This open access book introduces crealectics, a new creative methodology that bridges philosophical depth with practical innovation. Drawing on Leibniz's concept of compossibility – the idea that not everything possible can coexist in the same world –the author develops a five-phase approach to holistic innovation: resetting, crealing, profusing, compossibilizing, and realizing.Tested through real-world applications including case studies with Vattenfall R&D, the crealectic method offers an alternative to purely analytical or dialectical approaches to innovation, what the author calls “inner-novation." The book presents the C.I.P.H.E.R. model (Crealectic Intelligence and Philosophical Health for Eudynamic Realities), demonstrating how individual transformation and collective innovation can work together to create "the best of compossible worlds."This interdisciplinary work contributes to possibility studies, sustainability thinking, and innovation methodology, offering practical tools for academics, practitioners, and students seeking approaches to creative problem-solving that honor both diversity and coherence.

This book distils thirty years of creative practice into a rigorous inquiry that bridges artmaking, somatic intelligence, and systems thinking. Rooted in the author’s concept of Embodied Matter Exploration (EME), it positions creativity as cultural metabolism, where material, memory, and body co-compose meaning. Each chapter unfolds around an artwork as theory, method, and intervention. Resisting fragmentation, the book integrates autoethnography, semiotics, and living systems thinking.Academic literature is treated as a dialogical companion. By participating in meaning making and interpretation, readers gain new perceptions of self, nature, and society, and develop critical reflections to challenge pressing issues such as social injustice, environmental sustainability, and technology’s shaping impacts. A thought-provoking read for those interested in systems theory, anthropology, health psychology, neuroscience, and ecology, this practice-led and autoethnographic work opens new paths to possibility studies and creative research.

This book explores the link between higher education and possibility by examining the role of educational environments in cultivating knowledge, skills, as well as imaginative and transformative capacities essential for addressing complex social challenges. It discusses how encouraging possibility thinking can trigger new cognitive processes and empower students to imagine, question, and innovate through criticality and cooperation, hence contributing meaningfully to the transformation of society and solving its global problems.A short yet concise reflection on the importance for students to imagine alternatives, think critically, create, and collaborate, this volume prompts to cultivate educational environments that contribute to societal progress toward human and ecological well-being. Boasting a combination of theory and practice, as well as practical pedagogical insights, this is a timely and inspiring read for academics interested in possibility studies, critical, creative and cooperative thinking, education, and related fields.

This open access book offers the first comprehensive synthesis of the Three Horizon approach—a participatory approach first introduced by Anthony Hodgson and colleagues, for understanding how change happens in complex systems, envisioning possible and desired futures, and navigating the paths between. The framework provides a versatile scaffolding for navigating complex transitions that translates readily across disciplines, sectors, and worldviews, enabling collaboration across difference—what scholars call a “boundary object”. It reveals how current systems (Horizon 1) lose fit over time, how alternative possibilities (Horizon 3) emerge from the margins, and how the turbulent space between (Horizon 2) becomes the site of transformative change. This edited collection offers a comprehensive synthesis of Three Horizons theory and practice, weaving together contributions from the framework's co-originators with global case studies, practical tips, and tools. It moves from conceptual foundations through applied practice to deeper questions of perception, hope, and transformative capacity—exploring collective sense-making, strategic reflection, and systemic learning. In a world navigating polycrisis—from climate change and technological disruption to social transformation—Three Horizons approach offers a rare integration of systemic thinking and creative imagination. This book makes that integration accessible and actionable, an essential resource for academics and practitioners in possibility studies, future and anticipation studies, education, sustainability and environmental sciences, and social change.

This book explores how people imagine, create, and sustain societal futures through the interplay of imagination, change, and preservation. Drawing on possibility studies and creativity research, it uses the concept of creative preservation as a unifying framework for understanding how communities creatively renew and take care of what already exists rather than only pursuing radical novelty.Emerging from discussions held at the 4th International Conference of Possibility Studies, the volume begins at the level of global social and ecological systems, examining the extent to which social innovation can function as a force of preservation and regeneration. It then turns to intergenerational creative continuity and ageing to reveal novelty in what societies neglect in old age, before reflecting on methodological considerations from new materialism for addressing work on societal futures. The book then critically discusses the past and present disruptions in academia and proposes perspectives to care for and preserve the possibility for research to contribute meaningfully to societal change. It concludes by exploring the transformative potential of wonder and astonishment in education as a practice of caring and an attitude of exploring individual and collective possibilities.A thought-provoking response to the growing concerns around how social scientists can provide frameworks to adjust to and contribute to a more caring and sustainable society, this book is for researchers and students in sociology and social theory, education and pedagogy, philosophy and critical theory, cultural and performance studies, creativity studies, sustainability studies, STS, and futures and possibility studies.
