This informative volume is comprised of various articles which examine specific issues relevant to authority and leadership in the Jewish community. The articles cover a vast number of cases and span a period of time from the biblical to the present. From the political and legal challenges and pressures from the outside, to the problems within the community itself such as the continuation of the Jewish tradition through education, the book reviews and analyzes individual instances in which the leadership of the community has been called upon to act. Together, the articles are woven in with one another against the historical background of the Jews to provide a genuinely interesting and complete chronicle of authority and leadership in the Jewish community. Co-published with the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.

Eliezer Schweid in Democracy and the Halakhah analyzes the writings of Rabbi Haim Hirschensohn, one of the early Hebrew cultural pioneers who laid the foundation for the Zionist enterprise. Born in Safed Eretz Israel in 1857, Hirschensohn was pushed out of the fanatic Ashkenazi religious community and ended up as an Orthodox rabbi in Hoboken, New Jersey. His writings focus on finding a philosophic basis that could reconcile the Torah with the transformation forced upon the Jewish people by modernity so as to come out with a coherent systematic system of political thought that could encompass both. Co-published with the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.

An analysis of the political vision of the rabbis in the Talmud and Midrash. Analyzes theological concepts in terms of political concepts with special attention to the covenant concept as it changed direction in Rabbinic literature. This concept held that government was a commentary on the original purpose of society and that each person was to become his own authority.

One of the few works which documents the institutional relationship between the Jewish communities of Israel and the U.S. The United Israel Appeal, one of the groups involved in the State's development, serves well as a mirror with which to reflect some of the more salient aspects of American Jewry's material contributions to the rise of the modern Jewish State.

This volume examines trends which are buffeting the contemporary Jewish family and presents reactions to those trends. The main body of the book, examining and evaluating the phenomena of Jews living with post-emancipation realities, encompasses the first objective; the extensive bibliography, citing over 1,200 articles written in North America between 1970 and 1982, is a response to the second. This collection of essays by distinguished Israeli and American Jews focuses on the problems of relating morality and power in contemporary statecraft. The following three questions are addressed in detail by the contributors: 1) Is there a difference between individual morality and the morality of public policy choices for a state or other political community? 2) Assuming a less than perfect world, how should political communities, their leaders and members deal with the problem of maintaining moral positions under duress or at times of crisis? 3) To what extent does or should a morally relativistic or morally absolutist position influence one's conclusions with regard to the first two questions? Contributors: Sidney Hook, Moshe Landau, Manfred Gerstenfeld, Natan Yanai, Netanel Lorch, Ismar Schorsh, Meir Shitrit, Shmuel Trigano, Baruch Susser, and others. Co-published with the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.

In Israel today there is increasingly vigorous support for the framing of a constitution. At the same time there is almost no recognition that in forty years Israel has acquired an almost complete set of basic laws that form a constitution. The aims of this volume are threefold: to inform the Israeli public and the world as to what exists and consider what still is needed in the way of a constitution; to enter constitutionalism firmly on the Israeli public agenda; and to learn from the American experience. The author shows that Israel's constitution is more than anything else a modern adaptation of an ancient constitution. Contents: Israel and Models of Modern Constitutionalism; The Politics of Constitution-Making in the United States and Israel; Issues of Constitutional Design: Civil Rights and Liberties; Issues of Constitutional Design: Interjurisdictional Relations; The State of Constitutionalism in the United States and Israel: Where Do We Go from Here?^R Co-publised with the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.
