Understanding how a single shape can incur a complex range of transformations, while defining the same perceptually obvious figure, entails a rich and challenging collection of problems, at the interface between applied mathematics, statistics and computer science. The program on Mathematics of Shapes and Applications, was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore in 2016. It provided discussions on theoretical developments and numerous applications in computer vision, object recognition and medical imaging.The analysis of shapes is an example of a mathematical problem directly connected with applications while offering deep open challenges to theoretical mathematicians. It has grown, over the past decades, into an interdisciplinary area in which researchers studying infinite-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (global analysis) interact with applied mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists and biomedical engineers on a variety of problems involving shapes.The volume illustrates this wealth of subjects by providing new contributions on the metric structure of diffeomorphism groups and shape spaces, recent developments on deterministic and stochastic models of shape evolution, new computational methods manipulating shapes, and new statistical tools to analyze shape datasets. In addition to these contributions, applications of shape analysis to medical imaging and computational anatomy are discussed, leading, in particular, to improved understanding of the impact of cognitive diseases on the geometry of the brain.

Interacting particle systems are Markov processes involving infinitely many interacting components. Since their introduction in the 1970s, researchers have found many applications in statistical physics and population biology. Genealogies, which follow the origin of the state of a site backwards in time, play an important role in their studies, especially for the biologically motivated systems.The program Genealogies of Interacting Particle Systems held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore, from 17 July to 18 Aug 2017, brought together experts and young researchers interested in this modern topic. Central to the program were learning sessions where lecturers presented work outside of their own research, as well as a normal workshop. This is reflected in the present volume which contains two types of articles:Written by respected researchers, including experts in the field such as Steve Evans, member of the US National Academy of Sciences, as well as Anton Wakolbinger, Andreas Greven, and many others, this volume will no doubt be a valuable contribution to the probability community.

The Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore hosted a thematic program on Quantum and Kinetic Problems: Modeling, Analysis, Numerics and Applications from September 2019 to March 2020. As an important part of the program, tutorials and special lectures were given by leading experts in the fields for participating graduate students and junior researchers. This invaluable volume collects six expanded lecture notes with self-contained tutorials. The coverage includes mathematical models and numerical methods for multidimensional solitons in linear and nonlinear potentials; Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) with dipole-dipole interaction, higher order interaction and spin-orbit coupling; classical and quantum turbulence; and molecular dynamics process based on the first-principle in quantum chemistry.This volume serves to inspire graduate students and researchers who will embark into original research work in these fields.

The thematic program Quantum and Kinetic Problems: Modeling, Analysis, Numerics and Applications was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore, from September 2019 to March 2020. Leading experts presented tutorials and special lectures geared towards the participating graduate students and junior researchers.Readers will find in this significant volume four expanded lecture notes with self-contained tutorials on modeling and simulation for collective dynamics including individual and population approaches for population dynamics in mathematical biology, collective behaviors for Lohe type aggregation models, mean-field particle swarm optimization, and consensus-based optimization and ensemble Kalman inversion for global optimization problems with constraints.This volume serves to inspire graduate students and researchers who will embark into original research work in kinetic models for collective dynamics and their applications.

Density Functional Theory (DFT) first established it's theoretical footing in the 1960s from the framework of Hohenberg-Kohn theorems. DFT has since seen much development in evaluation techniques as well as application in solving problems in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.This review volume, part of the IMS Lecture Notes Series, is a collection of contributions from the September 2019 Workshop on the topic, held in the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore.With contributions from prominent Mathematicians, Physicists, and Chemists, the volume is a blend of comprehensive review articles on the Mathematical and the Physicochemical aspects of DFT and shorter contributions on particular themes, including numerical implementations.The book will be a useful reference for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers.

This volume results from two programs that took place at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore: Aspects of Computation — in Celebration of the Research Work of Professor Rod Downey (21 August to 15 September 2017) and Automata Theory and Applications: Games, Learning and Structures (20-24 September 2021).The first program was dedicated to the research work of Rodney G. Downey, in celebration of his 60th birthday. The second program covered automata theory whereby researchers investigate the other end of computation, namely the computation with finite automata, and the intermediate level of languages in the Chomsky hierarchy (like context-free and context-sensitive languages).This volume contains 17 contributions reflecting the current state-of-art in the fields of the two programs.

This is a collection of lecture notes from the minicourses in the December 2018 Langlands Workshop: Endoscopy and Beyond. The volume combines seven introductory chapters on trace formulas, local Arthur packets, and beyond endoscopy. It aims to introduce the endoscopy classification via a basic example of the trace formula for SL(2), explore the more refined questions on the structure of Arthur packets, and look beyond endoscopy following the suggestions of Langlands, Braverman-Kazhdan, Ngo, and Altuğ. The book is a helpful reference for undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers.

The Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore organized a program on “Post-Genome Knowledge Discovery” from January to June 2002. The program focused on the computational and statistical analysis of sequences and genetics, and the mathematical modeling of complex biological interactions, which are critical to the accurate annotation of genomic sequences, the study of the interplay between genes and proteins, and the study of the genetic variability of species. As part of the program, tutorials for graduate students and newcomers to this transdisciplinary area of research were given by experts in these fields.This important volume collects the expanded notes of some of the tutorials that were given during the program. The topics include comparison and alignment of biological sequences, modeling and analysis of biological pathways, data mining and knowledge discovery from biological and clinical data.

A common theme in probability theory is the approximation of complicated probability distributions by simpler ones, the central limit theorem being a classical example. Stein's method is a tool which makes this possible in a wide variety of situations. Traditional approaches, for example using Fourier analysis, become awkward to carry through in situations in which dependence plays an important part, whereas Stein's method can often still be applied to great effect. In addition, the method delivers estimates for the error in the approximation, and not just a proof of convergence. Nor is there in principle any restriction on the distribution to be approximated; it can equally well be normal, or Poisson, or that of the whole path of a random process, though the techniques have so far been worked out in much more detail for the classical approximation theorems.This volume of lecture notes provides a detailed introduction to the theory and application of Stein's method, in a form suitable for graduate students who want to acquaint themselves with the method. It includes chapters treating normal, Poisson and compound Poisson approximation, approximation by Poisson processes, and approximation by an arbitrary distribution, written by experts in the different fields. The lectures take the reader from the very basics of Stein's method to the limits of current knowledge.

Stein's startling technique for deriving probability approximations first appeared about 30 years ago. This volume, the proceedings of a workshop held in honour of Charles Stein in Singapore, August 2003, contains contributions from many of the mathematicians at the forefront of this effort. This volume documents the research carried out by visiting scientists attached to the Institute for Mathematical Sciences (IMS) at the National University of Singapore and the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) under the program “Advances and Mathematical Issues in Large Scale Simulation.” From 2002 to 2003, researchers from various countries gathered to initiate interesting and innovative work on various themes related to multiscale simulation and fast algorithms.Today, modeling and simulation are used extensively to solve complex problems and to reduce the use of experimentation during the design and analysis stage. It is important to know the various issues that have to be considered in the successful development of computational methodologies for such work.This volume is a compilation of the research by various visiting scientists in the area of modeling and multiscale simulation. Each article covers a major project and documents how computational methodology, mathematical modeling, high performance computing and simulation are combined in a multiscale scheme to solve a variety of complex problems. Some of these include the design, synthesis, processing, characterization and manufacture of nanomaterials and nanostructures, new algorithms for computational work, and grid computing.Through the included examples, readers can realize the vast potential of computational modeling and large scale simulation for the solution of problems in a variety of disciplines and applications.

Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) originated in statistical physics, but has spilled over into various application areas, leading to a corresponding variety of techniques and methods. That variety stimulates new ideas and developments from many different places, and there is much to be gained from cross-fertilization. This book presents five expository essays by leaders in the field, drawing from perspectives in physics, statistics and genetics, and showing how different aspects of MCMC come to the fore in different contexts. The essays derive from tutorial lectures at an interdisciplinary program at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Singapore, which exploited the exciting ways in which MCMC spreads across different disciplines.

The explosion of data arising from rapid advances in communication, sensing and computational power has concentrated research effort on more advanced techniques for the representation, processing, analysis and interpretation of data sets. In view of these exciting developments, the program “Mathematics and Computation in Imaging Science and Information Processing” was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore, from July to December 2003 and in August 2004 to promote and facilitate multidisciplinary research in the area. As part of the program, a series of tutorial lectures were conducted by international experts on a wide variety of topics in mathematical image, signal and information processing.This compiled volume contains survey articles by the tutorial speakers, all specialists in their respective areas. They collectively provide graduate students and researchers new to the field a unique and valuable introduction to a range of important topics at the frontiers of current research.

Gabor and wavelet analyses have found widespread applications in signal analysis, image processing and many other information-related areas. Both deliver representations that are simultaneously local in time and in frequency. Due to their significance and success in practical applications, they formed some of the core topics of the program “Mathematics and Computation in Imaging Science and Information Processing”, which was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore, from July to December 2003 and in August 2004. As part of the program, tutorial lectures were conducted by international experts, and they covered a wide spectrum of topics in mathematical image, signal and information processing.This volume includes exposition articles by the tutorial speakers on the foundations of Gabor analysis, subband filters and wavelet algorithms, and operator-theoretic interpolation of wavelets and frames. It also presents research papers on Gabor analysis, written by specialists in their respective areas. The volume takes graduate students and researchers new to the field on a valuable learning journey from introductory Gabor and wavelet analyses to advanced topics of current research.

This volume carries the same title as that of an international conference held at the National University of Singapore, 9-11 January 2006 on the occasion of Roger E. Howe's 60th birthday. Authored by leading members of the Lie theory community, these contributions, expanded from invited lectures given at the conference, are a fitting tribute to the originality, depth and influence of Howe's mathematical work. The range and diversity of the topics will appeal to a broad audience of research mathematicians and graduate students interested in symmetry and its profound applications.

This important book consists of surveys of high-frequency financial data analysis and econometric forecasting, written by pioneers in these areas including Nobel laureate Lawrence Klein. Some of the chapters were presented as tutorials to an audience in the Econometric Forecasting and High-Frequency Data Analysis Workshop at the Institute for Mathematical Science, National University of Singapore in May 2006. They will be of interest to researchers working in macroeconometrics as well as financial econometrics. Moreover, readers will find these chapters useful as a guide to the literature as well as suggestions for future research.

This volume presents the written versions of the tutorial lectures given at the Workshop on Computational Prospects of Infinity, held from 18 June to 15 August 2005 at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences, National University of Singapore. It consists of articles by four of the leading experts in recursion theory (computability theory) and set theory. The survey paper of Rod Downey provides a comprehensive introduction to algorithmic randomness, one of the most active areas of current research in recursion theory. Theodore A Slaman's article is the first printed account of the ground-breaking work of Slaman-Woodin and Slaman-Shore on the definability of the Turing jump. John Steel presents some results on the properties of derived models of mice, and on the existence of mice with large derived models. The study was motivated by some of the well-known Holy Grails in inner model theory, including the Mouse Set Conjecture. In his presentation, W Hugh Woodin gives an outline of an expanded version (unpublished) on suitable extender sequences, a subject that was developed in the attempt to understand inner model theory for large cardinals beyond the level of superstrong cardinals.The volume serves as a useful guide for graduate students and researchers in recursion theory and set theory to some of the most important and significant developments in these subjects in recent years.

As part of the program, tutorials for graduate students and junior researchers were given by leading experts in the field.This invaluable volume is a collection of three expanded lecture notes of those tutorials which cover a wide range of topics including basic mathematical details for various epidemic models, statistical distribution theory, and applications with real-life examples with implications for health policy makers.

This volume contains three expanded lecture notes from the program Scalar Curvature in Manifold Topology and Conformal Geometry that was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences from 1 November to 31 December 2014. The first chapter surveys the recent developments on the fourth-order equations with negative exponent from geometric points of view such as positive mass theorem and uniqueness results. The next chapter deals with the recent important progress on several conjectures such as the existence of non-flat smooth hyper-surfaces and Serrin's over-determined problem. And the final chapter induces a new technique to handle the equation with critical index and the sign change coefficient as well as the negative index term. These topics will be of interest to those studying conformal geometry and geometric partial differential equations.

Mathemusical Conversations celebrates the understanding of music through mathematics, and the appreciation of mathematics through music. This volume is a compilation of the invited talks given at the Mathemusical Conversations workshop that took place in Singapore from 13-15 February 2015, organized by Elaine Chew in partnership with Gérard Assayag for the scientific program and with Bernard Lanskey for the artistic program. The contributors are world experts and leading scholars, writing on the intersection of music and mathematics. They also focus on performance and composition, two topics which are foundational both to the understanding of human creativity and to the creation of tomorrow's music technologies. This book is essential reading for researchers in both music and mathematics.
