This book provides unique insight into Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) in Africa. With a particular focus on Ethiopia, it examines the impact of FDI on Africa’s industrial and manufacturing sector and the potential for productive FDI to advance industrialisation and create jobs for a large and young labour market. The creation of government policies and an institutional framework for the management of FDI is also examined, alongside lessons that can be learnt from policies that were less successful. This book offers a comparative perspective on FDI to highlight the forms of government intervention that maximise the economic benefits of FDI. It will be relevant to students, researchers, and policymakers interested in development economics and the political economy.

This book explores the dynamics and challenges of building an industrial workforce and industrialisation in Africa. It highlights the potential for economic growth within the manufacturing sector and how industrialisation can provide employment, build industrial workforce and facilitate labour market opportunities. Government policies and the role of local and regional governments are analysed to examine why certain industrial parks perform better than others. With particular details drawn from Ethiopia’s apparel and textile industry, the historical relationship between capitalist development and the labour force is explored to show tensions between maximising profits and ensuring labour rights and better wages. Building an industrial workforce necessitates effective government policies, firm strategies, industrial ecosystems, and productive dialogue and collective learning between government and firms.

The links between industrial policy and urban transformation are also discussed to underline how cities can drive economic growth and foster technological innovation within the developing world. This book offers a framework for industrial policy and economic development that can be applied within emerging and developing economies, particularly in Africa. This book explores the vital role industrial hubs play in the economic catch-up of developing and emerging economies. It examines the characteristics of newly industrialised economies and the potential for industrial hubs to enable economic transformation, industrial agglomeration, and technological development. The uneven nature of industrialisation and economic growth is highlighted by case studies worldwide, including China, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam from Asia; and Ethiopia, Mauritius, and Morocco from Africa. An industrial policy framework for productive transformation and governance is outlined to present how the impact of industrial hubs can be maximised in accelerating late industrialisation and economic catch-up.This book offers unique insight into the opportunities and challenges presented by industrial hub development within emerging and developing economies. It will be of interest to students, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working on industrial policy and development economics.

This book explores the developmental prospects, risks, and implications of foreign direct investment (FDI) in sub-Saharan African (SSA). Despite the region’s significant potential, it continues to face complex challenges and significant capital shortages. In theory, FDI could promote development by supplementing domestic savings, enhancing financial systems, and promoting global integration, but it can also weaken the balance of payments and undermine domestic investment. In addition, SSA’s weak institutions and poor governance means that FDI may also contribute to dysfunctional capitalism and tax evasion. This book argues that colonial legacies and flawed policy choices have entrenched institutional weaknesses and socio-economic outcomes that deter diversified FDI and attract extractive FDI, leading to underdevelopment and resource dependency while undermining industrialization and diversification. This book will be relevant to students, researchers, and policymakers interested in development economics and the political economy of SSA.

Public debt has become a defining issue shaping Africa’s development trajectory. In recent years, rising borrowing levels, changing creditor structures, global financial tightening, climate financing pressures, and commodity price volatility have reshaped the continent’s fiscal landscape. Yet borrowing remains essential for infrastructure, social investment, and structural transformation. The key question is not whether Africa should borrow, but how it can do so sustainably while strengthening economic resilience. This book provides a rigorous, policy-oriented analysis of debt dynamics across Africa. It examines the drivers of debt accumulation, debt sustainability frameworks, restructuring mechanisms, and concessional financing. It also explores emerging innovations such as Islamic sovereign bonds, ESG integration in debt management, and climate finance instruments.By offering comparative insights into the interaction between debt, exchange rates, institutional quality, private investment, and macroeconomic stability, the book presents practical strategies for responsible borrowing and long-term fiscal resilience.
