Metal Forming and the Finite-Element Method

The application of computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques is becoming essential in modern metal-forming technology. Thus process modelling for the determination of deformation mechanics has been a major concern in research. In light of these developments, the finite element method - a technique by which an object is decomposed into pieces and treated as isolated, interacting sections - has steadily assumed increased importance. This volume addresses advances in modern metal-forming technology, computer-aided design and engineering, and the finite element method.

This book identifies the major problem areas of metal cutting during the production of mechanical components. Thoroughly updated with new questions and exercises at the end of each chapter, the book relates observed performance 0n metal cutting to fundamental physics, materials behavior, and chemistry. In addition, heat transfer, tribology, and solid mechanics are covered in appropriate detail.

Assembley is the process by which parts become products that do useful things. Yet the design of assemblies and the process of assembling them are not taught in universities. This book is the first to develop a systematic approach to modeling and design of assemblies. It addresses assembley on two levels. Assembley in the Small deals with the fundamental processes of assembling two parts using engineering fundamentals. Assembley in the Large develops a systematic theory for designing of assemblies as carriers of function, starting from methods for representing assemblies in a computer and including the basic properties of mechanical constraint. Important assembley analysis techniques such as predicting variation, Design for Assembley and generating assembley sequences are also covered.
Axiomatic Design and Fabrication of Composite Structures
Applications in Robots, Machine Tools, and Automobiles

This book presents an integrated approach to the design and manufacturing of products made of advanced composites. It is designed to teach students and practicing engineers how to streamline and improve the design process for parts and machines made out of composite materials by focusing on the behavior of composites and their constitutive relationships during the design stage. The primary market for this text will be industry-sponsored courses and practicing engineers, with some potential for use in university graduate courses in the US and abroad. The book will include a CD of the authors' own analytical software, Axiomatic CLPT (Clasdsical Laminate Plate Theory) for students and self-learners. It is part of the Oxford Series on Advanced Manufacturing (OSAM).

Formation of products by paste flow and extrusion occurs in a multitude of industries including the manufacture of a broad range of ceramics, foods and pharmaceuticals. This unique text is the first to demonstrate, to suppliers and users of paste flow equipment, a scientific means of approaching design and operation. It will be indispensable in developing new products and processes in addition to enhancing existing ones. All types of equipment are considered and particular emphasis is given to paste characterization and die design. Based on 25 years' indusrial experience and research work, the text blends theory and practice, with emphasis on the practical applications, for anyone with a background in engineering or science.

Principles of Abrasive Processing

Grinding is one of the most important operations employed in Production Engineering to remove unwanted material and to introduce desired geometry and surface properties. Once considered only a secondary finishing operation, grinding is now more widely employed as suggested by the term, "abrasive machining". The approach to grinding taken here is to consider the basic processes in fundamental terms rather than to attempt to present a large mass of empirical results. Thus, the emphasis is placed on why things occur as they do rather than on specific solutions to problems ordinarily met. The rationale for this approach is that it better enables an engineer in the workshop to find solutions to new and unusual problems.
