In 2021, GW Pharmaceuticals plc was sold for $7.2 billion (£5.2 billion), but Dr Geoffrey Guy started it with just a licence from the UK Home Office and his personal cheque book. A Worthwhile Medicine tells the story of how and why he persuaded reluctant health regulators, sceptical investors and a conservative medical establishment that cannabis really could form the basis for a modern pharmaceutical - which he defines as 'a worthwhile medicine that can make money'.He had built up one publicly quoted pharmaceutical company only to have to step down from the top job after a failed attempt to float on the UK stock market. Undeterred, he started another venture after hearing heartrending tales of how multiple sclerosis sufferers were being denied symptom-relief because cannabis was a prohibited drug. He believed the answer was not to change the law and decriminalise recreational drugs but to create a licensed medicine from cannabis that doctors could prescribe safely for their patients.Looking to the future, Dr Guy has established a foundation to explore the exciting new area of quantum biology - the science of sub-atomic particles - which is completely changing our understanding of the ways in which all life functions.

Sir Horace Jones (1819-1887) was the architect of Tower Bridge, designed in collaboration with John Wolfe Barry. But while some of his surviving buildings are world famous, Jones himself is relatively unknown. For over twenty years he was architect and surveyor to the City of London, during which time he designed and built Billingsgate, Leadenhall and Smithfield Markets, and from 1864 until his death completed many important buildings for the City of London. From 1882 to 1884 he was also president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. This is the first published biography of Jones and is fully illustrated with examples of his designs and finished works, including Smithfield Market, shortly to reopen as the new home for the Museum of London on the edge of the City.

'In its best passages reads like a briskly paced thriller' - Fiona Harvey, The Guardian'There is nobody better on climate change and international negotiations' - Rt. Hon. Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero'I have nothing but the deepest admiration for his incredible contribution over the years and his continued commitment to climate action in the face of great personal challenge' - Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC 2010-2016Drawing on over three decades of experience as the UK and EU's lead climate negotiator, Peter Betts paints a warts-and-all picture of how world leaders and diplomats tackle the COP negotiations, providing a ringside seat at pivotal moments, such as the run-up to Copenhagen (COP15), the Cartagena Dialogue, the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement (COP21) and Glasgow (COP26). The Climate Diplomat is a unique insider account of the discussions that have shaped and continue to shape the future of our planet, but it also describes how the major powers such as the US, the EU and China negotiate with one another. Reflecting on his life's work in the final months of his life, Betts provides a revealing portrait of international politics at the highest level with key insights into the motivations of all the major players. He also gives a detailed history of COP, explaining how this controversial and often embattled forum has been crucial in altering the future of our planet's ecosystem.

The Exodus Story examines how the second book of the Hebrew Bible has prompted and inspired human action, whether in the domestic setting of the Passover meal or in the wider political or artistic themes of exile and the search for freedom.Fifteen essays explore aspects of the Exodus myth from medieval ritual and custom to more modern perspectives, such as the story's influence on Russan Jewish migration and the civil rights movement. Each essay is handsomely illustrated: early chapters with Egyptian papyri and pages from bibles and haggadahs; later chapters with works by artists from Michelangelo to Marc Chagall and Anselm Kiefer, and images from films such as DeMille's Ten Commandments and Preminger's Exodus.

If ever a story expressed the spirit of 'Keep Calm and Carry On' it's this one - The Bishop of Winchester, the Rt Rev Philip Mounstephen, College VisitorWith German forces poised to invade Guernsey in 1940, the pupils of Elizabeth College and other island children were hurriedly sent into exile. Under the calm and determined leadership of their Principal, Henry Milnes, the College's pupils and staff found refuge in Derbyshire, where uniquely and against the odds they succeeded in retaining their independent identity as a school and rebuilt their community in a world far removed from the island they loved. For five long years, with virtually no contact from home, they studied, played, and grew up in wartime England-sustained by shared purpose, tradition and hope.Drawing on letters, diaries, and school records, Exile: The Evacuation of Elizabeth College tells the remarkable true story of how an island school survived separation and war, and how its pupils and teachers carried the spirit of Guernsey and Elizabeth College with them until they could finally return after the Channel Islands' Liberation in 1945.
