This intriguing book provides a up-to-date introduction to the works of Michel Tournier, arguably the most internationally influential French novelist of the last 25 years. His novels have been widely translated and have often provoked controversy and incurred charges of perversion. This study examines the nature of the attack which Tournier mounts on many of the norms and assumptions of Western culture and his often startling reinterpretation of the mythologies which have nourished and sustained it. His critical review of contemporary culture places him in a radical tradition of French writers and aligns him with contemporaries such as Barthes, Foucault and some aspects of post-modernist thinking. This is the first study to provide a full picture of Tournier not just as a novelist but also as a prophet and dissenter who brings creative disruption to bear on what he views as deeply rooted repressive structures of thinking and feeling.

Luis Antonio de Villena (b. 1951), one of modern Spain's best-known writers, tackles subjects as varied as the nightlife of Madrid, Renaissance art, sex, the nature of love, Plato, blue jeans, classicism and rock music. In this provocative new book, Chris Perriam places Villena's creative work in relation to the contemporary Spanish cultural scene, to 20th century homosexual culture and to significant gay and dissident figures of the past, including Lorca and Luis Cernuda, and explains how Villena has developed a radical new aesthetic out of the old raw materials of love, sex, death, power, and the primacy of art and desire.

'I always thought that [building] bridges is the best job there is because roads go over bridges, and without roads we'd still be like savages. In short, bridges are like the opposite of borders, and borders are where wars start.'Primo Levi, 'La chiave a stella' (The Wrench)Primo Levi (1919-1987) was one of Italy's most distinguished writers. A survivor of the Holocaust, his memoirs on the Nazi death camps (If This Is a Man and The Truce) are internationally recognised as among the most powerful and profound testimonies to have come out of the extermination of the European Jewry. This book is the first comprehensive introduction to Levi and his writing for English-speaking readers. The author draws attention to the literary worth of Levi's entire output -- not just the Holocaust testimonies for which he is primarily known -- and situates his works in the context of Italian culture and society from the 1920s to the 1980s. A man with many identities -- chemist, industrial manager and writer -- he tried, through his writing, to build bridges between different cultures and fields of enquiry.General readers who are acquainted with Levi's writings will find this book fascinating, as will students and scholars of Holocaust Literature, Italian Studies and Contemporary Italian Literature.

Oriana Fallaci (b. 1930) is an awkward presence on Italian bookshelves, in world journalism and among feminists. This book, the first literary study of Fallaci, examines the implications of the storms and silences that she keeps rousing. A fully emancipated and successful woman in the man's world of political journalism, she has antagonised many feminists by her championship of motherhood and her idolization of heroic manhood. In journalism, her critics have felt that she has outraged the conventions of interviewing and reporting. As a novelist, she shatters the invisible diaphragm of literariness and is accused of betraying, or simply failing, literature. This book focuses on Fallaci's direct engagement as a writer with major political and social issues such as women's liberation, Vietnam, Islamic fundamentalism and the space programme. A distinctive and controversial feature of her writing is the way in which she blurs the interface between reportage and fiction in an attempt to obliterate the gap that separates the word from the world.

In this timely new study, Catherine Davies provides a critical analysis of post-Franco Spain's most successful women novelists. Delving first into the development of feminism and women's writing and its critical reception in Spain since 1970, the author then focuses on two of the most popular and influential feminist novelists: Barcelona's Montserrat Roig (1946-1991) and Madrid's Rosa Montero (b. 1951). These writers' works share woman-centered themes such as family relationships, the search for self-fulfillment in a restrictive society, and the hope for the construction of a new world order. Catherine Davies provides a critical analysis of their complete oeuvre and a fascinating overview of contemporary women's writing in Spain.

The award-winning novels of Annie Ernaux are controversial, innovative, and address the topical issues of gender and social class. Surprisingly, there has been no major study of her work, despite the fact that it is increasingly taught and has been widely translated. This book fills that gap by presenting Ernaux's work through a range of readings: those of the author herself, those of academics, of reviewers and of 'ordinary' readers. Ernaux's own curiosity about the relationship between writing and the reality she is describing leads her to adopt a self-reflective approach to the narration of her life experience. This stimulating introduction to her work reflects both on the relationship between writing and identity in general terms, and specifically on the process of writing literary criticism. In the final chapter the impersonal register of academic writing is extended by a more personal dialogue with Ernaux's texts. What emerges is a new critical method that explores the multiple relationships between readers and texts. The first work in English on Annie Ernaux, this book goes far beyond traditional analyses to address the fundamental question of critical writing and to present a new methodology for the study of literary texts. It is thus essential reading for those interested in French literature, critical theory, gender and cultural studies.
