who concern themselves with the study of multinational enterprises in transition economies."

Quality management and strategic alliances in the mango supply chain from Costa Rica
An interdisciplinary approach for analysing coordination, incentives and governance

"This book develops an integrated research framework in which social science and natural science merge in the analysis of the relationships and transactions within the mango supply chain from Costa Rica. More specifically, behaviour economics, and institutional economics is combined with quality management and product development techniques. This book is also important because it uses an innovative gaming simulation for research and not only for training. The game develops a standard supply chain for a perishable product, which is used for simulating the bargaining power and revenue distribution of the agents in the chain and the governance structure preferred for doing business. This game simulation is played by the real producers in the field.Other important topics covered are quality management and quality variability. Studying quality management (intrinsic and extrinsic attributes) in relation to the farm household characteristics, production system and agreements, enables us to define some economic incentives to improve the quality of the produce. Studying the variability of the produce helps us understand and describe how the different management practices throughout the chain affects the quality of the produce. This relates to the market outlet choice the producers make and the strategic behaviour they have. This book is of interest for professionals and practitioners involved in the design, management and assessment of national and international supply chains for perishable produce."

Integration and self regulation of quality management in Dutch agri-food supply chains
A cross-chain analysis of the poultry meat, the fruit and vegetable and the flower and potted plant chains

"During the last decade, sector wide crises in agriculture have rapidly followed each other, resulting in serious consumer concerns about the quality and safety of agri-food products. To prevent new crises, governments have developed quality regulations and retailers have introduced quality management standards. However, concerns have been raised about the administrative burdens placed on firms, because they must comply with many private and public quality regulations. Therefore, both government and firms strive for more integration and self regulation of quality management systems.By combining managerial and economic theory, this study builds a framework to demonstrate the impact of integrated quality management on self regulation and performance. Using empirical evidence from the poultry meat, the fruit and vegetable and the flower and potted plant chains, this study shows that integrated quality management systems positively affect performance and self regulation. However, it is necessary to find committed partners that share the firm’s quality objectives. In most cases, too strict enforcement of quality requirements is destructive, initiates conflict and does not lead to higher performance. Furthermore, governmental agencies should focus on innovative approaches to assure quality. Not legislation, but factors such as media attention and corporate social responsibility enlarge the integration of quality management systems. This book is recommended for a broad audience of professionals, practitioners and policy makers who concern themselves with the design, management and assessment of quality management and self regulation in agri-food supply chains."

Throughout history, rural smallholders have formed various forms of associations to confront access-barriers to the market. It is estimated that 250 million farmers participate in agricultural cooperatives in developing countries. Agricultural cooperatives are considered to be a fundamental pillar of rural development strategies, as well as a core institution in the process of governance decentralization and agri-business development. In Ethiopia, where agro-ecological conditions are generally favourable, 85 percent of the national population lives in rural areas under subsistence or semi-subsistence regimes. Agricultural cooperatives are advocated by the government as key market institutions to exploit Ethiopia's agricultural growth potential. The scope of this study is to improve the understanding of the role played by cooperative organizations in linking Ethiopian smallholder farmers to emerging markets. Through exploring the evolution of supermarkets, integrated supply chains, and global commodity exchange networks, this study sheds light on the relationship between rural cooperation and farmers' competitiveness. Quantitative data that form the basis for this study were collected from the Highland regions of Ethiopia, in the period between 2003 and 2006. Findings suggest that cooperatives are not a panacea to boost rural competitiveness. Collective action assists smallholders in procuring state subsidy for production, but does not necessarily lead to increased commercialization. Only when collective action involves collective marketing do farmers become more commercial, further improving production volumes and productivity. However, in the process of commercialization and production intensification quality management is often neglected in Ethiopian agricultural cooperatives. This study reveals guidelines for public-private partnerships so that cooperative farmers can maximize commercialization and optimize the balance between quality and productivity.

The globalisation of supply chains and networks causes traders from all over the world to make transactions with each other. Many transactions are made in world markets where the price is the way in which supply and demand are brought together. Other transactions, however, are made between people who know each other and have business relationships, using the so-called network mode of organisation. These traders may be loyal to one another and consider the role of social variables like trust, embeddedness and culture in their choices. This balance between network and market modes of organisation is not yet fully understood and is addressed in this book. This book uses a new research method that is ideally suited to study complex supply networks with all of its different traders. Gaming simulation is an established method for training and policy evaluation, but its application as a both quantitative and qualitative research method is relatively new. Two gaming simulations, called the Trust and Tracing Game (to study trust and cheating) and the Mango Chain Game (to study bargaining power and revenue distribution) are applied to show empirical results of a generic supply network trading products with a hidden quality attribute and the mango supply network from Costa Rica. This book is of interest for two categories of readers. Those who may like to concentrate on the empirical results will be interested in the factors that determine the choice of a mode of organisation in supply networks. Those who are interested in the methodology may wish to use gaming simulation as a research tool in their own research.

Food quality incidents have made societal concerns on food safety grow worldwide. In the developed world, academics and practitioners explore food quality using a supply chain perspective. In transitional economies, such as China, this perspective is largely unexplored. This book addresses food quality and firm performance improvements through supply chain integration and quality management in China’s pork processing industry.Data were collected from Chinese pork processing firms. This book shows the relationship between quality management practices and firm performance. Factors that influence firm performance include in-company quality management, supplier/customer quality management, employee involvement and integrated governance mechanisms. This book is a valuable resource for practitioners of meat processing enterprises, as well as academic researchers with an interest in the areas of agri-food supply chain governance, quality management and firm performance in transitional economies.

During the last decade, logistics outsourcing is growing in importance worldwide. Meanwhile, many different kinds of logistics services are also introduced in the outsourcing market. However, up to now, there are no guidelines for the food processing industry to identify which logistics activities should be outsourced to which type of logistic service provider (LSP).By combining managerial and economic theory, this book builds an integrated research framework to demonstrate decisive factors for outsourcing different kinds of logistics activities and their effect on logistics performance. Using empirical evidences from the food processing industry in Taiwan and the Netherlands, this study shows that:- outsourcing decisions of different levels of logistics activities have different determining factors.- total outsourcing (i.e. having the LSP orchestrate the whole logistics process) results in higher logistics service performances in terms of lead-time, reliability, and flexibility.- currently the Netherlands have higher percentages of outsourcing of transportation and transportation management than Taiwan. In the future, Taiwan will probably outsource value added activities and logistics orchestration activities more than the Netherlands. This book is recommended for a broad audience of professionals and practitioners who concern themselves with the design, planning and management of logistics in international food supply chains.
